Part VII – Research Activities Keywords Brief Description Observational Cosmology

Elia Battistelli is an experimental cosmologist working on the study of the Cosmic Microwave Background radiation (CMB) and its fine structures. In his work Elia develops radio-frequency, microwave and millimetric/sub-millimetric instrumentation for CMB observations and data analysis. The main interests of his research are the study of the interaction of CMB photons with the hot electron gas in Clusters of Galaxies, the Sunyaev Zel'dovich (SZ) effect, the polarization of the CMB including the traces that can be possibly found in there from the stochastic gravitational waves background generated from the Inflationary expansion of the Universe when it was ~10-35 s old, as well as the spectral distortions in the CMB frequency spectrum. Also, Elia is interested in the study of the Anomalous Microwave Emission whose origin still lacks of detailed explanation.

• Rome: November 2018-present (Associate Professor) Elia Battistelli is carrying on research in Experimental and observational cosmology and astrophysics in the Experimental Cosmology Laboratory at Sapienza University of Roma, Physics department. The main activity is the development and exploitation of millimetric and submillimetric instrumentation for cosmological studies. Elia is leading detectors development and calibration based on superconductor detectors such as Kinetic Inductance Detectors and Transition Edge Sensors for millmetric astronomy and CMB studies. Also, he is coordinating observations with Large (100m class) telescopes including the Sardinia Radio Telescope and the Green Bank Telescope to investigate the origin of the Anomalous Microwave Emission and the evidence of Baryonic Dark Matter within the filamentary structures in systems of Galaxy clusters. Among the projects Elia is involved in, it is worth mentioning QUBIC, LSPE, OLIMPO, COSMO. In the QUBIC collaboration Elia Battistelli is part of the steering committee, and chair of the editorial board. In LSPE Elia is Co'I and chair of the Editorial Board. Among Elia’s scientific interests, he is coordinating a project of observations of Anomalous Microwave Emission with large 50-100 m class telescopes toward galactic and extragalactic regions with the Sardinia Radio Telescope and another one for the search of Baryonic Dark matter with the Green Bank Telescope, both granted with the highest priority by the TAC.

• Rome: January 2008-November 2018 (post-doc/researcher) Elia has coordinated the front-end and cold electronics of the LSPE CMB-polarization ballone borne experiment and has been responsible for the design, development, setup and calibration of the low frequency arrays of the CMB/SZ effect balloone borne experiment OLIMPO employing. In 2010 Elia has coordinated the Antarctic observations of the CMB-polarization experiment BRAIN-pathfinder during the XXV PNRA Antarctic campaign and in 2015 has coordinated the COSMO campaign during the XXXI Antarctic Campaign. He has contributed to the design of the space born mission SAGACE, PRISM, Athena mission, CoRE. Elia is working on the design of the bolometric interferometer QUBIC to be installed on Argentinian Andes.

• Vancouver: November 2005-December 2007 (post-doc) At the University of British Columbia, Elia Battistelli has been working in the Experimental Cosmology Laboratory led by Prof. Mark Halpern on the development and calibration of low noise analogue/digital electronics for large arrays of TES and SQUID amplifiers employing Time Domain Multiplexing. He has played the lead role in commissioning TES control and readout electronics for the Atacama Cosmology Telescope, ACT, BICEP2, SPIDER and ClOVER and on the development of the algorithms and codes for the SQUIDs and TES tuning during observations. ACT experiment is a 6-m telescope dedicated to ~1 arcmin-level observations of the CMB, working at 5200 m a.s.l. in the Atacama desert. Elia is collaborating to the characterization of the detectors and to the construction of the telescope of ACT. Among other results, ACT experiment produced new high-angular-resolution, high-sensitivity CMB maps, Temperature Power spectra, new Galaxy clusters catalogues and new cosmological parameters determination, as well as the first determination of the Kinematic SZ effect. During his stay in Vancouver Elia Battistelli has belonged to the international collaborations for the development of SCUBA2, ACT, ClOVER, CCAT, SPIDER, Keck-Array, BICEPII and participated to sub-mm surveys.

• Tenerife: January 2004 - October 2005 (post-doc) At the "Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias", Elia Battistelli has been working on CMB data-analysis and instrumentation development in the CMB group led by Dr. Rafael Rebolo. One of the main activity was the study of a Super Cluster of Galaxies through the Anglo-Spanish Very Small Array (VSA) experiment and the disentangling of primary and secondary (i.e. SZ) CMB anisotropies through measurements, performed with MITO experiment. A weak emission of diffuse SZ effect has been observed in a region with no known Galaxy Clusters. This is of extreme interest for the scientific community and represents (although with a low S/N), the first direct evidence on the presence of barionic dark matter within a supercluster of galaxies. Experimental and data analysis work has been carried out on the COSMOSOMAS experiment whose primary goal is to map the sky from 10 to 17GHz with 1° resolution to extract cosmological and astronomical information from CMBR and foreground emissions. A direct evidence of anomalous emission in the Perseus molecular complex has been observed by COSMOSOMAS, which can be explained with the emission of grains in rapid rotation. This region has been observed and studied through its polarization emission and for the first time a weak polarization of an anomalous emitting region has been observed.

• Rome: September 2001-August 2003 (PhD) At the University of Rome, Elia Battistelli has been working in the Experimental Cosmology lab led by Prof. Francesco Melchiorri on developing instrumentation for the MITO telescope (Millimeter and Infrared Testagrigia Observatory). Elia Battistelli developed instrumentations and analysed data of SZ effect (receivers: FotoMITO and MAD-4-MITO). An innovative method to determine the absolute CMB temperature T(z) at Galaxy cluster has been proposed and applied on various Cluster of Galaxies. The joint analysis of SZ effect measurements performed at MITO telescope and of the X-ray data obtained from ROSAT satellite on Coma cluster of Galaxies has also allowed to perform a determination of the Hubble constant.

• Milan: February 2000-August 2001 (PhD) At University of Milan he has been working in the Radio Astronomy group led by Prof. Giorgio Sironi on the construction of a low noise heterodyne receiver with mixer based on Superconductor-Insulator-Superconductor (SIS) junctions: MASTER (Millimeter And Submillimeter Triple hEterodine Receiver). Also, a 33GHz correlation polarimeter has been developed for CMB polarization observations at angular scales of 7° and 14°. In addition, a triple antenna radiometer working at 600MHz, 820MHz and 2.5GHz from Campo Imperatore, has allowed to perform measurements of the CMB temperature at those frequencies.

• Rome: July 1998-January 2000 (MASTER degree) As final graduation project Elia Battistelli has been working at the University of Rome "La Sapienza" on the analysis of the CMBR spectrum distortions studying the COBE-FIRAS experiment calibration. The performed analysis has determined new upper limits on the distortion parameters characterizing the CMBR frequency spectrum and the matter-radiation interactions before the decoupling at z=1100.

• Technological skills During his career Elia had the possibility to develop skills in several technological and informatics aspects: • EXPERIMENTS: Elia Battistelli has participated to the design and the development of the following astronomical experiment: MASTER, MITOPol, FotoMITO, Milano Polarimeter, MAD-4-MITO, MITO, TRIS, VSA, COSMOSOMAS, B-MACHINE, SCUBA2, ACT, ClOVER, SPIDER, SPUD/Keck Array, BICEPII, CCAT, OLIMPO, SAGACE, BRAIN, QUBIC, LSPE, CoRE, PRISM, CALDER, COSMO; • INSTRUMENTATION: design and use of cryogenic coherent receivers (ex. heterodyne system with SIS junction mixers), thermal receivers (eg composite, spider web bolometers or TES with SQUID amplifiers) and Kinetic Inductance Detectors (KID); • ASTRONOMY: Elia Battistelli has been working and using several kind of astronomical instrumentation including: Parks Telescope (receivers MARS, Ku, K); Sardinia Radio Telescope (receivers C-band, K-band); CSO (receiver: shark); MITO (receviers: FotoMITO, FotoPola); OLIMPO; BRAIN; Atacama Cosmology Telescope. • LABORATORY: use of laboratory instrumentation used in the characterization and calibration of astronomical receivers working in the frequency range from radio frequencies to millimetric/sub-millimetric and far-infrared frequencies (lock-in amplifiers, spectrum analysers, oscilloscopes, network analyser, multimeters, optic fiber testers...); • INTERFEROMETRY: use and design of interferometric systems working at far-infrared and mm/sub-mm wavelengths (i.e. Michaelson, Martin-Puplett, lamellar grating...); • CRYOGENICS: use and design of liquid nitrogen, liquid helium with helium 3 fridges cryostats. Use of mechanical Cryocoolers pulse tube; • VACUUM: rotative, diffusive and turbomolecular pumps as well as mass spectrometer leak detectors; • optics and polarization in the radio and mm/sub-mm spectral range for the utilization, design and construction of different experiments and the use of mm/sub-mm telescopes;
