Nature of Work

Accountants help to ensure firms are run

efficiently, public records are kept

accurately, and taxes are paid proper ly and

on time.

Specific job duties vary widely among the

four major fields of accounting and auditing.

Training and Qualifications

for an Accountant

§Most accountants and auditors need at least a

bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related field

§

Many accountants choose to obtain certification tohelp advance their careers, such as becoming a

Certified Public Accountant (CPA)

§Accounting degrees require 4 years of college for a

bachelor degree and a extra year for a master

degree to become a CPA



Employment

§Accountants and auditors held about 1.3 million jobs in

2008

§Twenty-four percent of accountants and auditors

worked for accounting, tax preparation, bookkeeping,and payroll service firms

§Around eight percent were self-employed

§Some accountants are full-time college and university

faculty



Job Outlook

§Accountants are expected to experiencemuch faster than average employment

growth from 2008-2018

§Accountants who have a professional

certification, especially CPA’s, should have

the best prospects

§An increased need for accountants and

auditors also will grow from greater

emphasis on accountability, transparency,

and controls in reporting



Salary for an Accountant

§Top ten percent earns more than $102,380

per year

§The middle half earns between $45,900

and $78,210 per year

§

Bottom ten percent earns less than$36,720 per year

• Accounting is a diverse career choice.

There are many jobs one can pursue

with an accounting degree.

• Accounting offers one the ability to

make as much money as they desire

by providing advanced opportunities.

• The job outlook for accounting is

positive with the growth within this

field being much faster than average.
