ETHEKWINI MARITIME CLUSTER

eThekwini Maritime Cluster(EMC) is a section 21 company that was launched in 2009. The EMC provides a platform for a collaborative engagement between different levels of government, state owned enterprises and the maritime community to implement programs of the common interest that support the growth and improve performance and competiveness of the maritime industry.

EMC VISION

The vision of the eThekwini Maritime Cluster is to create a platform on which stakeholders and role players can work together towards the common goal of improving the competiveness of the maritime industry thereby contributing to the economic growth of the city, province and the country.

EMC OBJECTIVES• To provide a platform for role players to network with each other and to engage

with government and Transnet to overcome infrastructural and institutional constraints.

• To improve education and training for the maritime industry and to enable talented people to enter the industry.

• To foster the growth of small and medium sized businesses in the industry as well as the transformation of the industry more generally.

• To improve maritime safety, health and environment management.• To foster the development of the ship repair and boat and ship building sectors

which offer good opportunities for employed creation.• To promote the eThekwini maritime industry locally, nationally and globally.

Advocacy Lobbying and Stakeholder Engagement:

The objective of this programme is to promote the eThekwini maritime industry locally, nationally and globally and create networking and advocacy platforms.Key Programmes:• Quarterly engagement with Associations• Media Training • Keeping industry abreast of global maritime developments• Advocacy and Lobbying

Research and Knowledge Management:

The objective of the programme is to provide a central repository of information related to the maritime industry. This programme will offer research capabilities and an online information platform.

Key Deliverables:

• Identify the maritime industry knowledge management requirements

• Provide an information base for the industry• Develop and distribute information on topical issues• Conduct industry research

Enterprise Development:

The objective of the programme is to facilitate the development and support of the targeted emerging enterprises. Key Programmes:• Identification and marketing of SMME• enterprise development programme for the maritime sector• Enterprise Development Summit

Industry Promotion:

The objective of the programme is to develop promotional and a marketing plan and materials for the eThekwini Maritime Cluster and the industry, this would include workshops, events, etc.Key programmes:• Benchmark and conduct a study of Port Cities• Events to position Durban as a Port City• Port Festival• AIVP• Durban Maritime Dinner• Transport Month event• Maritime Week event• Website• Media Training on Maritime

TRAINING & SKILLS DEVELOPMENTThe objective of the programme is to improve education and training for

the maritime industry and to enable talented people to enter the

industry.

• Learnership Programme

• Review of all the standards

• Sister City Agreements Operationalisation

Maritime Health, Environment and Safety:

The objective of this programme is to assist the industry to improve physical and economic safety and to lower its environmental impact.Key Programmes:• Dangerous Goods Seminar• Breakfast meeting on security awareness (SAPS)• Annual Police Awards• Promote Safety, Health and Environment in the industry

The objective of this programme is to factor the development and growth of the boat and ship building and ship repair sectors which offer good opportunities for employment creation.Key Programmes:• Boat Show and Boat Park • Obtain access to finance• Gain improved access to necessary infrastructure such as mooring and launching
