ELEMENTS OF ART Line Line is a 2dimensional mark on a surface. It can create texture and can be thick and thin. Shape Shapes are 2dimensional and made from lines with no form or thickness. Shapes are flat and can be grouped into two categories: geometric or organic/freeform Value Value is the degree of light and dark. It is the contrast between black and white and all the tones between. It can be used with color as well as black and white. Color Color refers to specific hues on the color wheel. Categories include: Complementary, Analogous, Cool, Warm, Primary, Secondary, and Intermediate/Tertiary Texture Texture is about surface quality either tactile or visual. It is the degree of roughness or smoothness in objects. Form Form is 3dimensional objects having volume and thickness. It can also be the illusion of being 3dimensional using light and shading techniques Space Area around an object (called negative space) or the area of the object (called positive space) PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN Emphasis Emphasis is something that stands out and is usually the focal point that draws your attention. Balance Balance is arranging the elements so that no one part of the artwork overpowers, or seems heavier than any other part. Types of balance are symmetrical, asymmetrical, and radial. Contrast Two things that are very different contrast each other. Pattern Repetition of specific lines, shapes, colors, etc in an organized way over and over again. Movement Movement shows action. It also refers to how a viewer’s eyes travel around a piece of artwork. Rhythm Consistency of certain elements in a piece of artwork that repeat. Unity Unity is the feeling that everything in the work of art works together and looks like it fits.

ELEMENTS  OF  ART  Line

Line  is  a  2-‐dimensional  mark  on  a  surface.  It  can  create  texture  and  can  be  thick  and  thin.

Shape   Shapes  are  2-‐dimensional  and  made  from  lines  with  no  form  or  thickness.  Shapes  are  flat  and  can  be  grouped  into  two  categories:  geometric  or  organic/freeform

Value

Value  is  the  degree  of  light  and  dark.  It  is  the  contrast  between  black  and  white  and  all  the  tones  between.  It  can  be  used  with  color  as  well  as  black  and  white.

Color

Color  refers  to  specific  hues  on  the  color  wheel.  Categories  include:  Complementary,  Analogous,  Cool,  Warm,  Primary,  Secondary,  and  Intermediate/Tertiary

Texture

Texture  is  about  surface  quality  either  tactile  or  visual.  It  is  the  degree  of  roughness  or  smoothness  in  objects.

Form   Form  is  3-‐dimensional  objects  having  volume  and  thickness.  It  can  also  be  the  illusion  of  being  3-‐dimensional  using  light  and  shading  techniques

Space

Area  around  an  object  (called  negative  space)  or  the  area  of  the  object  (called  positive  space)

PRINCIPLES  OF  DESIGN  Emphasis

Emphasis  is  something  that  stands  out  and  is  usually  the  focal  point  that  draws  your  attention.

Balance

Balance  is  arranging  the  elements  so  that  no  one  part  of  the  artwork  overpowers,  or  seems  heavier  than  any  other  part.  Types  of  balance  are  symmetrical,  asymmetrical,  and  radial.

Contrast

Two  things  that  are  very  different  contrast  each  other.

Pattern

Repetition  of  specific  lines,  shapes,  colors,  etc  in  an  organized  way  over  and  over  again.

Movement

Movement  shows  action.  It  also  refers  to  how  a  viewer’s  eyes  travel  around  a  piece  of  artwork.

Rhythm

Consistency  of  certain  elements  in  a  piece  of  artwork  that  repeat.

Unity

Unity  is  the  feeling  that  everything  in  the  work  of  art  works  together  and  looks  like  it  fits.
