• TerahertzElectronicandPhotonicIntegratedTechnology:Leadtheconvergenceofelectronicsandphotonics(100GHzto20THz),bridgingthegapbetweenmillimeter-wavelengths(<300GHz)andinfrared(>20THz)bycreatingintegratedsystemscapableofenablingarangeofapplications,suchaswirelesslinkswith>100GB/sdatarates,medicalimagingatTHzfrequencies,andmulti-pixelreceiversfornextgenerationradioastronomyobservations.

• Large-ScaleNetworksofUltra-Low-PowerDevices:Designlargenetworksofdeviceswithextremelylowpowerrequirements,suitableforcooperativelysensingandinteractingwiththeirenvironment,withinnovationsinlow-powercircuitsandsystems,wirelesscommunicationsandnetworking,signalandimageprocessing,andapplicationstomedicaltechnologies,energyefficiency,andsmartcities.

• Post-CMOSNanocomputing:Exploredevices,circuits,andarchitecturesthatprovideincreasedcomputationalcapabilitiesbeyondthelimitsofmodernCMOSbybuildingonsignificanton-groundsstrengthsinspintronicsand

nanomagnetics,molecularelectronics,solarcells,2Dmaterials,andnanoscaleheatmanagement.

• Multi-ScaleMedicalImaging:WorkwithresearchersandcliniciansintheUVaMedicalSchooltocreatethenextgenerationoflow-cost,highly-accurateimagingofcellularandmolecularstructuresinpatientsbyprovidingnewimagingtechnologies,includingnovelelectronics,devices,andimageprocessingmethods.

• NeuralEngineering:WorkwithneuroscienceresearchersacrossUVatobuildahumanneurome(1012neurons)–whichwillinvolveprocessingandanalyzingmorethan1018pixels–withinnovationsinimageprocessing,informationtheory,andcomputation.

Office.Graduatestudentsonprobationareusuallyineligibleforfinancialaid.AgraduatestudentwillbesubjecttodismissalifthecumulativeGPAisnotraisedto3.0withinonesemester.UndergraduatecoursesandcoursestakenonaPass/NoCreditbasismaynotbeusedtomeetrequirementsforagraduatedegreeandwillnotbeusedincomputingtheGPA.TimeLimitforDegreesThetimelimitforcompletionoftheM.S.isfiveyearsafteradmission.ThetimelimitfortheM.E.issevenyears,andthePh.D.issevenyearsafteradmissionintothePh.D.program.TransferofCreditMasterofScienceandPh.D.candidatesmaytransferamaximumof6creditsofapprovedgraduatecoursesintotheprogram.MasterofEngineeringcandidatesmaytransfer12hoursofgraduatecredit.StudentsmayonlytransfercourseswithagradeofBorbetter.StudentsintheCommonwealthGraduateEngineeringProgram(CGEP)mayincludeupto15hoursofcreditwithgradesofCorbetterfromparticipatinginstitutions(anoverallGPAof3.0musthavebeenmaintainedattheparticipatinginstitution).Studentsshoulddiscusscoursesacceptablefortransferofcreditwiththeiradvisor;thetransfercreditformcanbefoundontheSEASwebsite.Thisformisrequiredfortransferringcoursesalongwithacatalogstatementofcourselevelandthegradingsystemthatjustifiesclassificationofthesecoursesasgraduate-levelcourses.Anofficialcopyofthetranscriptfromtheinstitutionwherethecourse(s)wastakenisrequired.PhDcandidateswhohavecompletedaMaster’sdegreemayapplythatdegreetowardtherequirementsofthePhD.Upto24gradedcreditscanbeapplied,basedonreviewofthetranscriptbytheEEGraduateDirector.GraduateCourseDropDeadlineThelastdatefordroppingagraduatecourseisdeterminedbytheRegistrar’sOffice.Checktheacademiccalendarforthecurrentlistofdeadlines.(Whendeadlinesaremissed,studentsmaypetitiontheDean'sOfficeforaWorWPuponconcurrenceoftheirinstructorandadvisor).IncompleteGradesandRepeatedCoursesA10-dayperiodpasttheendofthesemester(endoftheexaminationperiod)isautomaticallyallowedtoremoveanincomplete.Maximumextensiontotheendofthefollowingsemester(e.g.,followingFallforaSpringclass)maybegrantedbyspecialrequesttotheDean'sOffice.IfacourseisrepeatedbothgradesareusedintheGPAcalculation.

ArticulationRequirementsGraduatelevelelectricalandcomputerengineeringresearchisabroaddisciplinethatutilizesskillsfrommanydiversefields.StudentsenteringthegraduateECEprogramfromanon‑electricalbackgroundarewelcomewithintheUVAECEdepartment.Allstudentsshouldhavecompletedundergraduatecourseworkinatleastthreeofthefollowingelectricalandcomputerengineeringundergraduatetopicareas.Thisbackgroundcapabilityisrequiredbythefacultyto1)exhibitsufficientcoreknowledgeassociatedwithgraduate-degreeelectricalengineers,and2)toprovideadequatepreparationforgraduateclassesandresearch.CircuitAnalysis LogicDesignLinearSystems CommunicationTheoryElectronics SignalProcessingControlTheory ElectronicMaterialsOptoelectronics ComputerArchitectureDevicePhysics ElectromagneticsPower SoftwareEngineeringQuantumPhysics EngineeringMathematicsTheserequirementsmaybesatisfiedinthefollowingways:•Relevantundergraduatecoursework-Forexample,aphysicscourseinelectromagneticfields.•SuccessfulcompletionofanappropriateUVAundergraduatecourse(Borbettergrade).•Independentstudyandexamination.StudentsmaytakeaproficiencyexaminationandpasswithaBorbetterinanappropriateUVAundergraduatecourseduringthenormallyscheduledexaminationperiod,orbyspecialarrangementwiththeinstructor.

ResponsibilitiesofGraduateStudentsAsagraduatestudentintheUniversityofVirginiayouhavebeengivenauniqueopportunityforintellectualgrowthinavibrantacademiccommunity.Thisopportunitycomeswithsomeresponsibilitiesonyourpartasastudent,researcher,andteacher.AcademicProgressTheresponsibilityforyouracademicprogressislargelyyourown.Youmustensurethatyouarecompletingthenecessarydocumentationasyouprogressthroughtheprogram.TheEEGraduateProgramDirectorwillbeabletogiveyougeneral

guidanceinmeetingtheacademicregulationsoftheinstitution,SEAS,andthedepartment.Yourownacademicadvisorwillassistyouinpreparingaplanofstudythatfitswiththegraduate-levelcourses.ResearchAssistantsTheawardofaGraduateResearchAssistantship(GRA)andthestipendandtuitionfeeremissionassociatedwithitispaidoutofresearch-groupfunds.AGRAisnotagranttothestudentbutispaymentforstudentcontributionstotheresearchprogram.GRAfundsareawardedtotheresearchgroupforthecompletionofaprojectofresearch,theresultsofwhichwillbereportedbacktothefundingorganization.IfyoureceiveaGRA,thenyouareessentiallyanemployeeworkingonthatparticularproject.Yourresponsibilityistocompletetheassignedprojecttaskswhilemaintainingyourownacademicprogress.ItispossiblethatyourGRAfundingwillcomefromaresearchprojectotherthantheonewithwhichyourresearchworkisconnected.Inthiscase,itisstillyourresponsibilitytomaintainacademicprogressinbothresearchandcoursework.TeachingAssistantsTheawardofaGraduateTeachingAssistantship(GTA)andthestipendandtuitionfeeremissionassociatedwithitispaidbyinstitutionalfunds.Asateachingassistant,agraduatestudentcarriesconsiderableresponsibilityasarepresentativeoftheUniversityinthelaboratoryandtheclassroom.TobeappointedtoaGTAposition,aninternationalgraduatestudentmusthavepassedtheSPEAKTestorcompletedtheappropriatefollow-upcoursework.ThistestisadministeredbytheCenterforAmericanEnglishLanguageandCultureaspartoftheInternationalTeachingAssistantTestingandTrainingProgram.ThisprogramscorestheverbalcommunicationskillsofprospectiveGTAsandoffersfurthertrainingasneeded.ThistestisinadditiontotheTOEFL(requiredforadmission)andtheUVELPE(UniversityofVirginiaEnglishLanguageProficiencyExam)requiredofallinternationalgraduatestudents.AsaGTA,yourprimaryresponsibilityistothecourseinstructor.OnceselectedforaGTApositionyoushouldcontacttheinstructorandclarifythedutiesexpectedofyou.AsaGTAlaboratoryassistant,yourmostimportanttaskistobecomefamiliarwiththeexperiments.Thisinvolvesdiscussingthemwiththeinstructor,readingthelaboratorymanual,andperformingtheexperimentsbeforethescheduleddayofthelaboratoryclass.Youshouldexpectamplesupportfromthefacultysupervisorfortheclass,soaskformorehelpifit’snotadequate.ScholarshipAsagraduatestudent,ahighlevelofscholarshipisexpected.YouarerequiredtomaintainaBaverage(cumulative)inyourcoursework.Youwillbeengagedina
