Box 60202 Nairobi 00200 Tel +254-20-2898000 Fax +254-20-2898531 EMBASSY OF JAPAN October –December 2015 (POLITICAL) The 82nd Emperor’s Birthday Reception On the 19th of Novem- ber 2015, the Embassy of Japan in Kenya held a reception at the Ambassador’s residence to celebrate the 82nd birthday of His Majesty the Emperor of Japan. The event was graced by the Ambassador of Japan to Kenya H.E. Mr. Tatsushi Terada, former Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki and Water and Irrigation Ministry Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa. During this event, four members of the Kenya Japan Alumni Association and a mem- ber of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, received commendation certificates for their efforts towards promoting the bilateral rela- tionship between Kenya and Japan. (CULTURAL AFFAIRS) The 9th Annual Japanese Cultural Festival On the 7th of November 2015, the Japan Information & Culture Centre held the 9 th Japanese Cultural Festival at its Embassy of Japan premises in Upper Hill. The 2015 festival was offi- cially opened by H.E. Mr. Tatsushi Tera- da, Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Kenya. The main guest was Ms. Yvonne Wamalwa, Deputy Director, Asia and Australasia Directorate, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, whose speech reiterated the importance of such festivals as a way towards making the world a global village. The three main events of the day included a Japanese Cooking Show, Kimono Demonstration and a Karate Demonstration all demon- strated by Japanese experts. Other activities were Japanese Dolls Exhibition, traditional Japanese games experience and paper folding ‘origami’.

(ECONOMIC COOPERATION) Japan Celebrates Grassroots Human Securi-

ty Project (GGP)

Between October and December 2015, 2 GGP projects started their construc-

tion and 1 GGP project was handed over.

List of GGP Projects Ground Breaking The Project for the Improvement of Educational Environment for Primary Schools within the Tea

Farm Areas of Nandi County. Grant amount of US$ 119,811. (Date: 27th October 2015) The Project for the Rehabilitation of Kalimani Earth Dam, Matinyani District, Kitui County. Grant

amount of US$ 101,159. (Date: 10th November 2015)

Handing Over

The Project for the Expansion of Gesurura Primary School, Gesurura, Marani District, Kisii Coun-

ty. Grant amount of US$ 93,363. (Date: 16th November 2015)

On the 9th of November 2015, through the Project for Improvement of

Water Sanitation and Health (WASH) and sta-ble supply of agricultural crops through the drill-ing of deep boreholes, Japanese NGO “ADRA Japan” constructed deep boreholes and eco-friendly toilets for the people of Kivou location, Mwingi Sub-County, Mwingi Central District, Kitui County. This Project is Funded under the Grant Assistance for Japanese NGO Projects through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan.

On the 2nd & 3rd of October 2015, the Japan Information and Culture Centre held a J-

POP Festival. The program of the event included the screen-ing of 5 Japanese anime films, Cosplay (costume play) com-petition and J-POP Nodojiman (singing) competition. The event was officially opened by H.E. Mr. Tatsushi Terada, Am-bassador of Japan to Kenya and Mr. Nicolas ole Moipei, 2015 JAMFEST Director. In the Cosplay competition, 9 par-ticipants dressed and acted as their favourite anime charac-ters from Japanese anime/cartoon while 21 participants sang their favourite J-POP in the Nodojiman competition.

On the 20th & 21st of November 2015, staff from the Japan Information and Culture Centre

visited Meru University, Kenya Methodist University and Chuka University to introduce Japan and the Japanese Government Scholarship Program. The students learnt Ja-pan and Japan-Kenya relations through watching DVD 'Japan Encyclopaedia' and participating in the 'Japan Quiz' which had various questions about Japan and Japan-Kenya relations. Lecturers who studied in Japan under the Japa-nese Government Scholarship Program also participated in

the event and shared their experiences in Japan.

On the 16th & 17th of October 2015,

staff from the Japan Information and Culture Centre visited the Masai Mara University, Ngoitoi Secondary School and Narok High School under the School Caravan Program for purposes of introducing Japanese culture and the Japa-nese Government Scholarship Program. The students learnt Japanese culture through watching a DVD 'Japan Encyclopaedia', experiencing Japanese calligraphy and

Origami (paper folding) and singing a Japanese song.
