• Single click on the words

“Keyboard Short Course” or the colorful keyboard.

• When students enter with their login, they will not see the Teacher Manager link. As a teacher you can see both.

Enter as a Student


• Single click on “Open existing student file” button.

Selecting Student Data File • Click to “Choose your class:”.

• Click to “Choose data file:” (student name—your name)

• Click the “Open” button.


• Enter the ID or Password: “1” or Password assigned by the teacher, and click OK.

Messages are read first! • Messages are great for praise or “get busy” reminders.

• Students can also message the teacher (not other students) by clicking on the Compose button.

• To return a message to the teacher, click the “Reply” button.


Replying to Teacher• Type a short reply to the teacher. You will see it later

in the Teacher Manager.

• Click the “Send” button.

Serial Code• If students purchase their own textbooks/serial codes (such

as colleges, personal purchases), a new serial code needs to be entered here. Schools with site licenses will not see this.


If the serial code has not been purchased yet, students may click on the Demo button. A few lessons are available so students can begin immediately while making arrangements to purchase their textbook/serial code.


• You are now in your data file.• Single click on “User Info”

User Info—Changing the ID/Password

• Select the “ID/Password” and change it. (In the Teacher Manager the password can be locked by the teacher so it cannot be changed.)

• “Confirm ID/Password” by typing it again.

• Click the “OK” button.


• Single click to select “Setup”.

Setup• The purpose of the Setup is to show students and

interested parents what the standards of the course are, but they are dimmed and cannot be changed.

• Click on each tab to see the standards of the course.

• After viewing the tabs, click “Finish” in the “Next Step” tab (or click on the close button).


Introduction• Single click to select “Introduction”.


Introduction • Select each tab to go through the Introduction.

• Click the close button to close this window.


Lessons Menu• Single click “Lessons Menu” to see all the lessons.


• Lesson 1 – Home Row is selected. Line 1 (in red) is selected.

At the end of the line, after you type “kkk”, press the Enter key—no space. (Typing a space counts as an error.) Begin again and keep typing until the timer stops you.

The Timer button indicates that this is a 15-second practice timing.

Slide the “Adjust Font” button to the right to make the letters easier to read. Try it!

• Getting ready to practice—notice:

When you type Line 1, you will see that the timing screen doesn’t show what you are typing—it just reads “Timing in progress…”. Students have to keep their eyes on the copy or they lose their place and make an error. Your teacher has set the accuracy rate at 0 errors to record.

Look at fingers, lose place, make error, take timing over!

Lessons Menu—Get Set

If you know you made a mistake, and want to abandon this drill and start over, click the Timer button. It will reset.


• Lesson 1- Home Row. Practice Lines 1-4 now so you can see your scores in the Progress Report.

The Timer will begin when you press the first key. You may take the practice timing as many times as necessary (unlimited) to get a goal speed to record in the “Best Three Speeds”.

When you reach your goal—32 wpm in this example, click “No” to ”Do you want to take this timing again?” It will automatically advance Line 2.

Lessons Menu—GO!


• Select “Lesson 3—O,R,N” Line 1 will appear.

This lesson presents a new key—the “O” key. See blue lettering at the top.

Click the “Show Reach” button to see a visual of which finger depresses the “O” key. The blinking red “O” means that you use the red “L” finger to make the reach. Press it several times for perspective.

Click on the close button to return to the Main Menu.

Progress Reports• Notice that “Simple” is showing on the Progress Reports icon. The

Simple report shows the one best timing in each lesson. If you clicked the arrow and selected “Comprehensive”, it would show the best three speeds of all the practice for each exercise.

• Single click on the Simple Progress Reports icon.


The Progress Report (Simple Report) shows the best timing score for each exercise that meets the accuracy standard the teacher set in the Teacher Manager.

Progress Reports• The Simple Progress Report below shows:

Lesson numbers in blue across the top of each row Lesson Avg in green appears when lessons are completed Individual scores for each exercise is listed

• Click on the Close button to return to the main menu.


Current Grade Report• The Grade Reports icon shows “Current” grade to date,

which can be used to quickly see the Mid-Term grade.

• Single click on the Grade Reports icon. Compare the AVERAGE WPM SCORE to the Grading Scale to see the approximate periodic/mid-term grade for completed lessons.

Final Grade Report


• Grades are determined from the Best Scores in the Progress Report. For a higher Mid-Term or Final grade, go back to the Progress Report and re-do any low-scoring practice timings.

• Click on the arrow on the Grade Reports icon and select “Final”. Single click on the Grade Reports icon.


Higher scores on the Progress Report will usually translate into a higher grade.

Final Grade Report(When all lessons have been completed)

• Remember: For a higher Final grade, go back to the Progress Report and re-do any low-scoring practice timings. Higher scores that meet the accuracy standard will replace lower scores.


Save & Close File• Close Final Grade Report Window.

• Click on “Save & Close File” button.

• Every 12 minutes students’ scores go seamlessly back to the servers at Ellsworth Publishing Company. Students should always end a keyboarding session by clicking on “Save & Close File” to insure that all practice is recorded. (If a student should [x] out of the internet and run to the next class, and the 12-minute cycle has not arrived again, several minutes of practice could be lost.)


Viewing Student Scores in the Teacher Manager

• Students never have to print or turn anything in because teachers can see student scores in the Teacher Manager.

• Click on the back arrow on your browser to return to the web site of the school.

• Click on the Teacher Manager link for Keyboard Short Course.


• Click on “View Student Progress”.• Select your Class.• Select your student—notice the last practice date by the name.• Click on “Simple Report”. Click on “Get Report”.



• Notice the scores! Whenever teachers want to see students’ scores, just go into the Teacher Manager, View Student Progress, and see them—no need to print or turn in anything!



Getting Messages in Teacher Manager

• Select Message Center.• Click on “Message Inbox” and select a class.• Messages for that class will appear. Double click anywhere

on the student message and it will appear.

Important!• Students: Keep practicing on each exercise from the

beginning in Lesson 1 until you reach your goal! The lessons are very easy at first to help your fingers move quickly and accurately. (If you move on with low recorded scores, you could finish with low recorded scores.)
