    The Paralympics

In the early hours of the 29th August the Paralympictorch came through Harrow. 2 of our staff Jennieand David went to see it arrive at Aspire in

Stanmore. The local press interviewed David, whospoke about how the Paralympics would make animpact to show what disabled people can achieve.David and Jennie also attended the Paralympics togo to the athletics in the Stadium and David said, Itwas brilliant! David was very glad they were able toget tickets and it is a memory to pass on.

The 2012 Paralympics in London was a milestonefor disabled sports. More than 4,200 athletes from160 nations, a record number of athletes competed. Some 2.7 million tickets were sold for theParalympic Games and the amount of media andtelevision coverage was unprecedented.

It was great to see such positive coverage ofdisabled peoples achievements but how might allthis positive exposure, sporting achievement anddiscussions around disability affect the future ofdisabled people?

65% of people say the Paralympics have changedtheir perception of disability however do you think

this change will be long lasting?

    Changing Places Flush Mob

On the 11th October we joined more than 200people and took part in a flash mob with adifference. The Changing Places flush mob raisedawareness of the Changing Places toilet campaignand the need for more fully accessible disabledtoilets in London.

The campaigners gathered in Trafalgar Square, before suddenly raising toilet brushes in the airmany of them especially decorated. They then frozefor three minutes as passers by looked on.

The Changing Places campaign, sponsored byTotal Hygiene, calls for more Changing Placestoilets in public places, so that people with profoundand multiple learning disabilities can access thesame opportunities as everyone else.

A Changing Places toilet is larger than a standarddisabled toilet and includes a height-adjustablechanging bench, a hoist and room for up to twocarers. The Changing Places toilets also benefit

people with other mobility issues, such as spinal

    Changing Places in London

There are currently just 29 fully accessible

Changing Places toilets in the whole of GreaterLondon.

Just one of Londons top 10 tourist attractions hasa Changing Places toilet.

There is no fully accessible toilet facility atshopping hubs Oxford Circus or Westfield.

There are no Changing Places toilets at any ofthe busiest five rail stations in London.

As a result, many disabled people and their carersare forced to change their loved ones on toilet floorsor to have to stay at home.
