Road Safety Prayer
O Lord our God; we know that all people are precious in your
sight, and that you would not want any of your dear ones to be
hurt in any way.
And so we seek your blessing upon our roads asking for your
protection and your guidance on our families.
Instil in us all Father, the virtue of patience, understanding and common sense, praying that we may all drive with
due care and regard for our fellow-road-users, and we ask you to bring us all home again in your peace without
death, injury or trauma.
And so Father, we ask you to bless the roads and all who travel on them.
(Roadwise adapted)
Traffic Management at Sacred Heart
Parking and traffic congestion remains at the forefront of concern within our school community. The majority of
parents drive their child/ren to and from school each day. Congestion occurs at these key times and often our
children are put in dangerous positions. Traffic management around the school is a very complex issue involving
hundreds of people and as such solutions take time to be worked out.
Over the last year the School Education Board (SEB) has been working through potential solutions to traffic issues,
liaised with Monash Council, the Parish and members of our School Community. Surveys have been undertaken
and dangerous and illegal behaviours observed. Parents were invited to share their view on the matter through
forums and email responses.
As a result of this investigation there will be changes to the parking and traffic arrangements around our school
boundaries. These traffic and parking improvements are intended to ease congestion, improve traffic flow,
increase parking options for families and ensure safer visibility of pedestrians at peak times around the school
gates.
The improvements consist of:
The introduction of a new 2 min drop off zone in Mora Ave
Moving permit parking from Mora Ave to outside the church in Johnson St
The implementation of a preferred traffic flow direction to complement these changes.
The changes are expected to occur in the coming week.
A Traffic and Parking Safety Guide has been written for all families in our school community. It is written in plain
language with pictures to assist in understanding. It is in response to behaviour that is illegal and in some cases
potentially life threatening to members of our school and local community at peak times. Many of the issues
2
raised are because of a lack of common courtesy by parents and carer drivers. A hard copy of the Traffic and
Parking Safety Guide will be sent home for all families shortly.
Please take the time to read all the information in this booklet and I encourage you to pass it onto anyone else in
your family network who picks up or drops off your children at school. This is to ensure a smooth transition and a
safer traffic solution for all of our Sacred Heart Community. Additional copies of this booklet are available at the
school office, if there is a need we will arrange copies to be translated into other languages. Please enquire at the
office.
I would like to take the opportunity to thank the School Education Board for their leadership in this matter as well
as for their time and dedication in seeing this project to an end. If this is the type of work in which you have an
interest, the SEB may be a way in which you can contribute to the school community. The SEB AGM is coming up
next month with limited vacancies. Applications are in last newsletter and close shortly.
Regards
Brian Martin

Bread for the Hungry – Can you help? We have established a network to support families in the school who could benefit from free bread once a week. WE NEED A FEW MORE VOLUNTEERS. We require volunteers on a Thursday evening to collect bread from a local baker, bag the bread and drop off at the school. The school will then arrange for distribution. If you would like to know more information or if you are able to help, please contact the school office or speak to myself. – Regards - Brian

The Skoolbag App is live for our school community. This is for both Apple devices from the app
store and android devices from the playstore. As outlined in the newsletter last week, the Skoolbag App provides you with an easy free way to let you know key information about school activities. It provides you with a convenient way to receive school notifications and it communicates directly with iPhone, iPad, Android, and Windows Phones devices. School newsletters, school notices and alerts will be communicated directly to your smartphone through the Skoolbag app. The Skoolbag App can be downloaded from the following locations: For iPhone and iPad users: 1. Click the "App Store" icon on your Apple device. 2. Type "sacred heart oakleigh" in the search. 3. If iPhone, you will see your school appear, click "Free" then "install". 4. If iPad, change the drop list to "iPhone Apps", your school will then be visible, click "Free" then "install". 5. When installed click "Open". 6. Select "OK" to receive push notifications, when asked. 7. Click the "More" button on the bottom right of the App, then "Setup". 8. Toggle on the Push Categories that are applicable for you by tapping the on/off switch. For Android users: You must first have signed up with a Google Account before installing the app. 1. Click the "Play Store" button on your Android Device 2. Click the magnifying glass icon at the top and type in sacred heart oakleigh 3. Click the school name when it appears in the search. 4. Click the "Install" button. 5. Click "Accept" for various permissions (please note, we do not modify any of your personal data on your device). 6. Click "Open" when installed. 7. Click the "More" button on the bottom right of the App, then "Setup". 8. Toggle on the Push Categories that are applicable for you by tapping the on/off switch. Please Note: Some brands of Android phones need the setting in "Notification Manager" changed to "Allow" instead of "Notify" in order for the push notifications to work. The phone must also be running at least version 4 system software to run the app. For Windows Phone users: 1. Go to the Windows Store on your Windows Phone 2. Search for "Skoolbag" in the keyword app search 3. Install the Skoolbag app. 4. Find your school either by using the keyword search or location service. 5. Click the "Pin" icon to pin the school tile to your Windows Phone home screen. 6. Click the "More" button on the bottom right of the App, then "Setup" 7. Toggle the Push Categories that are applicable to you by tapping the on/off switch. Please Note: The Skoolbag Windows Phone App is for 8.1 version Windows Phones. We believe Skoolbag will provide the missing link in the communication between home and school. I encourage you to install the Sacred Heart Skoolbag App on your personal devices.
