Orientation Week

During this week we learned the basic procedures for class this semester and parking policies.

We also went into depth over HIPPA which is patient confidentially. This is a HUGE deal and probably the most important thing we covered.

A nurse from the OR came to speak to us about procedure while shadowing there.

Along with all this we were given maps of the hospital and received a tour.

Rotation Blogs

“The lab was a very confusing place. While the techs tried to explain the machines and reagents I didn't understand a whole lot. The first day I followed a phlebotomist and watched her draw blood from a baby and a lady about to deliver. The second day I got to hang out at the blood bank and really liked it. It was cool learning about the different blood types and such. I also got to see a cell go through mitosis which is very rare and an awesome experience! It was a pretty sweet rotation.”

“I only went to radiology for one day due to a school event but my rotation was pretty cool. They always had stuff going on so I was never sitting there with nothing to do. I saw a lot of X rays and I saw them put Barium down a women's throat to see how well she could swallow so that was interesting. I also saw a procedure that involved the spine. I was shown x-rays of bad breaks and that was interesting. Even though I'm not interested in radiology I didn't mind spending time there.”

Rotation Blogs

“I loved the MICU, it was always interesting and the nurses there were very nice. My mentor taught me a lot about the patient's medical conditions and many of them were ODs and attempted suicide. One guy was being watched by the police because of an attempted homicide. It was a pretty crazy unit. I saw one patient who was two years older than me that had tried to commit suicide and was being sent to Good Shepherd. I even got to see a psychiatrist. All in all it was a pretty educational rotation.”

“General surgery was pretty much a nursing station like Cardiac. There wasn't very many patients and I many just saw nurses filling out chart work. It seemed like no one there really like their jobs and just wanted to get out of there. Some of the nurses were pretty sassy which kept me entertained. I didn't learn a whole lot because like I said there was barely any patients. I was able to talk to a man with a tumor in his throat. He was on a feeding tube because he could not swallow. He had a lot of spirit though! It also seemed like a lot of the patients there had been there previously or would come back.”

“I visited the CICU last week and it was alright. Not a lot happened besides someone passing away. The only thing I really got to do was help roll a patient out front because she was being released. The nurses there were super friendly and I learned a few facts about diabetes. They also gave advice about different careers in the medical field and were extremely helpful! Loved the people in this unit.”

Final Reflection

I learned so much while going on rotations in Health Academy. Not only did I learn the basic language used in hospitals but it also helped shape my interest in the medical field.

Listening to lectures in class also helped shape my interest in different fields and helped narrow down my choices for a career in the future.

Health Academy was a great experience and I would reccomend it to anyone who asks! :D

Future Plans

I plan to major in psychology at Pitt State University and will also be applying to the Honors College there along with joining a sorority.

After graduation I hope to apply at KU Med School in Wichita.
