1956: IBM unveils the 350 Disk Storage Unit, the first random-access (direct-access) hard disk.
1973: IBM releases the 3340, the first Winchester hard disk with a capacity of 70 megabytes (MB)
spread over four disk platters.
1985: The first CD-ROM drives make their debut on personal computers.
1998: The DVD-ROM drive debuts with 5.2 gigabytes (GB) of rewritable capacity on a double-sided
cartridge—enough to hold a two-hour movie.
2001: Constellation 3D Inc. introduces a new type of optical disc storage called FMD-ROM, which
holds up to 140 GB of data.
2003: USB flash drives (also called keychain drives because they are about the size of a key fob) hit
the consumer market.
2006: Sony introduces Blu-ray disc technology that makes use of the shorter blue-violet wave
lengths in the light spectrum allowing for up to 50 GB on a single disc.
2008: Solid-state drives (SSD) using flash memory that does not employ any moving mechanical
components became available to consumers.
