The mission of the Emergency Assistance Program is to provide temporary rental assistance, utilities, food, household products, etc. for individuals and families residing in the New River Valley who are experiencing a financial crisis who meet 200% or below federal poverty income guidelines.

▪ More New River Valley citizens have become eligible for our services due to reduced job hours or loss of employment.
▪ Many of the clients we serve need greater financial assistance.

▪ Individuals/Households may receive food monthly from one of our food pantries.
▪ $25 Food Lion (restricted) gift cards.
▪ Can not purchase tobacco or alcohol with gift cards and clients can receive two cards per month if need.
▪ Utilities
▪ Utilities include water and electricity. Utility assistance requires a termination notice or must be disconnected.
▪ Clothing Vouchers
▪ Clothing vouchers are provided to our clients to use at the local thrift store in their residential jurisdiction.
▪ Personal & Household Supplies
▪ Diapers, formula, hygiene items.
▪ Services are provided via the phone, online and contactless pick up.
▪ E.A. staff are able to assist eligible clients with rent deposits, application fees and arrears preventing move to improve housing.
▪ If appropriate, the client will be referred to our Homeless & Housing Program. Mortgage and rent assistance should make a difference in stability and keep the household from being evicted of foreclosed on.

▪ Amount Spent Thru 9/11/20: $167,373.93
▪ Amount Remaining: $ 35,169.07
▪ These funds have been spent on utility and housing assistance.
▪ The majority amount of the funds have been spent assisting clients with housing needs.
▪ We are currently spending the CSBG Covid-19 dollars instead of our private restricted funds.
*The Floyd Back Pack Program served an average of 185 students each weekend prior to the Covid-19 Pandemic.
The program has been postponed for the 2020-2021 school year.

▪ The Blacksburg Interfaith Food Pantry served 7,368 families and individuals, for an average of 614 served per month during the 2019-2020 program year.
▪ In addition to using NRCA funds as available, NRCA staff contacts other community organizations for funds to provide emergency assistance. Some community organizations include churches, Department of Social Services, and civic organizations.
