This comprehensive and accessible text teaches the fundamentals of digital communication via a top-down-reversed approach, specifi cally formulated for a one-semester course. It offers students a smooth and exciting journey through the three sub-layers of the physical layer and is the result of many years of teaching digital communication.
The unique approach begins with the decision problem faced by the receiver of the fi rst sub-layer (the decoder), hence cutting straight to the heart of digital communication, and enabling students to learn quickly, intuitively, and with minimal background knowledge.
A swift and elegant extension to the second sub-layer leaves students with an understanding of how a receiver works. Signal design is addressed in a seamless sequence of steps, and fi nally the third sub-layer emerges as a refi nement that decreases implementation costs and increases fl exibility.
The focus is on system-level design, with connections to physical reality, hardware constraints, engineering practice, and applications made throughout. Numerous worked examples, homework problems, and MATLAB simulation exercises make this text a solid basis for students to specialize in the fi eld of digital communication and it is suitable for both traditional and fl ipped classroom teaching.
Bixio Rimoldi is a Professor at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland, where he developed an introductory course on digital communication. BIXIO RIMOLDI
A TOP-DOWN APPROACH
“…an excellent introductory book on digital communications theory… for advanced undergraduate students and/or fi rst-year graduate students, or alternatively for self-study. It achieves a nice degree of rigor in a clear, gentle and student-friendly manner. The exercises alone are worth the price of the book.”
Dave Forney, MIT
“…this extremely well structured text is an excellent book for a fi rst course on Digital Communications. It covers exactly what is needed and it does so in a simple and rigorous manner…”
Shlomo Shamai, Technion, Israel Institute of Technology
“…perfect for a beginning mezzanine-level course in digital communications. The logi-cal three layer - discrete-time, continuous-time, passband - approach to the problem of communication system design greatly enhances understanding. Numerous examples, problems, and MATLAB exercises make the book both student and instructor friendly.”

This book is intended for a graduate-level course on distributed generation
or a companion for researchers and practitioners in the field. It contains all of the requisite
background, technology, and theoretical concepts related with distributed generation systems
with an orientation towards power electronics. It is organized into three components: an
overview of the motivation and benefits, presentation of enabling technologies, and a discussion
of integration and operation. These topics are presented with a practical perspective and with an
analytical approach different from those used for traditional power grids that is better suited for
the study of microgrids.
Alexis Kwasinski, Associate Professor, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Pittsburgh
Bixio RimoldiAuthor of Principles of Digital Communications
The decision to write this book came naturally after years of writing and
rewriting lecture notes, trying to figure out the “right” content for a
one-semester course and the “right” way to teach it. At some point I
thought that I had it all figured out and that it would be a small step from
there to a thin book that contains what is needed and nothing more. Good thing
that I was so naïve. Now I can say that the time and effort were worth it. I hope that
instructors and students think so too.

Mathematical Foundations of Infinite-Dimensional Statistical ModelsEvarist GinéUniversity of Connecticut
and Richard NicklUniversity of Cambridge
High-dimensional and nonparametric statistical models are ubiquitous in modern data science. This book develops a mathematically coherent and objective approach to statistical inference in such models, with a focus on function estimation problems arising from random samples (density estimation) or from Gaussian regression/signal in white noise problems.
‘Finally – a book that goes all the way in the mathematics of nonparametric statistics. It is reasonably self-contained, despite its depth and breadth, including accessible overviews of the necessary analysis and approximation theory.’Aad van der Vaart, Leiden University

Optimization ModelsGiuseppe C. CalafiorePolitecnico di Torino
and Laurent El GhaouiUniversity of California, Berkeley
This accessible textbook demonstrates how to recognize, simplify, model and solve optimization problems – and apply these principles to new projects.
‘In Optimization Models, Calafiore and El Ghaoui have created a beautiful and very much needed on-ramp to the world of modern mathematical optimization and its wide range of applications. They lead an undergraduate, with not much more than basic calculus behind her, from the basics of linear algebra all the way to modern optimization-based machine learning, image processing, control, and finance, to name just a few applications. Until now, these methods and topics were accessible only to graduate students in a few fields, and the few undergraduates who brave the daunting prerequisites. The book’s seamless integration of mathematics and applications, and its focus on modeling practical problems and algorithmic solution methods, will be very appealing to a wide audience.’Stephen Boyd, Stanford University, California

The Cambridge Dictionary of Probability and its ApplicationsDavid StirzakerSt John’s College, Oxford
Probability comes of age with this, the first dictionary of probability and its applications in English, which supplies a guide to the concepts and vocabulary of this rapidly expanding field. Besides the basic theory of probability and random processes, applications covered include financial and insurance mathematics, operations research (including queueing, reliability, and inventories), decision and game theory, optimization, time series, networks, and communication theory, as well as classic problems and paradoxes. The dictionary is reliable, stable, concise, and cohesive. Each entry provides a rigorous definition, a sketch of the context, and a reference pointing the reader to the wider literature. Judicious use of figures makes complex concepts easier to follow without oversimplifying. As the only dictionary on the market, this will be a guiding reference for all those working in, or learning, probability together with its applications.
