CANDIDATE STATEMENTMy interest in serving on OSPE’s Board of Directors stems from efforts to continue raising awareness of OSPE and Ontario engineers at the government, public, and industry level and making contributions to the OSPE and engineering community by serving on number of committees, and being an outreach volunteer and mentor to many junior engineers. I also believe that engineering profession is very important to the economic and social well-being of society. It motivates me to advocate and volunteering in the engineering community and professional associations.

I will continue my initiatives and dedication to the engineering profession as I have made a measurable impact over the past 10 years as a passionate advocate for engineering profession, new engineering graduates, and internationally trained engineers. It is necessary to grow OSPE membership to grow the profession’s influence, and serving on OSPE’s Board of Directors will allow me to increase awareness of issues affecting engineers today. We need to be able to bring our concerns and contributions to the public’s attention, as well as connect with decision makers to influence change. Thank you and I look forward to serving with you.

CANDIDATE STATEMENTThe key issue for the engineering community in Ontario is its struggle for relevance. A key underlying problem is a history of Governments in Ontario showing disrespect to the engineering profession and Ontarians by choosing political expediency over evidence-based decision making. Reflective of the problem is the complete absence of engineering positions in the following technical based Ministries: Energy; Infrastructure; Research, Innovation and Science; Education; and Health and Long-Term Care. Even Ministries that do have Engineers are often not properly consulted on important technically based initiatives. Development of the Green Energy Act and the Climate Change Action Plan are examples. Also, despite ongoing protest from the engineering profession, the Government still officially and openly allows industries to do its engineering work without engineers. Is it any wonder that the impact of Government’s disrespect of the Engineering Profession contributes to only 31% of engineering graduates working as engineers?

OSPE has an important advocacy role to promote the public interest and the importance of the engineering profession to safeguard it. OSPE has done very well in this important task. It needs to build upon its many successes and strive to be even more innovative and impactful. I would like to be part of an active and effective OSPE leadership that strives through the promotion of engineering to make Ontario a world class leader in innovation, sustainable development and prosperity.

CANDIDATE STATEMENTI am honored to be nominated for a director position on the board. Over the years,I have stood up for engineers through being a strong advocate of sound public policy that will allow the engineering profession to become more innovative and dynamic. This commitment led me to run in the last federal election on a platform of progressive energy policies. I have forged connections within all levels of government and I have a strong appreciation of how to advocate effectively within the public sector to create positive change.

Over the past year, I have actively volunteered my time with OSPE. This has been shown through government lobbying efforts through the Political Action Network as well as through being a mentor to support women in engineering. I am excited about OSPEs expanded mandate to strive for a more open and inclusive society through the creation of the Equity Diversity & Inclusion committee. If elected, I would assist in realizing this initiative so that everyone within our profession feels as though they have a voice.

CANDIDATE STATEMENTInstead of feeling abandoned and left out, what if your voice was heard and you could watch as your profession evolves to meet your current needs?

Keep your eyes open, because that is exactly what is happening!

Now that Associate members are eligible to run for the board, I'm asking you to vote for me to the first associate member on the OSPE Board.

Seven years ago I blazed a trail at PEO, becoming the first student to sit on a PEO committee. Two years ago I pioneered the way for a Society of Women Engineers Affiliate in Toronto to form and meet the needs of women in the field here and now.

This brings me to OSPE. We have seen the organization evolve over the past few years, offering more professional development opportunities, career fairs and more. Now it's time for the next step, to engage recent engineering graduates and engineering interns more actively in the profession. It may be a cliché, but it’s true that we are the future of the profession and it's time to be involved and represented in the continued evolution of engineering. Only then can you benefit from the wealth of experience currently at the table.

Therefore my commitment to you, the members of OSPE, is two-fold:

1. Engage recent engineering graduates and engineering interns to be involved and know they belong

2. Bridge the gap between them and the senior leaders of our profession for effective knowledge transfer as we all work together to elevate the profession.

CANDIDATE STATEMENTMy name is Laura Yu and I am currently the Innovation Procurement Manager at Ontario Centres of Excellence, a not-for-profit organization supporting technolo-gy-based companies to scale and grow in Ontario for over 30 years. I bring with me more than 9 years of experience in the innovation and technology industry, including the translation of research into commercialization. My engineering career began as R&D engineer in the medical device before progressively moving toward business development to support startups and small medium enterprises (SMEs) grow in Ontario. I have managed over 230 successful industry-academic collaborative projects across multiple industry sectors and advised startups on their development activities and fundraising roadmaps. Recently, I work closely with the Ontario government to lead a $28.8M program that engages the private sector for their innovative technology solutions to address public sector challenges, which may lead to procurement opportunities. This puts me in a unique position to 1. engage with a variety of stakeholders including engineers, engineering students, industry, and government; 2. amplify the role and work of engineers in addressing global challenges and showcasing their impact on Ontario’s future growth and next generation of engineers; and 3. excel the profile of OSPE and its values to its members. In joining the OSPE Board of Directors, it is my desire to help advance and promote the engineering profession. Therefore, I like to ask for your support and the opportunity to serve our current and future members.

As the voice of the engineering community in Ontario, OSPE is engaging in the provincial election to ensure that engineers are heard in 2018.

It is OSPE's view that the next provincial election will play a major role in determining the future of engineering in Ontario. On issues of economic development, climate change, innovation, power systems, infrastructure investment, transit planning and more, Ontario forces challenges and enjoys opportunities - and engineers have solutions. But

the reality is, unless engineers are empowered to lead, their voice won't be heard.

WHY PLEDGE?

OSPE represents the entire engineering community, including professional engineers, engineering graduates and students who work or will work in several of the most strategic sectors of Ontario's economy, and predominantly in the emerging technology fields. So, as

Ontarians prepare to return to the ballot box this June, the engineering community cannot afford to stand on the sidelines - we must mobilize to show the province that engineering matters.

OSPE is the only engineering association in the province that is mandated to serve the needs of the entire engineering community, including professional engineers and all engineering graduates, interns and students. We are passionate about elevating the public profile of the engineering profession and providing the support that our members, including women and other under-represented

groups, need to not only succeed, but excel in their careers.

This campaign will get more engineers talking to amplify the voice of the profession in government policy, planning discussions, and in the media - promoting the employment and value of engineers in the province.
