I am looking for some missing words. In TM 342, we read:

"There should be a division of the field, or some other plan should be devised, to change the present order of things. . . .

"The president of the General Conference should have the privilege of deciding who shall stand by his side as counselors."

In every occasion on the CD-Rom, the elipses are either there, or they are omitted, but no indication is made what wasdeleted. (I searched with the query: "change-present-order division".) Is there an unpublished document that shows whatwas omitted? If so, I would like to request a copy.

Yes, there is an unpublished document. It is Letter 24a, 1896. Several years ago the White Estate instituted a "permanentloan" policy so that people who wished to see documents or portions of them that were not in print could request thedocument from the White Estate. We send them out on permanent loan; the user does not have to return the item.

There are some limits to this policy, as you might well expect. One is that we cannot process large requests; the purpose ofthe policy is not to copy everything anyone asks for, or we would soon be doing nothing else. So we limit it to no morethan two or three items. Those needing more should go to one of the White Estate centers where they can better do theirresearch. By the way, we expect in a couple of years to have the whole letter and manuscript file available on a CD-ROM,so those intending to do extensive work in the letters and manuscripts will be able to do it right on their own computers.

The other limit to the policy is that the White Estate reserves publication rights to material not previously published. Inother words, documents sent on permanent loan are for personal study, not for publication or distribution to others.

Would you like me to send you the document in question under these conditions? I can do so, but I will wait to hear fromyou since I don't know whether you were asking for it for publication purposes. Let me know. God bless.

I recently saw where the published writings of Mrs. White were available on CD. The word "published" caught myattention. What of her writings have not been published?

There are about 60,000 pages of Mrs. White's letters and manuscripts known to exist. (We have them in our collection atthe various White Estate offices.) A rough guess would be that about half of the material has been published somewhere.Of the part that has not been published, a major portion of it adds nothing new to what is already in print. Mrs. White oftengave similar counsel to more than one person. But almost every new topical compilation that is published these days has atleast some new material in it that has not previously been published.

Sometime this coming year the White Estate will publish a CD-ROM that has the entire letter and manuscript collection onit. That way anyone can read and search everything that we have without having to come to a White Estate facility. Wemay not even then call those the "published" writings, since they are not in print on paper. But they will be easilyavailable.

Thank you for contacting the Ellen G. White Estate. I saw your message when I checked the logs this morning. Perhapsyou received an automated reply stating that the computer didn't recognize the commands, etc. That is because yourmessage went to the automated server rather than to an e-mail account. But I'm happy to try to answer your question. Ifyou have further questions, feel free to contact me at this e-mail address.

Is there a way to access the unpublished writings of Mrs. White? Yes, but not electronically (yet--see below). The WhiteEstate has more than a dozen offices around the world, almost all of them at major educational institutions belonging tothe church. Each of these offices has a complete set of the letters and manuscripts of Mrs. White, duplicating the set at themain office at the General Conference in Silver Spring. Here at Andrews we have the first of these facilities to beestablished. I guess that makes us kind of the "granddad" among the others, chronologically at least. During the currentterm there is a class of about 100 seminarians studying the Ellen G. White writings, and one of their assignments is tospend a number of hours reading in the letters and manuscripts. So we are keeping busy, more than usual, helping them.

However, travel to one of these offices may not be practical for many people. The White Estate is now engaged indeveloping a CD-ROM that will have all of the letters and manuscripts of Mrs. White on it. We had thought it might beavailable by the end of 1997, but that proved too ambitious. Now we hope it will be out before the end of 1998. Even thatgoal may be beyond our reach--time will tell. But we are moving toward completing the project as quickly as possible.

Even without this material being easily available yet, we are not impoverished in access to the instruction that has comethrough Ellen G. White. During her lifetime Mrs. White put into print the main lines of her counsel to the church. Sinceher death the White Estate, following the instructions she gave in her will, has published quite a bit more from her letterand manuscript file to meet the needs of the growing church. I do not anticipate new and startling revelations to come fromthe electronic publication of the letters and manuscripts. I think, rather, that it will give us a clearer glimpse into Mrs.White's life, concerns, and methods of labor. We will also get easier access to some details about the Adventist work inthose days.

I would like to request a copy of Manuscript 157, 1899, which is included in part in Evangelism, p. 512. I am doing someresearch on worship, and would like to read the article in its entirety. Please let me know what I must do to obtain it. Also,I understand that the White Estate is working on a CD-Rom that will include all of Ellen White's writings, published andunpublished. Sure, we can do this for a limited number of such things. I will need your mailing address. We will send you a photocopyof the manuscript on "permanent loan," along with a form to sign and return to us agreeing to abide by the conditions ofthe loan. These are that the White Estate retains exclusive publication rights, with the exception of what the law calls "fairuse" for research purposes.

Yes, the White Estate is working on producing a CD-ROM of the letters and manuscripts. (I have not heard that the plan isto combine this on one CD with the published writings.) Currently there is no schedule for its release. The White Estatehas been understaffed for years, and there is much yet to be done on the project. But we do hope to move it forward. I justcan't predict when it will be ready.
