Ever since I was a child I have had strong emotional ties to the bicycle. I remember my first bike extremely well; it increased my mobility considerably – away from my parents. And in my mind’s eye I can still see with equal clarity my childhood dream of a Puch Mistral Ultima with Campagnolo components. Back then it was unaffordable, today one forms part of my collection.

There are two things about bikes that fascinate me in particular. Firstly the simplicity of the idea with which human energy is translated into a maximum of mobility; secondly the translation of this idea into a three dimensional design. Although the concept has been in existence for more than a century, during which time it has undergone constant changes, the principles of the construction have remained unchanged. Then there is also the fact that the bicycle is an exemplary ecological object.

Like with every collector one of my fundamental needs is to be near the object I collect. Until two years ago this was possible, as the attic of my former office was my private museum. And so during the last ten years I “visited” my bikes daily and selected one of them to take a ride on. The attic was a part of the collection, which had been started there and put together with this place in mind. Unfortunately, I had to give up this attic space and during the past two years I was unable to find an alternative.

Making the decision to separate myself from a unique collection that had been built up with immense passion was a protracted and difficult process. For many years I had hoarded, cared for, documented and exhibited my “slender travel animals” (quote: Gabriele Petricek). Looked at in visual terms bicycles for me are anarchical beings, a kind of synonym for untrammelled freedom. Therefore the idea of now setting them free again greatly appeals to me.

During eleven years of work a long list of acknowledgments can develop:Bernhard Angerer, Itai Margula, Alexander Meixner, Josef Perndl, my wife Shan and my father Gottfried. They have played a major part in building up this collection.Lucas Dietrich at Thames and Hudson for making “Cyclepdia” possible.Richard Loncraine together with Patrick Uden for creating a marvellous app which was named app of the week in itunes-uk.Museumsquartier Vienna, Museum Absam, Portland Art Museum, The Vienna City Adminstration, Museum of Applied Arts Vienna, and the Design Museum Holon for presenting an exhibition of the collection. Many other persons and institutions were involved, it is impossible for me to mention them all by name, but my thanks go out to each and everyone!
