Management and Operations in the Networked SocietyThe Networked Society is a ubiquitous system of systems that will connect humans and machines in infinite ways. Ubiquitous connectivity opens up opportunities for value creation across the whole of society and enterprises in particular stand to benefit greatly from this transformative change. Industries such as automotive, health, utilities, transportation, home entertainment and agriculture are becoming increasingly connected, providing new cross-domain business opportunities. However, the networked society also poses new challenges, as vast amounts of data and information from many heterogeneous devices will need to be analyzed, combined and actioned in a safe way, creating a complexity that goes far beyond the capabilities of human management. This talk will cover several examples of such complex systems ranging from telecom networks to smart cities and the main techniques for management and operations of such systems. We discuss knowledge representation, semantic interoperability across different domains, and machine intelligence technology blocks relevant for management and operations of digitalized systems with requirements on performance, safety and sustainability.
PRESENTER: Elena Fersman, Research Leader, Machine Intelligence - Ericsson ResearchElena Fersman is a research leader in Machine Intelligence at Ericsson Research and an adjunct professor in Cyber-Physical Systems at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. She received a PhD in computer science at Uppsala University in 2003 and worked as a postdoc at École Normale Supérieure de Cachan in 2004 before starting her industrial career. While working at Ericsson, Elena had various positions including product management, portfolio management and research leadership. She has responsibility of setting research direction of multiple research groups based in several countries. Her current research interests are in the areas of modeling, analysis and management of software-intensive intelligent systems applied to 5G and IoT. Elena has co-authored 20+ scientific publications and 30+ patent families, participated in several PhD grading committees and served as reviewer at many international conferences.

Advanced electronics and own embedded SW – a survival issue for trucks and busesThe importance and amount of electronics and embedded software (SW) used in heavy vehicles is growing for every year. In order to meet customer needs of sustainable and reliable transports, very high requirements of reliability and robustness are necessary. In this very demanding truck environment, traditional component testing needs to be complemented with on-board software diagnostics and broad data collection from connected vehicles. In this way, real and potential failures can be detected very early on large fleets also then failure rates are relatively low. In addition, future needs of flexibility and functional safety is significantly easier to achieve using in-house developed embedded SW. Some examples of SW and electronics development at Scania will be given to illustrate this point.
PRESENTER: Niklas Karpe, Senior Manager, Ph.D. Head of Powertrain Control Platform, NEP - ScaniaNiklas Karpe was born 1962. He received a M.Sc. and a Ph.D. degree in Engineering Physics and Solid State Physics from the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Stockholm, in 1985 and 1990. After working with research and lecturing in Physics at KTH, and continuing on with R&D at Electrolux and Zarlink Semiconductor, he joined Scania in 2003. At Scania, he has been engaged in development of electrics and electronics (HW and SW) for heavy-vehicles on different positions. He is now heading a section developing controllers, sensors, actuators, cable harnesses and low-level SW for future powertrains. He is passionate about sensors, embedded systems for automotive and quality!

Windows 10 IoT – From Device to CloudInternet of Things, the most used phrase in my life these days. According to all major technology analyst firms, lots of money will be made by IoT solutions in the upcoming years. That sounds all great but how do you get started? What are the building blocks of an IoT solution? Why does your company need to build IoT solutions? In this presentation, Maarten Struys shows how Windows 10 IoT and Microsoft Azure are a great combo to build IoT solutions and how to securely send data from the device to the cloud. Keywords throughout the presentation will be security, scalability and maintainability.
PRESENTER: Maarten Struys, Account Technology Strategist - Microsoft OEM DivisionIn Maarten’s current role, he works with large OEMs in the embedded space in EMEA to build solutions based on Windows 10 IoT Operating Systems and on Azure IoT. Before moving to a technical sales role, Maarten was an experienced software developer. He has been working with many different Microsoft Windows Operating Systems for over 25 years, focusing on building embedded and mobile solutions for mainly the Industrial Automation and Healthcare markets. Maarten is a well-known speaker at international conferences like Tech•Ed, MEDC, Mobile Connections and Microsoft TechDays.
NOV 8, 13.20
Applying IoT and AI in the operations of the datacenterThe future seems to bring a huge demand for compute power with all new applications like autonomous vehicles, robots, IoT and new media. A network of compute infrastructure implemented in everything from central hyper-scale datacenters, edge datacenters to smaller compute equipment distributed close to users and devices is a viable way to meet the needs. To operate such a complex large-scale IT infrastructure system we need to look at it as an IoT system with all environmental sensors, IT and facility equipment connected and monitored. With a complete data collection and automation control system the next step is autonomous IT infrastructure operations, predictive maintenance, robot management, software controlled redundancy and machine learning optimization.
PRESENTER: Tor Björn Minde, CEO - RISE SICS NorthTor Björn Minde is head of research strategies at Ericsson Research with 30 years experience in mobile communication, cloud, multimedia & applications. He is also currently CEO of SICS North Swedish ICT an industry research institute newly established in Luleå focusing on datacenters. He holds an adjunct professorship at Lulea University of Technology in signal processing. His main research interests are sensor, context aware, datacenter and machine learning technologies. He has led the team behind Ericsson Labs with the objective to improve Ericsson ability in open innovation offering experimental API’s for mobile applications. Lately his main focus has been on cloud infrastructures for energy efficient operation. His twitter feed is http://www.twitter.com/torshammer.
