MCPS Core Strategies Focus Areas
FULLY IMPLEMENT MCPS Curriculum 2.0 in all areas, ensuring alignment with the Maryland College and Career Ready Standards (Common Core State Standards) and the Next Generation Science Standards.
INCREASE OPPORTUNITIES for project-based and problem-based learning throughout the district to build creative problem solving skills and social emotional competencies in all MCPS students.
Kindergarten● Weather● Life Cycles of plants and
animals.● External Features● Adaptations
1st Grade• Living Things• Movement & Motion• Electricity• Properties of materials• Environment
2nd Grade• Earth Materials• Classification of objects• Celestial Objects• Plant & Animal Survival• Life Cycles
3rd Grade• Force & Motion• Conservation of Matter• Heat & Energy• Basic Needs of Living Things• Flow of Matter & Energy
4th Grade• Diversity of Plants & Animals• Survival & Reproduction in
Ecosystems• Weather• Properties of Matter• Rocks and Minerals
5th Grade• Force & Motion• Electricity• Wave Energy & Light• Astronomy• Cells & Heredity
How Will Science Education Change with NGSS? Science education will involve less:
• Rote memorization of facts and terminology • Learning of ideas disconnected from questions about
phenomena • Teacher providing information to the whole class• Teacher posing questions with only one right answer• Worksheets• Oversimplification of activities for students who are
perceived to be “less able” to do science and engineering
How Will Science Education Change with NGSS? Science education will involve more:
• Systems thinking and modeling to explain phenomena and to give a context for the ideas to be learned
• Students conducting investigations, solving problems, and engaging in discussions with teacher guidance
• Students discussing open-ended questions that focus on the strength of the evidence used to generate claims
How Will Science Education Change with NGSS? Science education will involve more:
• Students reading multiple sources and developing summaries of information
• Student writing of journals, reports, posters, and media presentations that offer explanations and arguments
• Provision of supports so that all students can engage in sophisticated science and engineering practices
Kindergarten - 2019-2020● Weather● Life Cycles of plants and
animals.● Basic needs of plants and
animals
1st Grade - 2019-2020• Living Things• Force & Motion• Properties of materials• Environmental studies
2nd Grade - 2018-2019
• Energy transfer• Astronomy - patterns• Habitats and interactions
3rd Grade - 2018-2019• Force & Motion• Geology - Earth history• Evolution - Biohistory • Environmental change
4th Grade - 2017-2018• Energy, forces, and
interactions• Environmental systems• Ecosystems• Conservation of Matter
5th Grade - 2017-2018
• Conservation of matter• Energy waves and
transfer• Astronomy• Heredity
Students will be able to plan and conduct Well-Designed Investigations to determine the conditions needed to best support plant growth and development.Students will be able to use attributes of plants and patterns of plant growth and development (how young plants are similar to and different from adult plants) to determine the success of their investigations and overall success of the edible garden
Students will be able to design a tool to observe and measure evidence of the impact of weathering/erosion on the local environment.
