Communist propaganda appears in many guises. I is transmitteduonghout the world in many ways. Perhaps the most insidious method usedtor its transmittal involves the use oi dupes.

Eleanor Roosevelt, in her syndicated newspaper column Ihich is 15read by millions, has been telling h.-r readers oi her travels in the SovietUnion. 01 Beptember 13, 1957, eIu- related the details of her visit to thecity oi Zagorsk. iihe described this "holy city, " she called it, andmentioned the "shrine, " the "monastery, " and the "two churches" there. She told oi the "continuous" religious service carried on there and madereference to the "unbelievably beautliul voices" of the "older women"chanting the service. ~ . -

Many will probably defend lire. Roosevelt's picture oi a "holy city" inthe Soviet Union byfeaplaining that things have changed since 8a1in's death. I so,they have only to read the latest Soviet publications which, recently, have beenlocueing attention on religious influences in that country. Typical of the commentsfound on this subject in various articles and editorials in the Soviet press are thefollowing: . -

". . . it is necessary tor antireligioue propaganda to stress the factthat all religion is umvzientitic. . . . "

Washington Daily News of April 16, 1953. Mr. Forrester stated "Mrs. Rooseveltsays that Congressman Francis E. Mr. J. Edgar HooverFederal Bureau of investigationWashington, D. C.

Dear Mr. Hoover:

Recently, du"ing a discussion with a group offriends we came into an 3.I'gvm6nt concerning Mrs, _Eleano_r

O_Qgga_ggl_t{s affiliations with a youth organizat.l'5i'i that was provedto m a communist front.

- I was taught in senior social studies this year thatshe, in patronizing it, was unaware that it was a communist front.

Some believed that she knowingly lhad her name oncommunist registers, a member of the communist party. Theysaid that the reason this fact is not out in the open is that hersupporters would instantly suppress it. "Y

' Not knowing '-where to find information on this subject,if any, I decided to write to you for he1p.' Would you please helpme with a fact or two concerning our problem?

Your book, A/tasters of Deceit, was worth everyminute I spent reading it. _

Thank you for your time.

He said he hasalready read the Director-'s book, "Mam.-rs of Deceit, " bit. intends to study it further.

'~

' The Congressman also : 'ated that he_ represents part oi the Los AngelesDistrict and there are about six or eight incorporated cities in his district. He saidthat many of the school principals and r-hieis oi police are vitally interested in theDirector's statements on communism, crime, and juvenile delinquency and that he wouldappreciate very much some literature that he could forward to them. He was advisedthat we would be very happy to supply him with such material. The Congressmanrequested from 25 to 30 copies of the i. aterinl uhich -had been leit witlfhim.
