The thematic of the ITER Goal Oriented Training Programme on Port Plug Engineering (PPE) is in the field of Engineering Design and Construction, this training program is associated to the procurement of the ITER Port Plug including: design, structural analysis, neutronics, material requirement, nuclear requirement, safety, manufacturing aspect, assembly aspect, maintainability. Six work packages of three years duration are identified: 2 CEA, 1 FZJ, 2 KIT, and 1 HAS. The official starting date of the ITER GOT PPE is 1st September 2008 established for 4 years, the first year being devoted to the recruitment of the trainees. All Contracts have already started and all the trainees have been recruited during the first year, the ITER GOT PPE training program will run from the 01 September of 2008 to the 07 July of 2012. This programme is now running effectively and in good accordance with the spirit of the Task Agreement WP08‐GOT‐ITER_PPE signed with EFDA. At the end of 2011, 92 % of the ITER Goal Oriented Training Programme on Port Plug Engineering is accomplished. Progress reports for the third year have been produced in the beginning of 2012 (see annexe 1 to 6). During the year 2011, the training programme WP 3 and 6 have been completed at 100 %, Gaetano AIELLO get a new contract with KIT (3 years) and Romaric VOINCHET has been hired by Altran, a subsidiary of the Linde German manufacturer of pumping equipment and gas liquefaction, based in Alsace. The WP1 has been stopped in advance this year (completed at 78 %), Miguel DAPENA has been hired by ITER Organisation in the safety division. Concerning other WPs, 6 months are remaining in 2012 for WP2, WP4 and WP5 During 2011, the sharing within the associations is evaluated to 9 person.month and other sharing is evaluated to 5 person.month. A training session has been organized by KIT (7‐10/06/11): Introduction into Vacuum‐ and Cryo‐Technology, Project Management with focus on inter‐cultural aspects. Concerning financial matters, there is no deviation of the budget devoted to the expenditures under additional support (87, 6 % has been used). 2. IDENTIFICATION OF PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED AND CORRECTIVE ACTION(S) TAKEN; ACTIVITIES ON CRITICAL PATH
If you answered b) or c) under 1.), please include a detailed description of the research problems encountered, deviations and/or modifications to the project during the reporting period.

REPORT ON TRAINING ACTIONS The training period between December 2010 and April 2011 has been mainly devoted to the support of the work done for Grant 024 of F4E (Diagnostics integration analysis of equatorial port plug). Training activities: - RCC-MR training course: Introduction to the content and utilization of RCC-MR French nuclear industry code
for the design and development of mechanical components for ITER. - Working activities: - Grant-024 and related tasks: The award of the grant 024 to the consortium PP11 (CEA-ENEA-CIEMAT-IST-
KFKI) put a great amount of urgent work during the beginning of 2011. - The tasks performed in the frame of this grant were:
o Feasibility of integrating the Equatorial Visible/InfraRed Wide Angle Viewing System (WAVS) in a vertical drawer of Equatorial Port Plug 1
o Feasibility of reducing the number of mirrors of the WAVS per Line-of-Sight o Creation of a detailed MCNP model for the WAVS and preliminary calculations of the nuclear heating in
the mirrors o Optimization of the Lines-of-sight paths within Equatorial Port Plug 1 taking into account the neutron
shielding requirements
Communications: - Journée des Trainees - “Études neutroniques pour la conception du diagnostic Visible/Infrarouge”. That event is
proposed on a yearly basis to release the work done by the trainees. Contract resignation: Given the uncertain future for the trainees in their home research centres and the offer of a longer term contract with another entity involved in the fusion research, I decided to announce my resignation to my GOT contract with CEA by the beginning of February 2011. The end of activities took place at the end of April 2011.

Transfer Cask System I supervised the 6-months internship of an engineer student, who have done finite element analysis on the Transfer Cask System. Virtual Reality Room (VR) CEA IRFM has inaugurated its VR room in December 2010 which aim to support engineering studies in the field of remote handling, maintenance and integration of tokamak components. As a member of the VR team, I participated to the integration of software solution, especially MagritteWorks which is our Remote Handling Simulation software. During my 3-months training period in Paris (CEA-Fontenay-aux-Roses), I met the developers of MagritteWorks and learned about VR tools. I have learnt programming (VB.Net) and I have developed software tools for MagritteWorks and an interface to bring the tool more accessible for design office users. Ion Cyclotron Resonance Heating (ICRH) antenna for ITER In a framework of the Grant 026 contract with F4E, CEA IRFM is in charge of the maintenance operation design for mounting / dismounting the RVTL modules of the ICRH antenna in the Hot Cell facility. In this context, I was in charge to build a simulation of this operation with Man in the Loop, and verify thanks to VR tools the feasibility of the operation in the hot cell, as if an operator has to do it by means of a master/slave manipulator system. DEMO I am now in KIT for a training period of 2 months where I study the maintenance of the banana blanket concept.

REPORT ON TRAINING ACTIONS Completed training steps Project and Procurement management The trainee is working on an ongoing project, which handles with the development of Table Top Pellet Injector (TATOP PI). In this project he is the responsible of all the engineering activity, including procurement management as well. During this work, he is in communication with the suppliers and subcontractors, which call forth improving management skills. Main training activities - FEM tasks Task I – Integration of the Wide Angle Visible/IR Viewing System The trainee spent 4 month in CEA/IRFM partner institute, where he handled with a section of the work of the grant F4E-2009-GRT-024 concerning the integration of the wide angle visible/IR viewing system (WAVS) in the Equatorial Port Plug (EPP). The main objective of the work was to produce a preliminary assessment of the integration of the diagnostic (WAVS) in horizontal drawers located in EPP. The task dealt with the first layout determination of the line of sight and the mirror positions of the WAVS into the EPP, without detailed engineering analyses. Task II – Development and Project management of TATOP PI In the home institute of the trainee a new project has began in 2011, which objective is to develop a Table Top Pellet Injector. He supports this ongoing project from engineering side, and he takes part in the management activities, as well. The design part of the work includes 3D CAD modelling, drawing, FEM and analytical calculations, too. After the design phase he is the procurement responsible of the standard elements and of the raw materials for the unique fabricated parts. The communication with the suppliers and subcontractors belongs also to his activities. Before using the installation with real conditions, the equipments are tested in laboratory environment. Task III – Thermal FEM analysis for HCPB-TBM Breeder Unit mock-up test The trainee spent 1,5 month in KIT/INR partner institute, where he was involved in the work of engineer group. The development of Helium Cooled Pebble Bed Test Blanket Module Breeder Unit has come into

such phase, that building of mock-up has become necessary to validate the designed unit in realistic environment. The Breeder Unit is subjected to significant neutron irradiation, which produces heavy heat generation. The preparation of this neutron irradiation is not effortless in laboratory. Hence we can have the possibility to use electrical heaters in the pebble beds to reach the needed internal heat generation and temperature. The aim of this study was to define an adequate layout and power needs of the heaters with using FE methods. Seminars, meetings The trainee has been participated in the following seminars and trainings: December 2010 RCC-MR Codes and Standards, Cadarache, France
Topic: Design and Construction Rules for Mechanical Components of FBR Nuclear Equipment
Organizer: CEA-IRFM/Areva TA 21 April 2011 X. ANSYS Conference – eCon User Meeting, Sóskút, Hungary
