Eastside Community Connection is a University of Texas student-run nonprofit that offers food pantry services and adult education programs to lower-income residents of East Austin. Students run the day-to- day operations and govern the organization alongside community members on our Board of Directors. Our service learning model develops the next generation of civic-minded leaders while addressing serious issues affecting the community, such as poverty, hunger and language barriers.

feedEmergency Food Assistance Program: This program provides basic needs assistance through a weekly food pantry. The food pantry operates on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 4:00 to 6:00 PM every week. In 2010, our food pantry assisted over 1,500 families in East Austin

teach Adult Education and Advancement: You give a man a fish and feed them for a day but teach a man to fish and feed them for a lifetime. Adult education classes designed and taught by college students give our adult clients and opportunity to create a better life for them and their family. English-as-a-Second Language, computer literacy and financial skills make up the stable of our adult education classes.

serveEastside Community Connection Philanthropy and Leadership Institute: The most pivotal area of service related to our success is training college students through internships, group discussions, speakers and direct service in community. Students engage in intensive training and work part-time in the organization’s office learning about non-profit activities such as financing, client management and program development. Since 2004, over 1,000 students have contributed over 25,000 hours of service to the East Austin community.

Despite progress we are still dealing with immense challenges in our community. Eastside Community Connection combats those challenges by engaging college students to provide services to those in need.Students run the day-to-day operations and govern the organization alongside community members on our Board of Directors. These talented and dedicated individuals learn to develop and administer services to deal with the very real problems of poverty, education and hunger in our area: they distribute items from ECC’s food bank to needy families, conduct adult education classes on-site for residents seeking to create a better life for themselves, and provide a critical support network to families who have fallen on hard times. Student-created hunger-relief and teaching programs have benefited over 1,500 Austin families this year alone. And the need keeps growing but you an opportunity help.Eastside Community Connection is celebrating leadership with the 9th annual Emerging Leaders Dinner on [date]. The event is an opportunity for established leaders in government, business, and philanthropy to mix and mingle with the next generation of leaders in our community. Student Volunteerism Facts• 74% of undergrads

at UT participate in volunteer activities.

• Since 2004, college students have contributed 52,428 volunteer hours

to ECC

Your support will allow for ECC to meet the following programming and operational goals in 2012:

ANNUAL GOALS

• Enhance the Student Volunteer Program• Pair student interns with a professional mentor in the community• Create an educational component consisting of workshops and

lectures for student interns • Provide a financial aid to student interns who cannot afford to

volunteer without a job• Expand our Community Service Programs• Provide a larger and more nutritious supply of food to all

food pantry clients• Provide more offerings for clients in our English as a Second

Language and Computer Literacy Classes• Provide additional class offerings such as Civics or GED Prep• Increase Eastside Community Connection’s capacity to serve

the community with additional resources• Hire an additional full-time staff person to supervise interns and

manage programs• Relocate to a larger facility more central to East Austin to

accommodate organizational growth

The Emerging Leaders Dinner is a celebration of leadership where over 250 notable community leaders in business, government and philanthropy share an evening and a table with a group of promising young people. Leaders are encouraged to share their thoughts and experiences about service, community and leadership to inspire a generation.

The event features a prominent leader delivering a keynote address in which they will discuss their personal views and experiences regarding leadership and service. Past speakers have included former Editor of Texas Monthly, Evan Smith, noted political communication strategist Mark McKinnon and hall of fame women’s basketball coach Jody Conradt along with UT legends Colt McCoy and Quan Cosby. Marcus Luttrell, decorated war hero and author of #1 New York Times best- selling book, Lone Survivor, served as the keynote speaker last year.

This year’s keynote address will be delivered by notable political strategist and commentator, Matthew Dowd. During the past twenty-five years, Matthew Dowd has helped shape strategies and campaigns for CEOs, corporations, foundations, governments, candidates, and presidents. Matthew’s recent political work includes serving as the Chief Strategist on two winning reelection efforts – for Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2006 and for President George W. Bush in 2004. A contributor to many news outlets, Matthew teaches at the University of Texas’ LBJ School of Public Affairs and is also co- author of the New York Times bestseller Applebee’s America: How Successful Political, Business and Religious Leaders Connect with the New American Community.
