China suppliers of LiFePO4 batteries are boosting production and pursuing R&D actively to strengthen the line and broaden the application base further. The segment currently accounts for less than 10 percent of the countrys total output of Li-ion batteries, which reached $13.9 billion from January to September 2012. Manufacturers are, however, eyeing a more than 20 percent yield increase in coming months in preparation for a demand uptick. Chinas annual capacity for this sector is projected to hit 3.9 billion Ah by 2015 from 2 billion Ah in 2010. Already, some enterprises are mapping out their expansion plans. Zhongyu Lithium-ion Battery Co. Ltd, for instance, hopes to start operations in its new factory this 1H13. The project will raise the suppliers capability as much as five times. Zhejiang Godsend

Power Technology Co. Ltd will add 10 production lines in the next five years to triple or quadruple current yearly capacity. As for R&D initiatives, makers leverage the products environment-friendly features and enhanced performance. Suppliers such as Zhejiang Godsend plan to release ultrahigh-power varieties suitable for automotive starting batteries. The products feature an elevated discharge rate of 30C and can work in -40 C. They can achieve a discharge capacity of more than 60 percent under -30 C. To improve the chemistry further, makers are turning to finer-grade materials. Moreover, many companies are looking at nanocrystallization as a means to address the diffusion issue in LiFePO4.continued on page 204

Taiwan Bluetooth makers target growing application baseSuppliers of Bluetooth modules and antennas in Taiwan will boost penetration of the portable PC and mobile phone segments. They are capitalizing on the adoption of the low-energy 4.0 specification by the iPad and the iPhone. The devices are expected to provide the catalyst for the greater use of the technology in other mobile electronics. To ensure this and add value, companies offer integrated solutions, pairing Bluetooth with Wi-Fi or including GPS as a 3-in-1 option, besides stand-alone variants. Makers are also exploring new applications, highlighting the 4.0 standards sensing feature to enhance

functionality beyond peripherals and audio applications. They are eyeing the medical and healthcare market with the goal of increasing share in this segment against competing technologies WLAN, cellular, RFID and ZigBee. Companies also emphasizecontinued on page 15

China Watch Makers expand TFT-LCD, LED backlight optical film productionUpstream suppliers in Chinas LCD industry are bolstering manufacturing capacity for optical film to meet the requirement of the growing local market and boost efforts toward self-sufficiency. The products include polarizers and LED backlight optical film. The last is classified further into normal and multifunction prism sheets, and microlens, reflective polarizer, diffuser and reflector film. Beijing Kangde Xin Composite Material Co. Ltd has invested $700 million to build an industrial complex for TFT-LCD optical film production in Zhangjiagang in Jiangsu province. Expected to commence operations in 2Q13, the facility will be able to churn out 200 million sqm every year. In 1Q12, the maker opened its pilot project, which can process up to 40 million sqm annually. China Lucy has allotted $8 million to set up eight to 10 production lines between 2011 and 2015 to augment the existing four units. Once the facilities are completed, the companys optical film yield will hit 74 million sqm a year. CCS is on the second phase of its expansion, which entails the construction of 19 lines. Its current annual capacity is 14 million sqm. When all 25 lines are running, the company can handle up to 74.4 million sqm of TFT-LCD optical film. The aggregate expenditure for the undertaking is $55 million. T he industr y target s a total capacity of about 400 million sqm in 2014 from the current 140 million sqm. By category, it is 51.8 million sqm for polarizers, with output estimated at 46.6 million sqm or 40 percent of domestic demand. In LED backlightuse products, the equivalent figures are 349 million sqm, 279 million sqm and nearly 96 percent. In 2011, Chinas yield for these two types reached 900,000sqm and 70 million sqm, respectively. This translates to 2 and 54 percent only of the countrys need. The upward projections are based on the development of Chinas LCD panel sector, which will keep its momentum in coming years. By 2014, annual capacity will climb to 60 million sqm. This was at 25 to 30 million sqm in end-2011, recording 68 percent CAGR from 2008. By the 2011 level, the country already represented 15 percent of the global total.

At present, local panel makers source the materials from major providers in Japan, the US and South Korea such as Toray, 3M and LG Chem. TFT-LCD optical film is a key input in the manufacture of LCD panels and LED backlights, accounting for about 23 percent of aggregate costs.

Jiangsu wire & cable suppliers strengthen lineAfter achieving a record increase in export value despite economic challenges, makers of wires and cables in Kunshan, Jiangsu province step up R&D activities and enhance manufacturing efficiency further. They aim to sustain or exceed the previous periods 20 percent rise in the months ahead. S u p p l i e r s su c h a s Ku n s h a n Hwatek Wires & Cable Co. Ltd will be developing more products for use in high-frequency communication and 3G networks. With its 15-engineer design team, the enterprise will also be turning out models for computers and peripherals, and industrial setups. For the last, it has lined up low-smoke and halogen-free cables for release in the next one or two years. Kunshan Hwateks recent launches comprise USB 3.0 cable assemblies in response to the demand uptick from enabled devices. The maker owns nine patents. Kunshan Communication Electric Wires & Cables Co. Ltd has introduced indoor f lexible cables that are comparable in quality with imported counterparts. The supplier also has several models in its catalog, which were listed as National Key New Products by the State Economic and Trade Commission in the past decade. The GY33/GYA33 double wire-armored cables and GYFV/GYFVY metal-free optical kinds are among them. Under ef for ts to improve o p e r at i o ns a n d re d u ce co s t s , many companies in Kunshan have installed fully automated production lines. Their facilities include wire extruding, -winding and -braiding, and sleeving machines, mostly from local providers. For testing equipment, some use advanced units from overseas to ensure a consistently high quality of output. Kunshan Communication employs such devices from the US, Germany and Japan. T h e s ele c tio ns o f Kunshan based businesses generally pass international approval such as CE, EuP, RoHS, WEEE and UL. Kunshan Hwateks products meet CCC, CE, cUL, UL and RoHS requirements. Fifty to 100 wire and cable makers congregate in Kunshan, with the majority posting annual sales of $760,000 to $1.5 million each and large businesses $15.4 million. Most of the companies send more than 50 percent of yield abroad, mainly to the US, Australia, Italy, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan. Export shipments consist of a variety of communication, IT, A/V and medical equipment wires, cables

Suppliers are confident of a steadily recovering global market from the slump in 2009, which slashed Kunshans overseas revenue by 20 percent and resulted in shutdowns and mergers. T h e y a re a ls o co u nt i n g o n stabilizing material costs, which represent 70 to 80 percent of overall

production expenditure. At present, companies are tr ying to absorb any increases to strengthen price competitiveness. Jiangsu is a major exporting hub in China, contributing 20 to 30 percent to the countrys total revenue for the category. China is the largest production base for the line, generating over half of the worlds aggregate sales.

China Watch Hope for moderate growth in 2013 outweighs decline fearsAfter a challenging 2H12, China makers are split over 2013 growth prospects. Buoyed by the recent uptick in overseas demand, roughly half of the 1,546 exporters surveyed by Global Sources said they expect 2013 export revenue to exceed 2012 earnings. For many of these suppliers, the increase will be between 10 and 20 percent, although some foresee up to 30 percent jump. Optimism is lower than a similar survey a year ago when nearly all respondents were certain of export grow th . Comp are d with 2H12 projections, meanwhile, the outlook for 2013 is more positive as fewer makers said they expect outbound revenue to drop. For the past few months, Chinas export value has been climbing steadily YoY, with September figures rising at the fastest pace in three months. October numbers showed further growth, posting a five-month high of 11.6 percent. Nevertheless, many respondents are wary of these recent figures. They share the sentiments of some industry insiders that the export rebound could be due to a weak year-earlier month and one-off orders for Christmas. Further, global demand is expected to remain anemic in coming months, prompting 36 percent of surveyed suppliers to peg 2013 export revenue at 2012 levels. Among companies anticipating a slowdown, meanwhile, 44 percent estimated the decrease will not exceed 20 percent. More than a quarter said revenue will fall minimally at no more than 10 percent, suggesting makers are staying positive despite challenges. Costs remain the biggest export hurdle. Companies are forced to raise quotes, consequently losing their price advantage, to keep margins intact amid rising material and labor outlay. ABS and PP, which are used in many consumer products, and electronic and telecom accessories, have gone up about 1 and 12 percent YoY to $1,900 and $1,410 per ton. As for worker wages, rates are still relatively low but climbing rapidly. Security device supplier Shenzhen Fortunemount Technology Co. Ltd said makers can put a premium price tag only on devices with core technology. The rest is fair game. Backed by aggressive R&D, Shenzhen Fortunemount is projecting a more than 20 percent jump in export revenue in 2013. Propping up business Slow orders from the EU and the US also continue to hamper expansion, but the two will stay on top of the shipping list. Deliveries to South America will grow steadily. Suppliers have identified it as their primary destination among emerging markets. For Fuzhou Reeyah Lighting Co. Ltd, South America has held more promise for growth than the EU and the US in recent years. The supplier of CFLs, LED lamps and ballasts is projecting 10 to 20 percent higher revenue. Other coping strategies look at improving efficiency to help lower costs, further emphasis on upscale models that command higher prices, and a move to profitable product categories. Many surveyed companies will also venture into domestic sales amid high-level calls for such. Dealings within the China market, however, will not displace exports as the primary revenue generator. Most of the more than 1,500 respondents to this survey came from Chinas electronics, telecom and computer products industries. With increasing adoption, the technology will be the major growth driver in Taiwans WPAN segment. The latter will represent nearly 27 percent of the production value of

the islands wireless communications industry in 2013, according to the Market Intelligence and Consulting Institute. This translates to about $1.2 billion, an increase from the 25 percent share equivalent to $1.1 billion in 2012, and 20 percent and $737 million the previous year. Although the boost will not secure the lead for WPAN and by extension Bluetooth, it constitutes the largest YoY increase in the category, outperforming WLAN and WiMAX. In coming years, WPANs annual growth rate is projected to hit 20 percent, surpassing other technologies in the islands communications sector. Globally, Taiwan is Bluetooths second largest member base with 854 registered suppliers.

Dynamic PC trends spur components sectorsTaiwan suppliers of motherboards and related components follow closely the developments in the computer industry. They aim to sustain the gains that have positioned the island as a key source for the first category globally. From 78.9 percent of shipments worldwide, makers are looking to a 79.3 percent share in the months ahead based on the Market Intelligence & Consulting Institutes projections. To keep up with trends, motherboard companies leverage strong manufacturing capability to handle SMT, DIP, assembly, QC, and packaging processes in-house, and offer EMS from the design stage. Suppliers of materials and components, meanwhile, boast reliability in the quality of PCBs, solder paste, ICs, capacitors and resistors. At present, makers of motherboards are concentrating efforts on propping up the desktop category, which has been shrinking as demand has shifted to types for laptops and tablet PCs. They are taking a two-pronged approach, with one focused on penetrating new applications and the other on boosting the manufacture of high-end models. The first objective targets boards for cloud computing and the Internet of Things, which are considered the potential markets for industrial PCs in the next 10 years. Companies are moving x86 types toward telecom and data storage systems. They turn out units for servers running mainly on Intel Xeon processors, while eyeing Arms entry into the field. T h e e m p h a sis o n t h e h i g h end, meanwhile, aims to meet the requirements of the gaming and PC upgrade markets. The latest motherboard releases from Taiwan are compatible with the Intel Ivy Bridge platform and AMD FM2 sockets. These adopt the Z77 chipset from the first provider or AMDs A85. By CPU connector type, units with LGA 775 and 1155, and Socket AM3 lead shipment volume. In display interfaces, VGA, HDMI 1.3 and 1.4 and DisplayPort 1.2 constitute the major types, while Thunderbolt is a promising one. In I/O, there are USB 2.0 and 3.0, in addition to 3 and 6Gbps SATA and eSATA. There is also native support for PCI Express 3.0, thanks to Ivy Bridges adoption. The mainstream choices for networking are Gigabit and 10 Gigabit Ethernet respectively for PC and server boards. streaming and remote and motion control functions, and supports iOS and Android. This enables tablet PCs and smartphones to work as offsite keyboards or second monitors. In terms of memory, high-end gaming PC motherboards will integrate DDR4 memory modules after 2013. These will also feature multiple GPUs. By form factor, the trend will be for compact and space-saving units such as the Mini-ATX and the Thin Mini-ATX. At present, the key form factors are full and mini tower, ATX and microATX. Pico-ITX motherboards are also part of the selection in Taiwan. Taiwan companies have shifted the production of PC-use motherboards to mainland China, retaining only those for industrial computers in the island. The latter cover POS, digital signage, gaming and gambling system applications. Most output for industrial PCs consists of custom models.
