What is Research Information Management (RIM) in the university environment?Broadly defined, RIM is the integrated collection of the scholarly outputs of its researchers by an institution
Other confusing appellations:• CRIS (Current Research Information System)• RNS (Research Networking System)• RPS (Research Profiling System)
• RIMs are not independent researcher profile systems like Research Gate or Academia.edu
• RIM ≠ Research Data Management (RDM)
Primary US RIM use cases
Reuse & interoperability
Faculty activity reporting workflows
Integration with campus IR
Benchmarking & reporting
Public researcher expertise profiles
Research Information
Management (RIM) System
Data sources
Internal data sourcesData Warehouse: HR appointments, courses taught
Campus awards management system: grants & contractsOther campus systems: Patents, honors, media reports,
service & committees, grad student mentoringManual entry: uncaptured publications & artistic works
External data sourcesPublications: Scopus, WOS, PubMed, ArXiv, SSRN
Impact metrics: Scopus, WOS, Altmetrics

Campus partners
Use case 1: Public researcher expertise profiles
• Public portal of researchers, units, & research outputs
• Aggregates the research outputs of the campus in a public, searchable form
• Increases institutional & researcher visibility and facilitates expert discovery
experts.umn.edu
Use case 2: Faculty Activity Reporting (FAR)/Annual Reviews• Integrated workflow &
system of record for supporting faculty reviews
• Pre-populated from other campus systems (HR/directory, teaching, grants, patents)
• Campus may implement an enterprise system—or perhaps colleges have their own silo systems
provost.vt.edu/faculty_affairs/efars
Use case 3: Integration with campus institutional repository• Driven by campus OA policies
(US) and need for national OA compliance (UK+)
• Attempts to identify OA eligible works, notify & encourage research self archiving
– Metadata imported from publication indexes, supports tracking of © permissions, versions
– Researchers upload works into RIM appears in IR
scholarworks.duke.edu
Use case 4: Benchmarking & reporting
• Provides citation metrics, Altmetrics re: individual researchers
• In aggregate, institutions may:– Customize reports &
dashboards for department, college, institution
– Analyze research strengths– Identify the journals where
faculty are most commonly publishing
– Support strategic decisions
• US: driven by reputation, rank, & decision support
• Europe, Australia: – National assessment
exercises– Coordination for
institutional benchmarking
– Also driven by reputation, rank & decision support
Use case 5: Reuse & interoperability
“Enter once, reuse often”
Single system of record can be used to support/populate other outputs:• Faculty creation of
biosketches and CVs• Campus directory and faculty
web pages• Academic program reviews,
accreditation• .

*active conversations about reuse are underway
TakeawaysComplex institution-wide collaborations
with many stakeholders
Multiple use cases are likely to adopted on a single campus
Libraries have valuable expertise to offer to campus
