Product descriptionLearn about the Unity Family.

The Unity Family product line sets new standards for midrange storage with acompelling simplicity, a modern design, affordable prices, and flexible deployment - tomeet the needs of resource-constrained IT professionals in large or small companies.

Unity is targeted for mid-sized deployments, remote or branch offices, and cost-sensitive mixed workloads. Unity systems are designed for all-Flash, deliver the bestvalue in the market, and are available in purpose-built (all Flash or hybrid Flash),converged deployment options (through VCE), and a software-defined virtual edition. With simplified ordering, all-inclusive software, new differentiated features, internet-enabled management, and a modern design, Unity is where powerful meets simplicity.

The Unity Family consists of:

l Unity (purpose built): A modern midrange storage solution, engineered from theground-up to meet market demands for Flash, affordability, and incrediblesimplicity. The Unity platform is available in 4 All Flash models and 4 Hybridmodels.

Page 3: EMC Unity™ Family release notes

l VBlock (converged): Unity storage options are available in VxBlock System 350.

l UnityVSA (virtual): The Unity Virtual Storage Appliance (VSA) allows theadvanced unified storage and data management features of the Unity family to beeasily deployed on a VMware ESXi server, for a ‘software defined’ approach.UnityVSA is available in two editions:

n Community Edition is a free downloadable 4 TB solution recommended for non-production use.

n Professional Edition is a licensed subscription-based offering available atcapacity levels of 10 TB, 25 TB, and 50 TB. The subscription includes access toonline support resources, EMC Secure Remote Support (ESRS), and on-callsoftware- and systems-related support.

All three deployment options, i.e. Unity, UnityVSA, and Unity based VBlocks, enjoy onearchitecture, one interface with consistent features and rich data services.

Unity is Redefining Storage Simplicity and ValueUnity is the only storage system that successfully meets four important storagerequirements of today’s midmarket IT professionals (simple, modern, affordable, flexible). Here are some of the features and supporting statements that allows Unityto redefine midrange storage:

l Simple: Simplified ordering, all-inclusive software, rack-and-stack in less than 2minutes, customer installable, a new slick HTML5 user interface, proactive assist, and new CloudIQ internet-enabled management.

l Modern: Unity is designed to support the latest dense Flash drives such as 3D TLCNAND with a Linux-based architecture, new Intel Haswell multicore processors, upto 295K IOPS, 2U dense configurations, scalable 64bit file system & file systemshrink, unified snapshots & replication, Data-at-Rest-Encryption (D@RE), supportfor public and private cloud access, deep ecosystem integration with VMware(native VVols) and Microsoft, and much more.

l Affordable: Unity delivers the best midrange Flash economics with a great entryprice and overall TCO. Unity All Flash configurations start under $15K and Unityhybrid configurations start under $10K. UnityVSA allows anyone to get started forfree and upgrade into the supported virtual edition, a purpose-built hybrid or all-Flash system, or into converged infrastructure.

l Flexible: You can meet any storage deployment requirement with Unity fromvirtual to purpose-built to converged infrastructure. All deployment optionssupport the same data unified data services (SAN/NAS and VVols) to support anyworkload with traditional file (file consolidation, VDI user data, home directories)as well as transactional workloads for both file and block on both all Flash andhybrid configurations (Oracle, Exchange, SQL Server, SharePoint, SAP, VMwareand Microsoft Hyper-V).

New and enhanced featuresThe following features have been added or enhanced for this release.

Security Administrator RoleThe role of Security Administrator has been added to the existing roles available in thesystem. This role has full privileges for security operations but only operator privilegesfor storage operations. It provides security best practices of separating duties toensure that as few people as possible with administrator privileges have full access tothe system.

New and enhanced features 3

Page 4: EMC Unity™ Family release notes

Security Hardening/STIG compliance (physical deployments only)New processes have been added to harden a Unity system in order to comply with theDISA STIG standards. A new service command, svc_stig [qualifiers], wasadded to provide the ability to enable or disable STIG mode on a system. You can alsoascertain the status of the STIG mode on the array using this script. All three options, enable, disable, and status can be profiled based on the STIG categories I and II. Thestorage system will persist the STIG mode and preserve it through software upgrade.

In addition, a user with an administrator or security administrator role now has thecapability to enable, disable, view, and configure settings related to user accountsthrough a new UEMCLI command:

/user/account/settings set [-enabled { yes | no }] [-passwdMinSize <value>] [-passwdCount <value>] [-passwdPeriod <value>] [-maxFailedLogins <value>] [-failedLoginPeriod <value>] [-lockoutPeriod <value>] [-sessionIdleTimeout <value>] [-defaultAdminLockoutEnabled { yes | no }]

Also, a new output field was added to the /user/account show -detail UEMCLIcommand to support the ability to view the password expiration status for a useraccount.

Dynamic pool enhancementsThe pool properties page now displays the RAID type and width for a dynamic pool. Ifthere are multiple drive types in the pool, such as SAS Flash 3 and SAS Flash 4 drives, the RAID type and width for each drive type is displayed.

In addition, Unisphere provides clearer messaging in the following situations:

l When you expand a dynamic pool using drives less than the RAID width, Unispheredisplays an informational message indicating that the expansion process might betime consuming.

l When you create or expand a pool associated with larger capacity drives, if theentire drive capacity will not be usable Unisphere recommends the number andtypes of drives to add in order to utilize the entire capacity

Support for SNMP v2Unity's existing SNMP v3 trap notification support has been extended to also coverSNMP v2c. A Maximum of 10 SNMP trap destinations is supported.

Online data-in-place conversionsData-in-place (DIP) conversions allow for the orderly upgrade a system storageprocessors from lower-end modules to a higher-end models, while preserving existingdata and configurations. As of this release, this process can be performed while thesystem is online, keeping all data available during the upgrade.

For specific information about supported systems for Unity online data-in-placeupgrades, refer to the Unity Data in Place Conversion Guide, available on EMC.comand support.emc.com.

Fail-safe NetworkingThe Fail-Safe Network (FSN) feature provides network high-availability that extendslink failover into the network by providing switch-level redundancy. An FSN can be aport, a link aggregation, or any combination of the two. An FSN adds an extra layer ofavailability to link aggregations alone. Link aggregations provide availability in theevent of a port failure; FSNs provide availability in the event of a switch failure. If thenetwork switch for the active connection fails, the FSN fails over to a connectionusing a different switch, thus extending link failover out into the network.

Base LUN refresh from any snapshot versionAdded support for promoting test thin clones to production by refreshing the basestorage resource with a snapshot from the base resource's family. This provides theability to refresh production environments based on factors such as performancetuning, query optimization, and bug fixes.

Updated UnityVSA RequirementsUnity 4.2.1.9535982 is the last release where UnityVSA is supported to run on olderCPUs (those that do not support SSE4.2 or greater). If you have an existing UnityVSAdeployment with CPU that does not support SSE4.2 (or greater), you can upgradeUnityVSA in the following ways:

l Deploy a new UnityVSA on another server with a CPU that supports SSE4.2 (orgreater).

l Bring the your current UnityVSA server offline and migrate it to another newserver.

Unity File Storage Resource Adapter (SRA) supportUnity File SRA supports only VMware datastore types in Unisphere. For eachProtection Group or Recovery Plan, you must create a separate NAS server withassociated VMware datastores under it. Generic NFS datastores are not supported inUnisphere. Refer to the latest Unity File Storage Replication Adapter (SRA) ReleaseNotes for more information.

The storage system restarts unexpectedly with amonitor timeout or software watchdog timeout. This occurs when the system and user data sharethe same datastores (physical disks) and thesystem is overloaded with aggressive I/Oworkloads.

For example, a system can become overloadedwhen the workload includes heavy sequential writeblock I/O mixed with random file read and writeI/O.

It is recommended that userstorage be on a separate datastore than the system data storewhere UnityVSA is deployed. Ifthat is not possible, ensure thatthere are no more than fourvirtual disks on the system datastore. If user data is allocated onthe system data store, it can bemigrated to a different data store.See the vSphere documentationfor details. For UnityVSA

New and enhanced feature details

Link aggregation (physical deployments only)The storage system provides network high availability or redundancy by using linkaggregation. With link aggregation, there can be two to four Ethernet portcombinations in one logical link. Each storage processor (SP) must have the sametype and number of Ethernet ports. The loss of a network connection does not initiatefailover to the peer SP, avoiding an outage. The switch automatically moves traffic tothe remaining ports in the link aggregation if the path to one port fails. When theyconnection is restored, the switch adds the failed port back to the link aggregationgroup and resumes use of the port. You can aggregate ports that are on the same IOmodule, different IO modules, or you can aggregate IO module and onboard Ethernetports together (such as the onboard 10GbE BaseT port with the 10GbE Optical CNA

ports). Link aggregation also allows the system to load-balance host traffic, providingbetter performance.

Ports must have the same MTU size in order to be aggregated. Linked ports mustconnect to the same logical switch, and the switch must be configured to use the IEEE802.3ad standard Link Aggregation Control Protocol (LACP). Link Aggregation shouldalso be configured at the host level to provide resiliency against port or cable failures.Depending on the vendor, this may also be referred to as trunking, bonding, or NICteaming. Refer to your switch vendor's documentation for more information aboutusing LACP.

Note

Link aggregation can only be used for NAS server, file replication, and file importinterfaces; you cannot aggregate Ethernet ports that have iSCSI configured.

Link aggregation has the following advantages:

l High availability of network paths to and from the storage system — If onephysical port of an aggregated port fails, the system does not lose connectivity.

l Possible increased overall throughput — This is because multiple physical portsare bonded into one logical port.

l Load balancing across linked ports — Network traffic is distributed betweenmultiple physical ports.

Create a link aggregationAggregate two or more ports together for high availability.

Before you begin

Ports must have the same MTU size in order to be aggregated. Linked ports mustconnect to the same logical switch, and the switch must be configured to use the IEEE802.3ad standard Link Aggregation Control Protocol (LACP).

Note

Link aggregation can only be used for NAS server, file replication, and file importinterfaces; you cannot aggregate Ethernet ports that have iSCSI configured.

Procedure

1. Under Settings, select Access > High Availability

2. Under Link aggregations, select the Add icon.

3. Select the ethernet ports you want to add to the link aggregation.

Change a link aggregationAdd or remove ports from a link aggregation.

Before you begin

You cannot edit a link aggregation that is already part of a fail safe network (FSN).You must first remove that link aggregation from the FSN in order to do so. Youcannot remove the master/primary port from a link aggregation. You cannot add aport to the link aggregation that is already independently part of an FSN.

Ports must have the same MTU size in order to be aggregated. Linked ports mustconnect to the same logical switch, and the switch must be configured to use the IEEE802.3ad standard Link Aggregation Control Protocol (LACP).

Fail-safe networkingLearn about Fail-safe networking (FSN).

A Fail-Safe Network (FSN) is a high-availability feature that extends link failover intothe network by providing switch-level redundancy. An FSN appears as a single linkwith a single MAC address and potentially multiple IP addresses. An FSN can be aport, a link aggregation, or any combination of the two. An FSN adds an extra layer ofavailability to link aggregations alone. Link aggregations provide availability in theevent of a port failure. FSNs provide availability in the event of a switch failure. Eachport or link aggregation is considered as a single connection. Only one connection inan FSN is active at a time. All the connections making up the FSN share a singlehardware (MAC) address.

If the system detects a failure of the active connection, it will automatically switch tothe standby connection in the FSN. That new connection assumes the networkidentity of the failed connection, until the primary connection is available again. Youcan designate which connection is the primary port/connection. To ensureconnectivity in the event of a hardware failure, create FSN devices on multiple I/Omodules or onboard ports. The FSN components are connected to different switches. If the network switch for the active connection fails, the FSN fails over to aconnection using a different switch, thus extending link failover out into the network.

When replicating from one Unity system to another, configure the FSN the same wayon both systems as a best practice. You will need to manually configure the FSN onthe destination before setting up replication. Otherwise, if you set up the FSN on thedestination after replication is configured, you will need to use the Override addressoption to select the FSN as the interface for the destination NAS server.

Note

A NAS server IP interface should be build on the highest level logical device. If youwant to repurpose a port or link aggregation currently used as a NAS server IPinterface for an FSN, you will need to remove the IP interface from the NAS server, create the FSN, and reassign the IP interface to the FSN device.

Repurpose a NAS ethernet port for FSN or link aggregation

Before you begin

Note

If you only have one interface currently set up for your NAS server, the hostconnection will experience downtime during this repurpose process.

If you have already dedicated an ethernet port as an interface for a NAS server, butwould like to repurpose it for fail-safe networking (FSN) or link aggregation (LA), youwill need to deconstruct the network port, assign it to a LA or FSN, and then build theNAS server on top of the new FSN device.

Procedure

1. Remove the IP interface from the NAS server for the port you would like to usein the FSN.

2. Optionally, create the Link Aggregation to be included in the FSN.

3. Create an FSN using the desired ports and/or link aggregations.
