LESLIE GALLACHER

Originally from Vancouver Island, Leslie now resides in Calgary, AB. Although she misses taking walks by the ocean, the panoramic views of the Rocky Mountains provide her with inspiration. Leslie spent the past five years honing her artistic skills primarily in black and white, using graphite pencil on Bristol paper. A lot of her work has been commissioned dog portraits and she enjoys working with clients to capture the essence of their beloved family members. In the Fall of 2016 she took an acrylic painting class from Calgary’s Wildflower Arts Centre and quickly realized she enjoyed using colour in her artwork. Far from the precise pencil work of her drawings, Leslie enjoys a loose style when painting mountains, using thick, bold strokes with a palette knife. More of Leslie’s work can be viewed on her website at www.lesliegallacher.com

JODI FUHRER Born and raised in Alberta, Jodi has lived in Calgary for most of her life. As a child, she remembers trying to paint the Rocky Mountain sunsets with her children’s watercolour set. “The colours invigorate me. I call my ‘artist eyes’ being able to see the beauty and colour around me.” Jodi had an early interest in art, but the ever-present oil and gas industry influenced her to major in Environmental Sciences at the University of Calgary. She never put a brush to canvas until her twenties. It was then that she discovered she a had a natural talent and became fervent about painting. Initially, Jodi took lessons through North Mount Pleasant Arts Centre and Swinton’s Art Supply, but her free time was limited, as she was raising two young children. Over the past 18 months Jodi has utilized the studio at Kensington Art Supply & Instruction with Nancy-Lynne Hughes. Now focussing on mixed-media, Jodi has discovered abstract impression which has allowed her style to develop. Recently Jodi has shown at the Western Showcase for the Calgary Stampede, and participated in art shows at Kensington Art Supply & Instruction. Jodi has paintings in private collections across Canada as well as the United States. www.jodifuhrer.com

CINDY COLLINS

I bought my first DSLR in 2010. A year and a half later I registered in Foundations of Photography level 1 at Mount Royal University and completed my Certificate in Photography 2013. I have lived in a rural farming community for the majority of my life and believe these locations hold a great deal of history, beauty, and stories to be captured and remembered. With how drastically everything is changing and how busy our lives have become, I feel that photography in the prairies brings me back to a time where lives were simple and built on hard work and determination. Photography has challenged me to appreciate the simple things and that there is beauty and meaning in everything.

LAURA MCMANUS

Laura McManus is an emerging artist from Calgary and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Art from Alberta College of Art + Design in 2015. The process of McManus’ work is an exploration of material, and is intuitive and therapeutic. McManus begins her process with diluted acrylic paint and manipulates it by pouring layer after layer. Through swirling walnut oil, acrylic, and shaved charcoal, the mass takes on a life of its own. This process reflects the uncertainty one feels throughout their life. McManus’ practise, like her life, is full of uncertainty, instinct, and following a gut reaction. Even though the compositions are abstract, the use of neutral tones emphasizes the idea of self portrait. Her sporadic and intuitive composition is an expression of instability.

TARA JOHNSON

I am from Hinton Alberta, where I live with my husband of 12 years and my two children. I have lived in Alberta all my life, from the prairies to the Rockies. I started drawing at the encouragement of an artist friend when I was 17. I was terrible, but finding so much satisfaction in creating something with my own hands sparked a fire in me. Fast forward about 9 years and the urge to pick up a paintbrush struck. It was a slow journey— with little children to tend to, and no training or space to do my art—but I felt driven to try. Last year (after much experimenting and giving away paintings as gifts) I sold my first abstract painting locally! So if you were to ask me today how would I describe myself as an artist I would say this: Self taught, absolutely inexperienced, and hungry to learn. I have been drawn to art for so long I won't hold back anymore, and I will continually keep striving to get better. I hope to inspire other women, especially mothers who feel they are too busy or not talented enough to take the leap. To them I say: "Put your creative self out there and joy will follow.”

LARISSA HAUCK

Through the exploration of drawing and painting, Larissa is inspired by the relationship between femininity and nature as a site for ambiguity, catharsis, and identity. She creates hybrid creatures— combined with botanicals and other natural elements— that appear to be in a metamorphic state. They become a decaying organism stagnant in time, a reference to mortality. These subjects vary in imagery, ranging from hybrid flowers and insects to deviant animals or human-like beings. Watercolours add to the sense of otherworldliness and the colors obscure the image, forcing the viewers to experience each piece at a close proximity. Her automatist-like paintings evoke an uncanny sensation of imperfection, transformation, and intimacy.

PATRICIA MESZAROS

Pat was born and raised in Calgary, and continues to call it home today. Her love of the arts started when she was a little girl and given a paint-by-number set for Christmas by her uncle. Ever since then, Pat has been involved in the arts. She graduated from SAIT with her diploma in Architectural Technologies, and has taken numerous lessons and classes from industry professionals in a variety of different arts. These have included classes in folk-art painting, realistic landscape paintings, design and crafting sterling silver jewellery, and mixed media. She is known for her paintings of a wide variety of landscapes; from Fish Creek Park, to the vistas of Italy, to the Bayou in Louisiana. On each she infuses the scene with her own flare, accentuating colours and life all around. Pat’s chosen medium is acrylic favoring its versatility and the creative freedom it affords her.

ELISE MULLEN

C. Elise Mullen’s practice is capturing the arrangement of man-made objects and nature in the right light. She is inspired by the everyday urban scene that turns into a piece of art when you are in the right place at the right time. She looks for patterns like light reflecting off a wet road, or the negative space of the sky around light posts. Her fascination with light is due to her tumid lupus diagnosis, a photosensitive skin disorder. She can’t enjoy the sun’s rays but she loves the art it creates. Her artwork is based off her travel photography from near and far, the inspiration is everywhere! C. Elise Mullen received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Alberta College of Art and Design (ACAD). Her time at ACAD allowed her to explore different mediums like jewellery, ceramic, to finding her calling of printmaking and painting. The urban theme started in her first year of being at ACAD making art from past photographs she took while in New York City. Her personality and vision are seen in her paint strokes.

SOPHIA LENGLE

Sophia Lengle is a proud Edmontonian artist living in Calgary. She is currently enjoying life as a first year Fine Arts student at ACAD after winning the Enbridge Entrance Scholarship in the “2016 SHOW OFF!” Sophia’s relationship with the arts influences her approach to life and she tries to incorporate her creative way of thinking into every aspect; whether it was coming up with interesting ways of teaching fidgety 12 year old cadets in her time in the cadet program or how she approaches her creative process and constant doodling during commutes. Sophia’s artwork is created with diligent intention and a healthy amount of intuitive line work. Her concepts are inspired by her interactions with others and the curiosities of the every day. Sophia must also admit that she is thoroughly enjoying her time in Calgary.
