Elise S MY12 – The 2ZR-FE Engine explainedCompact and robust, combining Toyota technology with Lotus performance expertise

What are the benefits of this new engine?

1) More torque thanks to higher boost pressure More flexible drive, instant response out of corners

2) Lower fuel consumption Reduces the cost of ownership

3) Lower CO2 emissions Reduces the cost of ownership due to tax

How does it work?

The block is built of aluminum construction for weight and robustness however, due to the tendency of aluminum distorting

under high stress, the cylinder liners are cast.

With a power output of 132 PS in its naturally aspirated form on Toyota products, the Elise S 2ZR engine required a high

boost pressure of 0.8 bar in order to reach 220 PS power output. Consequently, it develops much more torque all the way

through the rev range when compared to its predecessor (250 Nm as opposed to 210 Nm on outgoing Elise SC).

Using a similar system to the 2ZZ, the Double OverHead Camshaft (DOHC) allows for two distinct camshafts to operate

within the cylinder head, one operates the intake valves and the other, the exhaust valves (4 valves per cylinder, 16 in total).

This system allows for better valve placement which assists with the CO2 emissions, fuel consumption and power output as

there is better control over intake fluid flow.

Elise S MY12 – The New Magnuson R900 SuperchargerA compact package offering performance and efficiency

What is it?

A supercharger is a positive displacement pump. Its purpose is to increase air pressure (0.8 bar boost) and density in the

intake manifold. It does this by pumping more air than the engine would use without a supercharger. The supercharger is

matched to the engine by its displacement and belt ratio, and can provide excess airflow at any engine speed. This

concentrated charge of air provided by the supercharger results in a more powerful combustion stroke in the engine's

cylinders, resulting in improved performance over non-supercharged vehicles.

The Magnuson combined Supercharger/Intercooler/Manifold assembly is a compact unit minimising additional weight.

It takes the same space as the 1ZR-FAE intake manifold as used on the Elise 1.6. Furthermore, using the latest

generation of Eaton TVS rotors, the compressor is more efficient and quieter than the old generation.

What are the benefits of the Magnuson R900 supercharger?

1) Patented technology to reduce noise Increased driving comfort

2) Packaging flexibility Lighter and reduced package

3) Self-contained lubrication No external oil connections to the engine

4) Bypass system used for unloading supercharger

during idle and light load Better fuel economy and quiet operation

5) No particular maintenance, just checking the

wear of the drive belt Retains the same service intervals as previous Elise SC
