Greetings! Here we are in the midst of another brutal

Florida winter. While we are all huddled up in our heavy

coats, gloves and hats, the Snow Birds are walking the

beach in shorts and tee shirts and going for swims in the

Gulf. Speaking of which, some of our regular visitors from

up north have started checking in at the Lodge again this

year. When you see any of our northern visitors, or anyone

else you don't know, please say hello and make them feel

welcomed at the "Friendliest Little Elks Lodge in Florida".

Now that the holidays are over the Lodge is back to its

normal schedule. Please check the calendar in this Hoof

Prints for important dates during the month. We are

expecting another busy month at the Lodge in February. All

the usual events are back on schedule: Bingo every

Monday, Tacos every Tuesday, Darts every Wednesday,

meetings and Queen of Hearts every Thursday, live music

and food every Friday and our new electronic raffle

machines every day of the week.

In addition to the usual events, our quarterly blood drive

will be held on Sunday, February 6th, from 10:00 AM til 3:00

PM. We have tentatively scheduled a breakfast buffet in

the Lodge for that morning. Also, the Lodge Secretary, Lisa

Levchik, is leading the effort to stage another great

Valentine's Night Gala Dinner and Dance. This will be

something to look forward to.

The results of the vote in January on the proposal to rebuild

the Lodge boat docks will have been decided by the time

you receive this edition of Hoof Prints. Provided the

proposal voted on in January received an affirmative vote

from the membership, the Board of Directors will begin

developing a plan to lease the new boat slips. Any changes

to the way the Lodge handles leasing the boat slips to

members in the future, have not been determined. This will

be a topic for discussion at the Board of Directors meetings

for the next few months. The Board will be soliciting input

from the membership. We appreciate those of you who

have already expressed your opinions on how you think

things should be handled. The Board will collect all your

input and try to develop a consensus and present a new

lease agreement to the Lodge membership at a later date.

We have time to put together a good plan as construction

is not expected to begin before May at the earliest.

On Thursday, the 10th, nominations will be taken for new

Lodge officers for the coming year. Elections for those new

officers will be held at the Lodge meeting on Thursday,

February 24th. More on this elsewhere in Hoof prints.

One last item that I forgot to mention last month. Our

Lodge held its Elks Hoop Shoot contest at the Gulf Breeze

Recreation Center on December 9, 2021. Due to Covid this

was the first Hoop Shoot the Lodge has had in a couple of

years and even now due to restrictions at the Rec. Center

we were not allowed to let the 8 to 9 age group to

participate. However, we had 35 boys and girls in the 10 to

11 and 12 to 13 age groups participate. We had three

winning entrants; girls (12-13) Maddie Harrell, boys (10-11)

Jayden Barnes and boys (12-13) Zeplin Vincent. These

three winners advanced to the District Hoop Shoot held in

Crestview on January 9th. Our entrant, Zeplin Vincent, won

the District title for (12-13) boys and will go on to the

Regional Hoop Shoot in Lake City on January 29.

Unfortunately, I do not have the results of that contest at

the time of this writing. Thanks to all the kids for their

participation. I certainly hope they benefitted from the

event and most importantly had fun. Very special thanks to

the Co-Chairs of this year's Hoop Shoot, Terry Mink and

John Stanhagen, and all the other great Elks that

volunteered to assist with registration, officiating, score

keeping and herding cats, er, I mean directing the

participants.

Don't forget... come to the Lodge, get involved, volunteer

your time and help out with one of the many events at the

Lodge.

February greetings! Perhaps the biggest news is the vote that we, as a group, made at our January meeting to move our meeting night from the second Thursday of each month, to the first Thursday of each month. This was done to give our female Elks the opportunity to join the LOE’s and attend our meetings (since the Elks meet on the second Thursday) while also allowing them to be Elks! This issue was brought to light after attending the annual FLOE Conference last September, whereby we learned that female Elks are allowed and encouraged to join their respective lodge’s women’s auxiliary. In an effort to experience continued growth of our group at #497 we feel that it is essential to have our meeting on a night that female Elks can attend and not be in conflict with the Elks meeting night. This required a change to our By-Laws and will commence beginning on the Elk new year in April. With this being said, if you are a female Elk, you are welcome and encouraged to come to our April meeting or any thereafter to sit in and check us out to see if joining our group might be something you are interested in. You will find that being a member of the LOE’s of this lodge to be a rewarding, fun experience that will only enhance your membership as an Elk. Keep watching our monthly article in the Hoofprints for updates to upcoming meetings.

The Elks Quarterly Meeting will be the first weekend of February and will be held at the Florida Elks Youth Camp in Umatilla, FL. What does this have to do with the LOE’s you ask? Well, the FLOE (Florida Ladies Of Elks) officers and delegates also meet at this and the 2 other Elk meetings during the year. This is relevant to us since Harriet Gossett, Helen Pratt and myself are delegates for the Northwest district for FLOE. We will be attending this event along with our husbands, Elks Darrell Gossett, Cap Pratt and Paul Ross. The purpose of the delegate role for FLOE’s is to assimilate the information gathered on a state level to our own ladies auxiliary group and those of our district, or if there is no ladies auxiliary at district lodges, then the information will be given to the Exalted Ruler of that lodge. We are excited to attend this function and will keep you all in the know!

Our next meeting will be February 10 in the lodge library at 7pm. The floor will be open for nominations of new LOE officers for the upcoming Elk year beginning in April. If you are interested in ANY officer position, please let me know so you can be nominated. See you at lodge!

The Dinner/Dance is on February 14, 2022 from 6pm-10pm. Surf and Turf

will be the main course and Six Piece Suits will be the entertainment again

this year. We are limiting tickets to members/spouses (max 4 tickets per

person). If seats are still available, we will open up to non-member guests.

Tickets go on sale Saturday, January 22 at 2pm on the second floor.

Nomination and Election of Lodge Officers

thNominations: February 10thElections: February 24

At our first meeting this month, 10 February, we will

open nominations of Officers for the 2022-2023

fraternal year that begins 1 April. The Lodge Past

Exalted Rulers will preside at that meeting. We will

vote on those nominated at the second meeting on

24 February.

Eleven of the 15 Officer positions will be vacant and

require a replacement. Of those eleven positions to

be filled, seven are to be elected by the members.

They are: Exalted Ruler, Leading Knight, Loyal

Knight, Lecturing Knight, Secretary, Treasurer and 5

Year Trustee.

If you think you may be interested but do not know

what the job entails, ask any current officer or any

Past Exalted Ruler (PER). Any member in good

standing may be nominated for any of those

positions by any other member in good standing.

Just be sure you are nominated at the first meeting

this month. Nominations for a particular office will

not be accepted at the second meeting unless no

one was nominated at the first meeting, or the

nominee has withdrawn his/her name. Don't have

anyone to nominate you? Any Elk can do it.

The other 4 officers are appointed by the new

Exalted Ruler. They are: Esquire, Chaplain, Inner

Guard and Tiler. The ER Elect will be looking to fill

those positions with volunteers as soon as he/she is

elected. Volunteer for one.

All new Officers will be installed sometime between

15 March and 15 April on a date agreed upon by the

Exalted Ruler Elect and the lodge PER Association.

The Exalted Ruler Elect will also be looking for

members to fill any vacant Lodge Committee

positions. Find him or her, ask what positions need

to be filled and volunteer for one. The ER cannot do

it all. He or she needs your help.

Fraternally,

Beryle Farmer, PER
