The Ellensburg Chamber of Commerce has been work-ing to improve the Ellens-

burg economy and quality of life in Kittitas County since 1908. A not-for-profit business advocacy organization, the Chamber is not a municipal, county, state or fed-eral agency. The primary funding for the Chamber’s programs is through the voluntary annual in-vestments made by our more than 400 member businesses and orga-nizations. Our mission is to make Ellens-burg and Kittitas County a better place to live, visit, and transact business by providing advocacy, business assistance, connections, and information, thus creating a positive business climate in which companies can earn a fair profit, create jobs and improve the quality of life.

Kittitas County is where you can explore some of the most varied and spectacular geography found any-where in the Pacific Northwest. From neighboring forests and a winding river, to expansive deserts and lush pastures, this county has a setting and adventure for every taste. It’s considered one of the best spots for outdoor recreation, and attracts people from all over for its unmatched Blue Ribbon fly fishing, snowmobiling, and hunting. Ellensburg is in the south-central part of the county and easily acces-sible by Interstate 90, 82 and SR 97. It’s only 110 miles east of Seattle and about 35 northwest of Yakima. Because of its convenient central location, it’s the perfect place for those located throughout the state who need to gather for conferences or workshops. There are many convenient hotels, bed and breakfasts, inns, restaurants, Internet cafés, fuel stations, and other conveniences located throughout the city. Several of the larger hotels have full busi-ness amenities, such as conference rooms, high-speed Internet, busi-ness stations, workout rooms, cater-ing, and more. A cornerstone to Ellensburg’s history is Central Washington Uni-versity. The university brings a cul-

tural vibrancy to the city and more dollars to local businesses. There are year-round guest lectures, per-formances, art shows, and sporting events at the university. CWU also provides opportunities for those who want to contin-ue on with their higher educa-tion, providing bachelor and master degree programs. The university has many excel-lent programs, including accounting, science, wine studies, math-ematics, and education. Because there’s a university in town, opening a business in El-lensburg is a great option. Not only is Ellensburg welcoming to those looking to do business here, there’s also a vast resource down the street—thousands of students eager to be employed. Property and sales taxes are also lower here than in other parts of the state, making Ellensburg, as well as the entire county, a great place to do business. With a recently up-dated 20-year Comprehensive Plan, the city of Ellensburg has made it clear it’s ready for more business by opening up several more areas for commercial and light industrial. Steeped in rich history and an enthusiasm for the progressive, Ellensburg is considered by lo-cals to have a superb quality of

We are happy to have you in our city, and hope you will find your niche here. In the meantime, I’d like to tell you a little bit about Ellensburg. As you may have already noticed, this is a really nice place. We’re a city that’s filled with beautiful buildings, wide, welcoming sidewalks and many specialty stores. However, under-neath the scenery is something even better — citizens who truly love their community. It’s the devoted Ellensburg folks that make this place so great. They volunteer their time and talents, open the interesting stores, bring in thousands of visitors each year for festivals and events. Without them, we wouldn’t have been on the Na-tional Trust for Historic Preservation’s Dozen Distinctive Destinations for 2007. We’re really proud of that award and eager to show everyone exactly why the organization found Ellens-burg so fascinating. So what makes this place special? There are probably too many details to list, but I’d like to take this time to tell you about some of the more significant ones. One of the most economically and culturally important things Ellensburg has to offer is its annual events. This city doesn’t skimp when it comes to having a good time. Nearly every month there’s something happening.

Starting in Janu-ary, we have our annual WinterHop BrewFest, and Febru-ary follows with the Spirit of the West Cowboy Gathering. March brings the Yakima River Canyon Marathon. In May we have the (Ellensburg National Art Show & Auction) as well as the TRIOBA Adven-ture Race. In June, downtown Ellensburg fills up for Dachs-hunds on Parade.

July brings athletes who come to test their abilities in the Whisky Dick Triathlon, and later in the month, the city fills up for Jazz in the Valley. Summer keeps on sizzling in August and September with the Ellensburg Rodeo and Kittitas County Fair — the city’s two largest events. We also have the 24-hour Paint Ellensburg art-ist gathering and auction in Septem-ber. In October we host the annual Ellensburg Film Festival and in November we hold our community event, Moments to Remember. This event is focused on residents and reunions; children especially love all the holiday activities. We strongly encourage all newcomers to make it a family tradition. In between all those festivals and events there is the Kittitas County Farmers Market, which runs every Saturday from May through October. Like our large coastal neighbor, Seattle, we too have an art walk. Ours is every first Friday, all year round. Central Washington University also offers year-round events, and its Presidential Speaker and Perform-ing Arts Series has attracted some big names, including The Chieftains, National Public Radio’s Garrison Kellior, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. and Jean-Michel Cousteau. The univer-

sity’s homecoming weekend, which packs the city with students and their parents, features a performer every year. In past years, Ellensburg has welcomed Jay Leno, Drew Carey, and Kathy Griffith. If that’s not enough for you, there’s also a plethora of out-door activities. You can choose from snowmobiling, fly-fishing, hunting, hiking, skiing, camping, rafting, boat-ing, biking and more. Every season offers a sport here in Kittitas County. Well, I could go on and on, but I’ll stop here.

The Ellensburg Chamber of Com-merce, established in 1908, is an es-sential part of Ellensburg’s economy, history and cultural life. The private, nonprofit association has hundreds of members, includ-ing business owners and individuals. It represents a huge part of Ellens-burg’s economic base, and provides its members with invaluable network-ing opportunities. It also administers multiple committees and task forces that cover many issues city-wide. The chamber offers dozens of benefits for its members, from mar-keting services and opportunities to travel discounts. It is constantly adding to its already lengthy list of member benefits, and has recently added more, including health insur-ance, which provides members with individual and group plans, group

dental and vi-sion, discount prescriptions, long-term care insur-ance, Medi-care part D prescriptions and Medicare Supplements. It also recently added travel-ing discounts,

conference calling and an online shopping mall. Some of its other ben-efits include networking events, such as Business After Hours, and Busi-ness Before Hours, referral services, a monthly newsletter, which provides members with affordable advertising opportunities, an informative Web site (www.ellensburg-chamber.com), relo-cation packages, discounts on things such as credit card processing, and long distance telephone services, membership mailing labels and more. The chamber adds new members each month and is currently focus-ing on business retention, as well as recruiting new businesses. Adding services, such as the ones mentioned above, will help keep successful busi-nesses operating in Ellensburg. Over the past several years, the chamber has helped increase the number of tourists exponentially by hosting events such as the extremely popular WinterHop BrewFest, held every January, the community event, Moments to Remember, held every

Ellensburg, is a city of just over 17,000 and located in the heart of Washington State, it is the county seat and the commercial hub of Kit-titas County. Home to Central Washington University and hundreds of artists and small business owners, Ellensburg has a varied and diverse culture. If you’re unfamiliar with the area, a great resource is the Ellensburg Chamber of Commerce. It can di-rect you to every organization, busi-ness, school, or person you need

Ellensburg is also home to a portion of the Iron Horse State Park, a trail that winds through Washing-ton for hundreds of miles, several beautiful city parks, and some of the best blue-ribbon fly fishing in the United States, located along the Yakima River. place may find Ellensburg’s pace a bit slower at first. But with a slower pace comes incredibly attentive customer service, friendly motorists who wave you through the cross-walk, and people who remember your name. Ellensburg has a strong sense of community because of its literally thousands of volunteers that make things like the rodeo, the Kittitas County Relay for Life, Jazz in the Valley, and Hospice Friends a real-ity. In fact, this city is known for be-ing extremely “volunteer friendly.” It also has a reputation as a town that loves a good party. Nearly every month of the year there’s a festival of some kind, but even on a regular Friday or Saturday night, the downtown can get pretty lively. Central Washington University students come out to explore the nightlife and they help make Ellens-burg vibrant. Because the down-town area is so pedestrian-friendly, it’s not uncommon to see groups of people simply walking around,

Kittitas County has strong agricultural roots. Which are still a major part of the present-day economy. Federal statistics show there are approximately 230,646 acres farmed in Kittitas County, and that 30,000 of those acres grow the county’s largest cash crop, timothy hay. The average farm size is 248 acres. Crop sales produce an estimated $39 million annually, with $30 million of that from timothy hay. County livestock produces $18 mil-lion, and it ranks third in the state for sheep production and fourth for beef cattle. The average production market value per farm is $61,000. The county is the largest pro-ducer of hay in the state, and its timothy hay is known worldwide for its superb quality. Approximately 250 farmers growth timothy hay,

which is exported across the nation and the globe. One of the biggest buyers of timothy hay is Japan, which uses it for its racehorse and dairy industries. An increasing amount of the county’s timothy hay is also going to South Korea. The price of timothy hay has increased from $240 a ton in 2006, to $280 in 2007 for top quality hay. Anderson Hay and Grain Co., the county’s eighth largest employer, exports most of the county’s hay. Other crops produced in Kittitas County include multiple types of grains, oats, dry beans and peas, vegetables, potatoes, and various orchard fruits. The county’s agricultural suc-cess is primarily controlled by climate, water supply, and drainage conditions. Most of the county’s crops are irrigated by three moun-tain reservoirs, which are depen-dent on mountain snow pack.

Central Washington University, established in 1891, is the largest employer in Kittitas County and a great resource for local business owners seeking employees or other university-related services. Some of its strongest programs, which attract students from across the nation, include business, educa-tion, music, and the sciences. The university has four different colleg-es: arts and humanities, business, education, and professional studies and sciences. Under those col-leges, students have many under-graduate degrees to choose from. It also offers teaching certification and several graduate programs in studies including accounting, family and consumer sciences, health, industrial and engineering technol-ogy, organizational development, resource management, as well as several others. The university has six satel-lite campuses, located in Yakima, Moses Lake, Wenatchee, Lynwood, Lakewood, and Des Moines. There are more than 6,500 students at-tending classes at the satellite campuses. The main campus is about 380 acres in size and is easily manage-able by foot. It recently erected the new, state-of-the-art Student Union and Recreation Center (SURC).

The 220,000-square-foot center has a large theater that seats 330, a ballroom that seats 1,000, and the third largest climbing wall at any university in the nation. It also has a large workout center, a bookstore, many office spaces, the campus’ radio station, KCWU 88.1 The ‘Burg, a convenience store, and multiple dining options. The SURC, an Inter-net hotspot, is considered CWU’s main activity hub. Along with its new construction, CWU is constantly offering cultural and educational activities for the community. It hosts guest lectures, entertainers, concerts, and is home to the Sarah Spurgeon Art Gallery. The Ellensburg School District has one high school, one middle school, and three elementary schools. There are about 3,000 students total in the district. In 2005, the district unveiled its newly-constructed, $21 million Ellensburg High School. It boasts a 2,000-seat gymnasium, which also has 16 basketball hoops and retractable bleachers, many new computers, technologically-ad-vanced science labs, and probably most importantly, room to accom-modate more students as Ellens-burg grows. Each school provides a well-rounded education, and offers students a variety of subjects and after-school activities. The high school has several different athletic teams, including cross country, bas-ketball, baseball, football, wrestling, golf, soccer, swimming, softball, volleyball, tennis, and track. Kittitas County has one hospi-tal, located in Ellensburg. There is also a large, newly renovated and state-of-the-art medical clinic, the Cle Elum Medical Center, located in Cle Elum, which is about 30 miles northwest of Ellensburg. The Kittitas Valley Community Hospital (KVCH) is a level-four trauma hospital that is licensed for 50 acute care beds and offers 24-hour emergency care, inpatient and outpatient surgical services, critical care, a family birthing cen-ter, respiratory care, and labora-tory and imaging services. In 2002, KVCH underwent a $11.5 million expansion and renovation. KVCH’s network of physicians specialize in family practice, inter-nal medicine, pediatrics, physical therapy, speech therapy, occupa-tional therapy, general surgery, orthopedics, OB/GYN, ophthalmol-ogy, ear, nose and throat, oncol-ogy, podiatry, and pulmonology. KVCH also offers diabetes support groups, multiple types of cancer groups, asthma awareness, bereavement support, childbirth classes in English and Spanish and smoking cessation classes. Ellensburg has a large selec-tion of other health care providers ranging in all medical specialties, including family practitioners, pediatrics, dental, eye, hearing, psychiatry, orthopedics, podia-try, chiropractors, long-term care facilities, alternative medicines, acupuncture, therapeutic massage, midwife services, and more. You can find most of these online at the Ellensburg Chamber of Com-merce’s Web site, www.ellensburg-chamber.com. Ellensburg also has hospice care services. Hospice Friends, a local non-profit, offers several free services for those who are terminally ill or for anyone suf-fering from an illness that leaves them home-bound. Some of their services include volunteer support, medical supplies, and equipment, bereavement support, transporta-tion, vigil services, and more. It is funded by donations and be found on the Web at hospicefriends.net.

Because Kittitas County is so dry and sunny in the summer, and cov-ered in snow in the winter, it attracts people from across the Northwest year round. The area is best known for its fly fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, skiing, and hiking. Yakima River’s fly fishing opportunities are bountiful, and there are several professional outfits dedicated to giving those of all skill levels the best experience possible when fishing for their dream-catch of Rainbow, Steelhead, or Cut-throat trout.

Hunting is primarily a fall sport in Kittitas County, but there are other seasons as well. Deer, elk, ducks, pheasants, and turkeys are what’s primarily hunted here. Deer and elk seasons start in September and go until early December. Various loca-tions around the county sell the proper permits. More information about hunting in Kittitas County can be found at the Washington State De-partment of Fish and Wildlife’s Web site, wdfw.wa.gov. Snowmobiling is considered prime in the upper portion of Kittitas County, which is filled with dozens of snow parks. The parks, which gen-erally require a permit, have conve-nient parking lots and hundreds of groomed trails that are perfect for cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and snowshoeing. Also in the upper portion of the county is Suncadia resort, a new, pre-mier community that boasts some of the finest golfing in the state. It also has numerous hotel facilities, restau-rants, spas, trails, and more. There are many other activities to
