DESCRIPTION
‘Drawn from History’ presents the work of American artist Elise Ansel, who has taken some of our most familiar Old Masters and iconic paintings and used them as inspiration for her own works or ‘translations’. For this exhibition her first solo show in London, she fittingly took her inspiration from paintings based solely in London collections.TRANSCRIPT

‘Drawn from History’ presents the work of American artist Elise Ansel, who having explored the collections of London has taken some of our
most familiar Old Masters and iconic paintings and used them as in-
spiration for her own works or ‘translations’.

“There is a depth and resonance
to the masterpieces from which I
work. Transposing them affords
me the opportunity to see them
more clearly and understand
them more deeply. This exhibi-
tion at Cadogan Contemporary
has given me the opportunity to
focus on the many remarkable
paintings that are in London
collections.”

The artist’s interpretations of works by
Masters such as Titian, Rubens and
Manet create an exhibition showcasing
vibrant, alluring oils together with deli-
cate, intimate watercolour studies and
preparatory drawings.

Ansel’s proficiency in both palette
and form allows her to render illus-
trious narratives into shapes and
colours, laden with suggestive
brushstrokes; a method inspired by
Cézanne.

“The work of Frank Auerbach has always
been a great source of inspiration for
me. I saw a catalogue of an exhibition
he had at the National Gallery in 1995,
entitled ‘Working After the Masters’. This,
in conjunction with seeing Gerhard Rich-
ter's series of abstract paintings based
on Titian's Annunciation in the church of
San Salvador in Venice, made me real-
ise that translations of Old Master Works
could be the subject of serious contem-
porary painting.”
