Elementary Enrichment and Intervention
Barrington Public Schools January 2014
Quality Classroom Instruction for Every Child
robust, standards-aligned curricula
• evidenced-based instructional practices
• universal screening of basic academic skills
• grade level teaming to analyze data, set targets for
improvement, adjust instruction and make
intervention/enrichment decisions
Differentiation is Responsive Teaching
“Teachers proactively plan varied approaches to what
students need to learn, how they will learn it, and/or how
they will show what they have learned in order to
increase the likelihood that each student will learn as
much as he or she can, as efficiently as possible.”
(Tomlinson, 2003)
DI Across the District Student Learning Differences Teachers use assessment information to gain clear
understanding of instructional level of each student
Instructional Groupings Flexible grouping and regrouping according to
instructional needs
Materials/Resources multiple levels and varied text, digital resources,
concrete materials, etc.
Learning Assignments Teachers differentiate learning experiences based on
where students are in their learning to increase
motivation and maximize success
Assessment Teaching teams use both formative and summative
assessment to guide instruction to meet the varied
levels of all students in the class
Differentiation at the Classroom Level
DI In Classroom Practice - Ladder of Understanding
• Math Workshop Modelo models are based on the progression ....concrete → visual →abstract

Students are coached through explicit
instruction of efficient math strategies
such as bundling into “10s”, finding
the basic fact, using a benchmark
number , turning a hard fact to a ten
fact and more...

HMS Students Say...“Having the extra help means a lot to me because it
makes me a better reader. It makes me want to read harder books to challenge myself. It also makes me more fluent.”
“It helped me understand words and I can read without getting stuck on words.
I am sort of ready to read harder
books.”
HMS Teachers Say● “The RTI Team has been an effective way to problem solve student needs
through an independent viewpoint.” Gr. 5 Teacher
● “Response to Intervention at HMS can be compared to a moving target. When children are identified as having a gap, they are frequently reviewed with progress monitoring data and teachers diagnose the best resources to meet the foundational gap. Then that’s when it becomes a moving target. The child is continuously monitored and the data continues to move. Action is taken to meet the needs of the child academically or behaviorally. It is always with our greatest hope that the data shows the target moving toward the positive. If not, the tighter the reigns get so we can meet the needs of the child.” Gr. 4 Teacher
HMS Parents Say...
“I think every child has their own unique ‘tools’ within them that helps them learn and grow. For some, those tools are hidden and hard to find. Her teacher has helped her find her tools and is teaching her how to use them to become the best she can be! What more could a parent ask for? When a child is happy and confident, they surely are in the best position to achieve success!”
Having the opportunity to get support means so much to us and means our daughter will have greater success in her school work all the way around.”
