LHCb (Jørgen Christiansen)

Major request from LHCb is to find modular power supply system “a la Wiener PL500” which can be qualified to work in cavern: Total dose below 10krad over 10

years. Neutrons below 2.6x1012 1Mev

neutrons/cm2 over 10 years Hadrons with an energy above 20Mev

below 6.4x1011 hadrons/cm2

Magnetic field below 200 Gauss (further shielding may be possible)

Wiener PL500 - tests Radiation tests (ATLAS/ESS)

SEE tests in Louvain and PSI Power modules successful up to 1011 p/cm2

Rectifier module tests failed in Louvain due to a bad opto-coupler.

Tests at PSI OK after change of opto-coupler Tests in TCC2 at CERN

Unit failed due to problems in the MCU board

~0.6krad Modified MCU still faulty at PSI tests with

modified board

Wiener PL500 - tests Magnetic Field Tests Wiener have performed some

tests on shielding efficiency for sensitive components Supposed to work up to 1000 Gauss

Waiting for a prototype for testing

Wiener PL500 - proposed mods

ESS – B.Allongue

1. The microprocessor control to be removed from the output voltage control loop

• At the moment, the input data for DAC and PWM controller comes from the microprocessor

All protection, OVP, OCP should be achieved by means of a voltage reference and not by the microprocessor

Threshold could be set by a resistive divider according to the user specification

Wiener PL500 - proposed mods

2. Control - MCU should• Set on/off• Trim output voltage in specified

range• Within a defined range• Use the DAC, but with a hardware lock

• Monitor

3. Interlock• Crate should have interlock IN/OUT

connected straight to the DCDC PWM by-passing the MCU

• MCU to read the status only

Wiener PL500 – proposed mods

4. MCU power recycling in case of SEE RESET is not sufficient. In this case it is possible to “have access” to

the supply in any case of MCU problems and keep the electronics running by HWLOCK

Output voltage constrained to remain within safe limits OVP & OCP is still functional independently of MCU

In case of "soft" SEE, the MCU would not be destroyed The connection would be lost only for few seconds

because of power cycling
