TURN AND TALK WITH A FRIEND
What are the ELEMENTS of a story?
What is your favorite part of a story?
What does fiction mean? Non fiction?
![Page 3: Elements of a Story (Character, Setting, Problem and Solution)](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022042718/56813390550346895d9a9ca5/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
ELEMENTS OF A STORY A wonderful story has many ELEMENTS (can anyone
tell me what this word means? Write answers on board)
Elements of a story include: Beginning, middle and end Characters Setting Problem Solution
![Page 4: Elements of a Story (Character, Setting, Problem and Solution)](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022042718/56813390550346895d9a9ca5/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
ELEMENTS OF A STORY Can anyone tell me what a Character is?
Can anyone tell me where is the setting, what does that mean?
Can anyone tell me what a problem is? How about solution?
![Page 5: Elements of a Story (Character, Setting, Problem and Solution)](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022042718/56813390550346895d9a9ca5/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
ACTIVITY 1(DAY 1) Read to students “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” by Eric
Carle. Keep in mind the colors, and drawings you see!
Have students work on their tables. They need to draw and write who the characters are, where the setting is, what the problem and solution is. Each group is assigned one story element.
They need to draw a picture with their one sentence description.
Have students glue on their works of art to class board.

WHO AM I?
Can anyone tell me what book this man is holding?
Who do you think he is?
Why is he important?
![Page 7: Elements of a Story (Character, Setting, Problem and Solution)](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022042718/56813390550346895d9a9ca5/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)

THE VERY HUNGRY CATERPILLAR
What do you notice about the colors of these pictures?
What types of colors do you see? Are they one color or mixed?
Solid vs mixed
Are there a lot of colors or just a few?
Does Eric Carle color the pictures one color, and how does he color each picture?
![Page 11: Elements of a Story (Character, Setting, Problem and Solution)](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022042718/56813390550346895d9a9ca5/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)

Using mixed media materials, students will create the life cycle of the butterfly. Using the text clues from the story, students will use beans, dried pasta, leaves, and crayons to create a life model of cycle.
Assessment- Students will then write a short description for each stage of cycle. Differentiation- students will write a one sentence describing each stage copied from the board. Other students will write 2 sentences and the rest need to write 3 or more sentences. Sentences will include colors they’ve used, the stage of the life cycle
