Match NotesGetting in the Swing of Things: After starting the season 4-5, Elmira seems to have turned things around as of late, winning five of their last six matches with EC’s only loss coming against No. 7 UC Santa Cruz in five sets. The EC men enter the weekend on a four-match win streak, win-ning 12-of-15 total sets played, and took home a first-place finish at the Golden Flyer Invitational.

Golden Flyer Awards: At the Golden Flyer Invitational, Elmira received standout performances from a handful of players, including Carlos Faccio ’16, Rob Shade ’15, and Erik Griffin ’16, who were all named to the All-Tourna-ment Team. Additionally, Faccio was tabbed as the tourna-ment’s Most Valuable Player after averaging 9.73 assists per set and logging 11 aces.

Faccio Claims Honors: Carlos Faccio ’16 was not only was named to the All-Tournament Team and tabbed as the Tournament MVP at the Golden Flyer Invitational, he also earned UVC Co-Player of the Week and Corvias ECAC North Region Co-Player of the Week honors. Faccio’s awards are the first conference weekly awards for an Elmira player this season.

Looking Ahead: The Soaring Eagles will take nearly a week off from competition as Elmira’s next match is scheduled for Saturday, February 21st, when the Purple and Gold travel to Rochester, NY to take on Ramapo College at the Nazareth Quad Match. The opening serve is set to take place at 1:30 p.m.

Scouting the Violets: Nick Benson ’16 leads the offense with 4.18 kills per set while Patrick Merrick ’17 has set up the attack, averaging 10.43 assists per set. Benjamin Oxnard ’18 and Andrew Quirk ’15 have carried the load defensively with 2.38 digs per set, each.

Vassar So Far: Vassar College enters the weekend with a 6-4 overall record and are winners of three of their last four contests. The Brewers have proven they can compete with the nation’s elite, however, as Vassar boasts a nationally-ranked win against then-No. 11, NYU.

Scouting the Brewers: Vassar is led offensively by Brian Manley ’18 and Reno Kriz ’16, who average 2.50 and 2.48 kills per set, respectively. Zechariah Lee ’18 leads Vassar in assists with 8.19 per set, while Trey Cimorelli ’17 owns a team-best 2.06 digs per set.
