FOREIGN DOCTORS LICENSING
The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board conducts
exams to foreign trained doctors in January, April and
September for purposes of:
1) Internship
INTRODUCTION
2) Registration
Peer reviews are conducted as per need for the purposes of:
1) Specialists recognition for foreign trained specialists who are
Kenyans
2) Temporary Licence for foreign doctors

COMPULSORY ATTACHMENT
All pre-internship and pre-registration candidates are
required to have completed at least three (3) months
compulsory attachment in an approved internship trainingcompulsory attachment in an approved internship training
centre before sitting for the Board exams.

BOARD EXAMINATIONS
The are three (3) types of examinations:-
1. Internship Qualifying Examinations (IQE)
2. Pre-Registration Examinations
3. Peer Review Examinations

BOARD EXAMINATIONS
a) Foreign trained doctors who posses qualifications equivalent to
MBChB and BDS from University of Nairobi are required to sit
Board examinations in order to determine their eligibility for
either registration or internship training. These examinations
are given under Cap. 253 section II.
b) Graduates from the East African Partner States (EAC) who
qualify from approved medical and dental schools are
exempted from Board examinations under EAC Boards/Councils
Reciprocal Recognition rules and procedures.

INTERNSHIP QUALIFYING
EXAMINATIONS (IQE)
c. (Registration, Licensing, Assessment and Internship)
Rules, Section 15.
d. IQE is administered to newly qualified graduates who
have not undergone internship training in the country of
training. Candidates who pass those exams are required
to submit a copy of a posting letter from the Ministry of
Health in order to be issued with Internship Licence by
the Board.

PRE-REGISTRATION
EXAMINATIONS
• This examination is administered to Kenyan undergraduates
who upon completion of their training undertake the mandatory
internship training in the country of training and have been
registered therein.
• Candidates who pass this exam are then required to apply for
Pre-registration examination
• Candidates who pass this exam are then required to apply for
Permanent Registration in the prescribed manner. It is also
administered to candidates who are not Kenyans by birth, are
registered in their countries of origin and have acquired Kenyan
citizenship by marriage or naturalization

PEER REVIEW EXAMINATIONS
Peer Review is done for the following: -
1. Kenyans who hold post graduate training from
outside Kenya and wish to be registered and
recognized as specialists.
Peer review
2. Foreign doctors who possess post graduate
training and wish to work in salaried positions as
specialists in defined institutions. They are not
allowed to engage in private practice on their on
behalf. 12

PROCEDURE OF APPOINTING EXAMINERS
Examiners are identified by Chief Examiner Medical/Dental
and subsequently appointed by the Chairman of the Board
in writing.
APPOINTMENT OF EXAMINERS
All the examiners must be holders of the appropriate
postgraduate qualification.

Mode of Examination
The examination is divided into two (2):-
a) MCQ (Written) – 100 marks
b) Clinicals – 100 marks
Clinicals comprise of a series of short cases cutting
INTERNSHIP QUALIFYING AND PRE-REGISTRATION EXAMS
Clinicals comprise of a series of short cases cutting across the four major disciplines. Currently proposing an OSCE format.
Pass mark is 50% however; a candidate must attain a pass mark of 50% in the clinical exam in order to be awarded a pass in the entire exam.

Number of examination sittings
• Candidates are allowed a maximum of three (3) exam
attempts only.
• If failing for the third time one can be allowed further
attempts on successful appeal to the Chairman of the Board.

Releasing of examination results
The results are released through the Board’s website
