DESCRIPTION

Popular culture represents a widespread set of beliefs and practices which permeates every layer of modern society. This paper aims to seek for the elements of popular culture and present the importance of their role in the plot of a literary work which does not belong to the field of popular literature, John Fante’s novel Dreams from Bunker Hill. The paper starts with an attempt at defining the notion of popular culture as close as possible and determining a theoretical framework. The analysis of the novel follows, with a particular emphasis on two of the most significant elements of popular culture in this book, Hollywood film industry and professional wrestling. The text observes a specific relationship between the main protagonist of the novel, Arturo Bandini, and these aspects of popular culture, on his way toward fulfilling his dream of becoming a famous writer. The paper ends with a conclusion that more attention should be paid to the study of elements of popular culture in “high” literature at the academic level.
