Hi, my name is David Miller. Welcome to Course Design in PowerPoint. I designed this course to teach how a commonly used software application such as PowerPoint can be used to produce effective and engaging learning experiences. I hope that you will have a productive and rewarding experience taking the course. There are three parts to this course. Part 1 covers an introduction and overview of PowerPoint. Part 2 consists of lessons on developing course notes, slide text and creative instructional techniques. Part 3 discusses developing course activities and learner assessments.
The course topics are listed on the screen and as you can see they begin with an overview of PowerPoint to cover the basics of this application. These are the skills and knowledge that you are expected to acquire at the completion of this course. Although some of these objectives may be more important for your learning environment, we believe that exposure to the other information can be an overall benefit.Now let us begin with Lesson 1 A Quick Overview of PowerPoint. This lesson covers setting up a presentation, formatting text, editing features and slide enhancements.The first step to creating a presentation is selecting the PowerPoint program. When you open it, it commonly begins with a blank slide. This is called the title slide.When selecting a slide design, you need to click Design to open the Design template. When it opens, then you can select a slide design.The formatting features that can be changed include fonts, size, and color. You can select the font that you would like from an extensive list of fonts. There also is an option to select a font size from a list. Lastly, you can select a font color from the list by clicking the A symbol. Once you have determined the font formatting, you can click to add the title of the presentation.Other formatting features include bullets, numbering, and bolding text. Click New Slide to open another slide. Then, you add a title for the new slide, and then click the Bullets button to add bullet points. You also can click on Numbers, to number the text. You now are able to type text next to the bullets and/or numbers. For new lines, you can press the Enter key. Then, select the text to be bolded, and then click the Bold button. Some useful slide enhancements offered by PowerPoint include creating text boxes. Click on the Insert menu, then select Text Box. Then you click the Line Color to draw a line around the box. Once you have the text box ready, then you click the Fill Color icon to color the box. The final step is to type text in the text box.
Other useful slide enhancement features are inserting clip art and pictures. First, you click on the Insert Clip Art icon, then click Graphic from the Clipart pane. Slide transition is another enhancement feature that allows users to select the way in which one slide or all slides in the presentation opens. First, click on Slide Show, then Slide Transition. You can now click on a transition of your choice. You also can change the speed of transition by clicking on the speed, underneath Modify transition.Editing features offered in PowerPoint include deleting and copying text. To delete text, you should select the text, and then press the Delete key. To delete a slide, click on the slide, and press the Delete key. To copy text, select the text and click the copy icon. Now, you should right-click where the copied text is to be placed. This is done by clicking Paste. You can then create a new text box to copy the text into.To save the presentation, click File, then Save As, and then type the name of the file and click Save.Now, that you have saved the document, the presentation can now be viewed by clicking on the Slide Show icon.
