This is normally the table of content page, but instead of the content page I would like to

take a moment of your time. We originally cover more pages than what is in this issue.

This is a mock issue and after the launch issue in Feb/March of 2009 you will no longer

be able to view the free magazine unless you sign up for the newsletter at

www.embracenews.com After you sign up for the newsletter you will receive an e-mail bi-

monthly with a link to the magazine. EMBRACE Magazine is free and you pay nothing to

subscribe. You will also be entered to win great prizes by subscribing to the magazine. We will

not sell or give away your e-mail to anyone. Please check out the items that are included in this

issue.

EMBRACE Magazine is where Christianity and Secular meet. The mission for this magazine is

to bring those that are separated together. You will find a little bit of something for everyone in

every issue of EMBRACE. We are not half Christian Magazine and not half Secular Magazine.

We are both equally. Our desire is to share the word of God and His goodness to the masses.

If you have any announcements such as birthdays, weddings, church announcements or your

child accomplishments feel free to send to us. Also send in your child’s grades in school. We

will include in the magazine. What a way to lift your child up if they see their name is in print.

You can send in photos, true stories, short stories from your children and any news that you

would like for us to include in the magazine, as long as it is Christian or Family Oriented.

EMBRACE is for you the reader and your family, therefore we will listen to all of your sugges-

tions.

EMBRACE is all about family.

See you in March!

EMBRACE your FAMILY

Today I would like to talk about embracing your family.

In times such as this family is very important. We all

need to take a look at how we treat our family members. Em-

brace your family, by telling them that you love them, share

with them how much you appreciate them. Send a family

member a card or give them a telephone call just to say I love

you and I’m thinking of you. There are too many families

who don’t speak or who just don’t even like one another. We

are living in the days of the McCoy’s and the Whitfield’s and

it is time to change that. We have to take out time to think

about the message that we are sending to each generation.

We are sending them a message of hate, a message of conten-

tion, a message of division. It is time to make a change for our

families and embrace them.

Each month Twana will write a short article that is to uplift

or encourage those that are looking for a word that will put a

smile upon their face or to even make them go hmm.

Evie’s story is about how life situations can get you down. Weighing in well over four hundred

pounds and struggling to get rid of the excess baggage has become harder for Evie to deal with

on a daily basis. Many diets and may attempts to loose the weight is becoming a struggle.

Evie does not have the finances that will help her to get on the right regiment which will save her life,

therefore leading her to continue to eat unhealthy. “What people don’t understand is that when you

are low income you can’t afford to purchase the food that’s good for you and that becomes a great

issue in the lives of many over weight people.” Evie says. Being home bound, lonely and afraid to

ask for assistance has open up a door of creativity in her heart and life. Evie is a published children’s

author, she’s working on her Bachelors in Child Education, writing her life story on all of the abuse

and disappointments that she’s endured over the years and she is also an aspiring illustrator. With all

of the heart ache that she is facing with the excess weight, Evie is working even harder on securing

her future. For information on Evie and her story or to order a book or if in need of illustrations you

WAYS FOR TODAY’S FAMILY TO LIVE WITH LESS

written by Twana Lawler

[email protected]

$hop Wisely

• Combine resources

• Purchase food in bulk

• Seek out roommates

• Utilize public transportation

• Save money for a rainy day

• Purchase family plan for cell

phones

In my home there are four families. I have custody of four of my grandchildren. Three of my

daughter’s live with me and each has one child. One reason for these living arrangements is that

my daughter’s moved in to assist me with my grandchildren after I relocated thousands of miles

away from my home town. We have learned how to make the best of our living situation and we

have grown closer during it all. We share all bills equally, we all purchase groceries, household

items and we combine our resources to purchase things that the children need. With today’s econo-

my families are going to have to get back to where they once where and that’s together, whether in

the same home or the dealing with life situations as a whole.

A SAVINGS TIP:

Eat meals at one an others home

at least twice a week to save on food

Think of creative things to do with the children that will keep their mind on positive

things. This is the time for families to come together as a whole.

Roz Stevenson: Black Hollywood’s Film Publicist by Monie Valentine

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Roz got the

acting bug and believed that was her ticket

into the entertainment industry. She got a Screen

Actor’s Guild card and attended acting work-

shops around LA. Acting taught her how little

she knew about what went on behind the scenes.

So she switched gears and went into production.

Destined to soar Roz’s first production job she

started working at Norman Lear’s Tandem Pro-

ductions as assistant to the executive producer

of “Good Times” until the show was cancelled.

After “Good Times” she went to MGM Studios

as a temp in the publicity department and the

rest is history. All her natural skills, talents and

abilities as an organizer of high school events

came to good use and she became an apprentice

publicist at MGM. The studio paid for a public

relations program at UCLA while she worked

under the senior publicist for the studio.

Soon the senior publicist had personal problems

and left the position leaving Roz handling her

job such as booking shows on “Good Morning

America”.

Confident she could do the job permanently Roz

wrote a memo about why she qualified for the

position and of course was granted the promo-

tion to senior publicist in a short two years.

In 1986 MGM was sold to Ted Turner

and she was one of the staff members released

from duty. Determined to survive in the indus-

try she was passionate about Roz called all her

contacts in business and got three interviews.

The first with Universal, the second ABC and

the third was with a private corporation. Using

all her faith and tenacity Roz believes “the hand

of God pushed her forward.” “My mom always

told me to do all you can and God will do the

rest.” Her faith paid off when the president of

marketing at MGM called to officially let her

know about the termination she told him she

already knew and had contacted several col-

leagues for job leads. She told him who she’d

contacted and that Universal was the position

she wanted most. He called a friend who was

the president of marketing at Universal and was

offered the job within five minutes. Roz worked

at Universal for twelve years at the beginning of

what we now know as Black Hollywood.

Hired at Universal back in 1987 Roz was in

charge of booking all broadcast television shows

such as Entertainment Tonight, Access Hol-

lywood, The Tonight Show, The Today Show,

Good Morning America and CBS Morning

News. One of the first films she remembers

working on was “The Secret of my Success”

with Michael J. Fox.

She writes, “Over the past 40 years I have been

in the business there have been different waves.

The 70’s there were blaxploitation films (Pam

Grier and Jim Brown were the most popular)….

Spike Lee began a new era in the mid-80’s.

Eddie Murphy’s films started with Beverly

Hills Cop, Coming to America and Harlem

Nights…In the 90’s Spike’s films, John Single-

ton, Bill Duke, Kasi Lemmons (were promi-

nent) also there were popular films like Whoopi

Goldberg’s Sister Act films, Waiting to Exhale

and What’s Love Got to do With it, The Best

Man and The Hurricane. Now in the 2000’s Ty-

ler Perry and a host of Black Directors F. Gary

Gray, Tim Story, Malcolm Lee and Thomas

Carter…

” To promote certain films she’d create TV specials with

the Sci-Fi Channel and Discovery if it was a science fic-

tion film. Or she would do movie specials with MTV,

BET or VH1 if it was a film that appealed to teens. Her

most common strategy in marketing to the black audience

is the HBCU (Historically Black College & University)

newspapers and radio stations. She’d send them pro-

mo items and write up Top 10 Trivia Questions to

ask viewers on the air. She’s used churches for screenings even elemen-

tary schools to promote films.

As the only African-American female among movie

executives she’d often be privy to derogatory comments

made about African-Americans. She writes, “…I would

nicely correct their rude or generalized statement and they

would be embarrassed….I couldn’t become angry or they

would get nervous and not want to deal with me. As time

went on, they would ask my opinion all the time on things

related to black folks. They felt it was safe to ask me stu-

pid questions.”

By the late 1990’s a female president took the

helm at Universal and oversaw the successful production

of films such as “The Best Man” and “The Hurricane”.

She told Roz that the studio needed someone to cover the

African-American market. Roz submitted a proposal but

the president said she was unable hire anyone at the time

as management wanted to cut personnel. The alternative

was for Roz to have her own business with Universal as

her main client. Thus in June 2000 Roz Stevenson Public

Relations was born. Her first film assignment was “Nutty

Professor 2: The Klumps.”

As part of the campaign she sent promo items of the film

to black comedy clubs across the country and arranged

a cover story on Jet Magazine due to her long standing

relationship with senior editor Sylvia Flanagan. “I’ve put

more black movie stars on Jet than anybody.” She recalls.

Although the majority of Roz’s career has been filled

with successes. She does admit to some disappointments

about working closely with the world’s most powerful

African-American stars in Hollywood. The biggest being

their failure to standup for the Black media. Black stars

are often surrounded with non-black handlers (ie agents,

personal publicists, managers). They often do not have the

option of choosing who their publicists will be and thus

have very little say in what media they’ll speak to whether

radio, television or print. Since Black media does not have

the circulation as mainstream media they are often over-

looked by celebrity publicists who wish to market black

stars to mainstream publications and television shows.

She has worked very closely with many black actors and

their publicists were rude to black media outlets. But

when she’d inform them of the behavior they failed to do

anything about it because their handlers (ie agents, publi-

cists and managers) are all connected and close knit and

once they’ve made it they don’t want to rock the boat.

Unfortunately, Roz has officially handed her business

over to Sonya Ede, a former senior publicist at Paramount

Pictures. Her last project is “The Express” about the first

black Heisman Trophy winner Ernie Davis. I spoke to

her upon her return from the Atlanta screening of the film

for members of the Association of Black Coaches. She is

at peace and glad her era has come to an end. Her plans

for retirement include writing her memoirs and promoting

her husband’s art of hairstyles. When asked about regrets

“No”, she says. ”Its amazing how the whole thing came

about..things that made me move to the next level. I never

saw it coming. My mama said do all you can and God will

do the rest. “

Cheap men’s clothing

Cheap men’s clothing or how to look like

a million dollars without actually spend-

ing that kind of money. Everyone wants

to be fashionable, even men, or at least women

would like to see their male companions to be

well dressed, stylish and hip. Fashion for men

has never been in the forefront of the fashion in-

dustry, however, it is making a bigger statement

now than ever before. Men are now becoming

more aware of the fashion industry, and what

is happening in the world of fashion. There are

now magazines that focus on fashion for males,

and stores now specifically cater to the needs of

men, besides suit stores. Like in women’s fash-

ion, there are trends that need to be avoided and

left to the designer catwalks. This article will

focus on the hottest and most realistic values

that can be obtained from that wonderful world

of fashion, how to achieve a successful office

look for that new ‘business casual’ look, and

what works for ‘play time’, without breaking the

bank.

Colors are a fairly universal concept for what is

hot and what is not. The hottest colors for fall

and winter are black, navy, gray, green, red,

orange, and purples. Rich deep colors with little

or no patterns seem to be the most popular right

now. As with women’s fashion this season, a

look that should be avoided is the unmatched

look. For example wearing a Hawaiian shirt

with pin striped pants, a look that purposely

does not match. Personally, I think that this look

needs to be left on the runway because if you do

mix and match pieces, you may end up looking

like you dressed in the dark. Simplicity is very

big this season. The less ‘put together’ you look

the better.

teenagers have their own way of doing things, and his ir-

reverent methods of discipline sometimes cause more prob-

CHRISTMAS CRAFT FOR THE KIDZ

“MARDI GRAS BEADS AS CHRISTMAS ORNAMENTS”You can use it this Christmas or next, whenever you choose it will be beads of fun for the entire family.

This craft project combines Mardi gras with Christmas, so you can have the best of both worlds. Go to

your local craft store and get your material. This project is something you can do as a family, as well as

working with just you and your child. You can make as many as you like.

Material:

1. Craft piping for kids (the kind that’s easy to bend) or strong string or colorful Christmas colored yarn.

You can choose either one or both depending on how you want your Mardi gras beads to hang, loose

like a necklace or perfectly round.

2. Red and green beads with the hole in the center. Get medium or large, again which ever you want to

use.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Cut the piping or string to the size of a bracelet and start sticking the string or piping through the beads,

red first and green next, follow this pattern until you fill the string leaving both ends, then tie them to-

gether. Make sure you hold the other end so the beads don’t fall off. With the piping bend it into a per-

fect circle, fill it and then twist the ends together. Make as many as you wish to fill the tree. With this

craft you bring, two fun occasions in one that the whole family can share!

Canton Jones Bio

There is blessed. And there is truly blessed. Sometimes

the difference between the two is as subtle as Gods fa-

vor. More often than not, its what separates those simply

anointed with the Holy Spirit from those truly called to

change the world. Enter Canton Jones.

Defining a new genre of music, Arrow recording artist

Canton “CJ” Jones is by far, one of the most versatile

vocalists of our time. Self-styled with remnants of urban,

contemporary, traditional gospel and “old school” flavor,

Jones is fast becoming the rhythm & praise megaforce

for a new generation! A high-spirited, non-traditional

hip-hop artist with strong stage presence and genuine

compassion for young people, Cantons music is thought

provoking, his concerts are life changing and both de-

liver a surge of excitement with every performance!

Hailing from Deerfield Beach, Florida, CJ was intro-

duced to music very early. The product of a music-in-

spired family, by age 5 he was already singing with a

local quartet founded by his father. At age 16, he was

producing his own tracks and those of other local artists.

By the time Canton graduated high school, it was clear

that his steps were being ordered. He relocated to Atlanta

to attend Morehouse College and began singing with the

schools world-renown glee club. This experience became

the launching pad for a promising career and a wide

range of opportunities.

As a member of the Morehouse Glee Club, “CJ” was

a featured performer in the opening ceremonies of the

1996 Olympic games. He also sang in the first Gospel

concert held at the U.S. Pentagon, toured Russia, Po-

land, Africa and Denmark and performed for the likes of

Oprah Winfrey, Stevie Wonder, Billy Taylor, Dr. Bobby

Jones, Fred Hammond, Kurt Carr, Mary Mary, and the

late Ray Charles. Motivated by these opportunities, Can-

ton accepted Gods plan for his life, and with the support

of family and friends he recorded his first album.

Following the grassroots success of 20 Yrs. 3 Mths. &

12 Days an independent release that chronicles his path

to salvation Jones was signed to Arrow Records. This

set the stage for his critically acclaimed national debut,

The Password; paved the way for two Grammy nomina-

tions in 2005, and literally fast-forwarded a movement

of Christian rap artists with the passion, drive and lyrical

skills to change the hip-hop game forever.

And Jones stands quietly poised at the forefront. His

talent is undeniable: his anointing unmistakable. In fact,

CJs unwavering humility to God is perhaps the only

thing that might take you by surprise. Beyond that, there

is little difference between him and the industrys most

popular rap artists. He rocks Sean John, Rocawear and

Air Force Ones, pushes a black drop-top Benz on 24s,

and can get a party crunk without breaking a sweat. But

he does. And he has thousands of fans across the country

to prove it.

With his newest offering, love jones, “CJ” keeps it

crunk with bouncy chords, tightly wrapped party tracks,

and heavy bass beats that lay testament to his southern

Florida roots. Best known for situational lyrics relating

to everyday life, one might not have guessed the album

was named after his baby daughter, born to CJ and wife

Ramona nearly a year ago.

FAMILY FUN IS BACK

Family Games are a great way to spend

quality time together – provided everyone

benefits. Family games are a great way to

make time together enjoyable. There are

fabulous games that adults and children can

play together - games that are affordable,

fun, educational, and all players can par-

ticipate no matter whose turn it is. A Boca

Raton, Florida resident has created a trio of

family games that focus on environment,

wildlife, and literacy – and donates $1 of

every purchase to those causes.

IPSO FACTO – GOING GREEN is all

about conserving energy and has lots of tips

on how to leave a smaller carbon footprint

and save $$ at the same time.

IPSO FACTO – ANIMALS is packed with

amazing wildlife facts that will fascinate

both kids and grown-ups.

IPSO FACTO – WORDS is full of amusing

and intriguing words that are guaranteed to

spark lively conversations.

The games are marvels of simplicity and

versatility. There are no tiny pieces to worry

about losing, no board to set up, and can be

played with up to 10 players. The games are

fun for 10 year olds as well as their grand-

parents. A big plus is that the game takes

up so little room that it can be played just

about anywhere.

Here’s how the games are played: each of

the 220+ cards has a question and 4 pos-

sible answers (with the correct one marked)

and the goal is to collect as many cards as

possible by choosing the right answer.

How long does the game take? As long as

you want it to! You may decide that it’s

over when one player has won 10 cards, or

that the winner is the player who has the

most cards after 30 minutes.

Variations: If children are playing with

adults, you can make it easier for them by

only offering them 1 correct and 1 incorrect

answer. You can play one game at a time or

A LOOK BACK IN TIME

MAHALIA JACKSON

October 26, 1911 -

January 27, 1972

In 1950 Mahalia be-

came the first gospel

singer to perform at

New York’s Carnegie

Hall. She started tour-

ing Europe in 1952

and was hailed by

critics as the “world’s

greatest gospel sing-

er”. In Paris she was

called the Angel of

Peace, and throughout

the continent she sang

to capacity audiences.

Jackson’s career in

the late 1950s and

early 1960s continued

to rise. She began a

radio series on CBS

and signed to Colum-

bia Records in 1954.

Down Beat music

magazine stated on

November 17, 1954:

“It is generally agreed

that the greatest

spiritual singer now

alive is Mahalia Jack-

son.”[9] Her debut

Why do bad things happen

to good cucumbers? The

Ballad of Little Joe takes an

Old Testament look at the

question of suffering and

injustice via this cowboy-

inflected VeggieTales take

on the story of Joseph, the

youngest son of Jacob sold

into slavery by his jealous

brothers.

The story begins at the

Lazy Eye Ranch, the

Veggie equivalent of the

Ponderosa. Leading the

colorful pack is Larry the

Cucumber as Little Joe and

eleven French peas as his

jealous brothers. It’s a jour-

ney that will take Joe from

an abandoned mine shaft,

to a pizza saloon in Dodge-

ball City, with his faith be-

ing tested every step of the

way (as well as his uncanny

organizational skills). This

video will also feature an

all new and ever popular

Silly Song with Larry. “The

Question of the day: Do you make your child sit at the dinner table until they clean their plate?

Answers from our readers:

No i am not going to force him to eat.

I am currently pregnant with my fi rst but when my chil-

dren are older and understand portions I will but not when

I serve them up myself.

No but we do all sit until everyone is done eating

Never! A child knows when they are full!

We do sit as a family for dinner, but i will never force my

son to eat

No, i would never make my child fi nish everything on her

plate. If she’s full then she’s full, im not going to make her

eat more.

I will not force my child to sit at the table and eat every-

thing on her plate. If she is full; she is full. They know

how they feel more than we do!

Yes, my kids are only given enough food that i know they

will eat, and they eat it...we do not, can not afford to,

waste...

Page 32: EMBRACE Magazine

I do not force my child to eat all her food, she eats until she is full. I was literally force

fed as a child, and my step mom gave everyone in the house the same portions of

food. I would eat til I was full and sometimes be stuck at the table for hours, or she

would just force feed me often ending up with me throwing up.

No. they have to eat a good amount of food, but im not going to force my kids to eat if

they arent hungry. if they dont eat enough then i will say u can go after u take 3 more

bites, or something like that

No my son is 2 1/2 years I do make him eat at the table with the family and when

we are done depending on how much he has left I do say “how about two more bites”

and usually he takes a few more bits but I don’t make him eat everything. Something

I like he doesn’t I don’t force myself to eat everything on my plate why should I force

my son.. That’s how I see it.. good luck with the article

I don’t force her to clear her plate, But she does have to stay at the table till we are all

done. She also isn’t aloud to wander with food, if she wants to eat she is to eat at the

table.

NEXT ISSUE QUESTION: Do you think it is alright to spoil your child and do you feel

that it will effect their future?

mCHRISTIAN POP

MUSIC

At 28 years of age, Jaci Velasquez is one of the world’s

most successful and beloved Christian/Latin/pop sing-

ers. For proof, look no further than her 2 Latin Grammy

nominations, 3 English Grammy nominations, 5 Latin

Billboard Award nominations, her Latin Billboard Female

Pop Album of the Year award, 6 Dove Awards, El Premio

Lo Nuestro Award for New Artist of the Year, Soul to Soul

Honors and an American Music Award nomination.

Jaci has sold over 3.5 million albums, garnered 3 RIAA

certified Platinum recordings, 3 RIAA certified Gold

recordings, 16 #1 radio hits and has graced more than 50

magazine covers. Her resume includes ad campaigns for

Pepsi, Doritos, Target, Frizz-Ease and Helzberg Diamonds.

Velasquez, a Houston, Texas native, began traveling and

singing with her family when she was 9 years old.At the

age of 14, she signed to Myrrh Records. Her first album

“Heavenly Place” shot up the charts and garnered Jaci her

first Platinum record, earning her the title of “the fastest

selling solo debut artist in the history of Christian music.”

The Latin music industry quickly took notice and Sony Dis-

cos signed her to a Latin record deal.Jaci began recording

both English and Spanish albums simultaneously. Her Latin

recordings gathered some of the Latin music industry’s

most prominent record producers, including Rudy Perez,

Desmond Child, Emilio Estefan Jr. and Alejandro Jaen.

March 18th, 2008 marks the release of “Love Out Loud,”

Jaci’s 13th record and debut release on her self-owned

Apostrophe Records. Jaci teamed up with longtime friend

and producer of her first three records, Mark Heimermann,

to make what promises to be her best record to date. Velas-

quez’s growth as a songwriter is evident on “Love Out

Loud” as she co-wrote the majority of the songs.

The record opens with the upbeat anthem “Nothing But

Sky” where Jaci sings about her newfound happiness and

perspective on life. She says, “The writer of this song

wrote it specifically about my life. It reflects the

journey I have been on and where I am today.”

“It’s Not You, It’s Me” tells the story of the

strained relationship with her father after her par-

ents’ divorce. Velasquez says “You have to let go,

you have to forgive and you are the only one you

can control. I love my dad; I don’t want to miss a

moment without him in my life.”

“Love Out Loud” is the first radio single on the re-

cord. Jaci states, “I think the title says it all. Many

of us talk about changing the world. I hope this

song becomes a banner for everyone who has cho-

sen to show God’s love through serving others.”

On the moving worship song “Jesus (The Way),”

Jaci sings about the unconditional love of Jesus in

a prayer to him. She recalls, “A co-writer friend of

mine played me this song

You might be wondering…why should parents

teach their babies to read?

A baby’s brain thrives on stimulation and

develops at a phenomenal pace…nearly 90%

during the first five years of life! The best

and easiest time to learn a language is during

the infant and toddler years, when the brain is

creating thousands of synapses every second

– allowing a child to learn both the written

word and spoken word simultaneously, and

with much more ease.

Dr. Titzer says the current practice of start-

ing to teach reading skills in school is too late

and children benefit greatly from getting a

much earlier start since a child basically has

only one natural window for learning language

-- from about birth to about age four. During

this period it is easier for a child to learn any

type of language including spoken, receptive,

foreign and written language. The earlier the

child is taught to read the better they will read

and the more likely they will enjoy it.

Studies prove that the earlier a child learns

to read, the better they perform in school and

later in life. Early readers have more self-es-

teem and are more likely to stay in school.

Meanwhile, a national panel of reading spe-

cialists and educators determined that most of

the nation’s reading problems could be elimi-

nated if children began reading earlier.
