Jewel Gamsby2 June 2015Eleanor RooseveltMy name is Eleanor Roosevelt, and I was born in 1884. I changed the role of the first lady through my active participation in politics. As the niece of Theodore Roosevelt, I grew up very wealthy. My mother and father were both dead by the time I was ten years old, so I was sent to school in England. Despite my duties as first lady and my six children, I became active in public service during WWI while I worked for the American Red Cross. When Franklin had his polio attack, I had to help Franklin with his political career. I often held press conferences and spoke out for human rights. I also worked for childrens causes and womens issues, and I worked on behalf of the League of Women Voters. In addition, I had my own newspaper column entitled, My Day. I really wanted to help the countrys poor, I stood against racial discrimination, and during WWII I travelled abroad to visit US troops. Since my active work happened before the Feminist Movement, I was heavily criticized by many. However, I was also praised and I am now known as a leader of womens and civil rights. I was one of the first public officials to publicize important issues through mass media. After Franklins death, I didnt plan on continuing my public service. However, I did serve as a delegate to the United Nations General Assembly. I became the chair of the UNs Human Rights Commision. I helped write the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In a piece of the preamble, I stated: Whereas recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world, Whereas disregard and contempt for human rights have resulted in barbarous acts which have outraged the conscience of mankind, and the advent of a world in which human beings shall enjoy freedom of speech and belief and freedom from fear and want has been proclaimed as the highest aspiration of the common peopleIn addition to my service as First Lady, I wrote many books, including: This is my Story, This I Remember, On my Own, and Autobiography. In 1961, the same year I released my autobiography, John F Kennedy appointed me a delegate to the United Nations and was appointed chair of the Commision on the Status of Women.
