Introduction

Gastat works on obtaining national statistical indicators in all fields to reach realistic indicators that reflect the

real situation to be adopted in improving policies and taking decisions and providing suitable services for people,

institutions, or various sectors. Therefore, GAStat is pleased to present this report concerning The Elderly Survey

(65+ years old) for 2017 AD.

GAStat, represented in its Department of Population and Vital Statistics, conducted such survey from 17th Rajab

to 22nd Shaaban 1438H (Corresponding to the dates April 14, 2017 to May 18, 2017). The survey covers a

sample of(33575) families to guarantee representation at the level of the Kingdom. This sample was based on

the results of the updated framework of the population and houses census for year 1431H (2010) (updated in

2016).

This report is primarily aiming at providing an integrated image of the reality of the elderly belonging specifically

to the age group 65+ years old in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Such population are surveyed by their

demographic and social characteristics, needed services, communication with the homes for the elderly, as well

as their role in voluntary work. The report also encompasses the methodology of the survey, collecting data and

analytic findings.

In this survey family data were collected including the marital and educational status. The data also included the

demographic structure of Saudi population (65+ years old) on the level of KSA and administrative regions. The

survey also extracted several indicators such as: age and gender structure for the age group (65+ years old),

marriage and divorce rates, educational status, diseases, difficulties in physical functions, voluntary work and

communication with the homes for the elderly. The authority hopes these results meet the needs of planners,

researchers and whoever is interested in the elderly studies.

GAStat also thanks all partners and clients from the authorities concerned with the elderly and the heads of

families included in the study. It is worth mentioning that their cooperation, after the guidance of Allah, had a

great impact on issuing such report. At the same time, it is hoped that everyone will provide us with proposals

via the e-mail ([email protected]). Such proposals will improve the content of this bulletin and further develop

future reports.

Definitions

First: Objectives of the Saudi Elderly Survey (65+ years old)

Providing data on the age and gender structure of the Saudi elderly.

Providing data on the marital and educational status of the Saudi elderly.

Providing data on the elderly by geographical distribution.

Providing data on the diseases and physical function difficulties from which the elderly suffer

Providing data on the voluntary work by the elderly

Providing demographic data and indicators of the elderly periodically for measuring the change in the

demographic characteristics with the passage of time, and for carrying out local, regional and

international comparisons

Second: Survey Sample

1. Sample Design:

The elderly survey is one of actual household surveys carried out by the General Authority for Statistics by

using the general population and housing census framework 1431H (2010), and the updated in 2016. To get

highly efficient and effective estimates, the survey society has been divided into non-overlapping parts,

characterized by relative homogeneity in their units. Each part is considered a category, and each category is

dealt with as an independent society. A random sample is independently drawn from each category. Finally, all

drawn sampling units are integrated to form the entire sample.

2. Survey Sample Design and Selection

Head for the sample designing and proper methodology selection:

The objectives of the Population Characteristics Survey 2017 for the age group (65+ years old) and the

sample of the previous survey (The Demographic Survey 2016) were studied and discussed to review the

results.

The Standard Deviation (SD) and Coefficient Of Variation (CV) of some main demographic

variables in the survey were analyzed.

In the light of that, the size of the survey sample has been estimated. The selected sample is a random

categorical cluster sample, selected through two stages, in accordance with the following:

First Stage

After determining the optimum size of the survey sample of households of each administrative region,

there begins the drawing of the Primary Sampling Units (PSU) from the main sample framework. A number of

1,300 statistical areas, out of 3,600 within the framework of the census was drawn. They were distributed over

all categories in every region using the method that is commensurate with the size and distributed as follows:

Second Phase

The secondary sampling units, i.e. households, were (SSU) were randomly drawn from the statistical

areas, which were chosen in the first phase using the regular random sample. Up to 25 households were chosen

from each statistical area, (totaling 33575) households that were picked in the following order:

3. Scope and range of the sample:

The Elderly Survey (65+ years old) sample includes the Saudi households living in the kingdom. It also

covers the Saudis who are temporarily living abroad for medication, study, tourism, etc who are counted as

members of the included households as long as they were picked up in the sample. The survey's sample covers

every region in the kingdom.

Third: Survey form:

The form, which is available in electronic format, is designed by a group of GAStat specialists who have

taken into consideration recommendations, world standards and requirements set by international and local

organizations. It introduces a list of questions divided into main sections as follows:

Fourth: Census data collection and time reference:

The survey was carried out in the period from 17/7/1438H.to 23/8/1438H. (Corresponding to the dates

14/4/2017 to June 18/5/2017). The form was filled during an interview held with head of the family. The

researchers who are deployed for field studies paid visits to the chosen households to collect the necessary data.

According to the time reference, the elderly survey form is divided into:

The main data collected should be linked to every member of the household taking into account

the household size and its key characteristics, for example: Age, sex, educational status, marital

status and the date on which the form was completed.

The employment status data are based on the week previous to the visit to the household.

Fifth: Definitions:

Administrative Region:

A part of Saudi Arabia run by a governmental agency affiliated to the Ministry of the Interior. In each

administrative region there is a city representing the region's headquarter. The kingdom is divided into 13

administrative regions.

Building:

A building is every structure; whether permanent or temporary, single- or multi-storey, with one or more

rooms, and has one or more doors through which to access it. A building might and might not be inhabited;

and it could be intended for housing, or for economic, social or religious purposes ... etc, or for housing and

work such as: Complex, residential building, palace, villa, house, government building, shop, mosque... etc,

taking into account the annexed buildings such as garage and stores. Villa annexes shall not be counted as

buildings. The same goes with the bridges and chambers of electricity supply, engines and water pumps.

Dwelling:

It is a single- or multi-room unit (in a building or part of building) which is primarily prepared for one

household and has one separate door or a number of doors, whether it was still under construction,

occupied or inhabited. The dwelling might accommodate one or more households, one or more businesses,

or a household and a business simultaneously. Every inhabited building shall be counted as a dwelling, even

if it was not set up for that purpose such as: Shops, workshops and schools ... etc, the types of residence

include villas, houses and apartments.

Household:

A person or a group of persons - with or without kinship binding them to one another - who share

residence during the enumeration. The household includes:

The Saudi individuals who are habitually residing with the same family but were not available for

temporarily traveling abroad when the study was underway. For example: Businessmen, tourists,

patients and students abroad for study.

Family members who were absent during the data collection process to attend shift nights. For

example: Physicians, nurses, fishermen, airport staff, guards .... etc.

servants, drivers and the like who are members of the same household.

Family members who are on a trip in the Kingdom.

Head of the Household:

It refers to the person regarded by the family members as its chief member. Usually, he is responsible for

taking decisions on family affairs and his age must not be under 15 years old. If the family consists of

children and their mother, and they are cared for by a relative who does not live with them, such a relative

shall not be considered head of the family, nor shall he be recorded as one of its members. In this case, the

mother shall be considered the head of the family.

Population:

It refers to all individuals, Saudi population, living in the Kingdom at the time of the survey.

Survey population:

They are the members of the household selected as a sample, who live in dwellings.

Age:

It is the time period calculated between date of birth and date of visit. It is presented in years, regardless of

months and days.

Nationality:

The individual's legal right of belonging to a particular country. It is usually defined by the passport the

person has the right to obtain.

The Elderly:

To serve the purposes of the survey, the elderly are defined as all individuals at the age of (65+ years old) .

Physical function difficulties:

Every individual who has a deficiency in any body function or structure, who cripples his ability to participate

due to environmental and personal factors. The term "difficulties" is adopted to reflect the limitation of the

functions or physical structure.

Anxiety and Depression: Anxiety is defined as a psychological state manifested in the form of a continuous trouble as a result of the individual's sense of being threatened. This threat may actually exist or may be fancied and not existing in reality, and its continuity is a sign of an illness that needs treatment. Depression may be defined as state of continuous sadness and grief that may last for two weeks or more and it is considered as an illness that needs treatment.

The Elderly Survey 1438H (2017) indicated that:

The number of the elderly (65+ years) is (1050885), i.e. (3,23 %) of the total population. Out of this

number (57,48%) were male and (42,52 %) were female.

The number of the Saudi elderly (65+ years) is (854281),i.e. (4,19 %) of the total Saudi population. Out

of this number (48.9 %) were male and (51,1%) were female.

2- Geographical distribution:

As for the age distribution of the elderly by sex and nationality in the Kingdom's 13 regions, the Survey

showed that:

The ratio of the Saudi elderly (65+ years) is (81,3 %) of the total population (65+ years). Out of this

ratio (40 %) were male and (41,9%) were female. The ratio of the elderly (65+ years) reaches the

ground in Northern Borders Region (1,07 %), but tops the list in Makkah (29,4 %).

The ratio of the Saudi elderly (65+ years) tops the list in Makkah (24,5 %), but reaches the ground

in Northern Borders Region (1,3 %).

Moreover, the ratio of the male Saudi elderly (65+ years) tops the list in Makkah (24,4 %), but

reaches the ground in Northern Borders Region (1,2 %) out of the total Saudi population (65+

years).

3- Population age structure:

The Survey showed that the ratio of the elderly (65+ years) by sex, age group and nationality is as follows:

The ratio of the elderly in the age group (65 – 69) among total population (65+ years) reached (39,4

%). The ratio of Saudis among them reached (74,9 %):(48,6% were male, 51,4% were female).

The ratio of the elderly in the age group (70 – 74) among total population (65+ years) reached (26,3

%). The ratio of Saudis among them reached (80,8 %):(49,4% were male, 50,6% were female).

The ratio of the elderly in the age group (75 – 79) among total population (65+ years) reached

(15,7%). The ratio of Saudis among them reached (87,5 %): (49,4% were male, 50,6% were

female).

The ratio of the elderly in the age group (80+) among total population (65+ years) reached (18,7%).

The ratio of Saudis among them reached (90,2 %): (48,3% were male, 51,7% were female).

4- Marital and educational status:

The results of the Survey by marital status show that:

The highest percentage is among married individuals (70 %) followed by widowed individuals (27 %).

The lowest percentage is among individuals who never married (1%) followed by divorced individuals

(2 %).

When comparing between male and female individuals among the Saudi elderly (65+ years),

marriage percentages are higher among men: (46% are men and 24% are women), while

widowhood percentages are higher among women: (25% are women and 2% are men).

In addition, the results of the Survey by educational status indicate that:

Out of the total Saudi population (65+ years) who never married, the ratio of individuals holding

(primary- intermediate- secondary) degrees is (14,35 %): 7,63% are male and 6,72 % are female.

Out of the total Saudi population (65+ years) who have married before (married- divorced- widowed),

the ratio of individuals holding (primary- intermediate- secondary) degrees is (19,62 %): 15,93 % are

male and 3,68 % are female.

In addition, and out of the total Saudi population (65+ years) who have married before, the ratio of

people who finished at least their under-graduate diploma is (6,74 %) : 6,07% are male and 0,67 %

are female.

5- Chronic diseases and treatment costs:

The results of the Saudi Elderly Survey (65+ years) by chronic diseases indicate that the highest percentages

are among individuals with diabetes (28,7%) and blood pressure diseases (28,5%), followed by those with

arthritis (13,9%). On the other hand, the lowest percentages are evident among individuals with fractures

(0,6 %) , depression (0,7 %) and Alzheimer (1,2 %). The Survey also shows that chronic disease

percentages are higher among female individuals: (43,2 % are male and 56,8% are female).

Moreover, the data of treatment costs borne by Saudi population (65+ years) show that (79,4 %) is the

percentage of those who benefited from the treatment services provided by the state, while (20,6 %) is that

of people who receive treatment at their own expense and who have medical insurance.

6- Daily needs:

The results of the Survey show that the daily assistance needed by Saudi population (65+ years) are distributed

according to the following order: mobility and movement (30,9 %), self-care (30,6 %), medicine taking (24,7

%), and finally eating and drinking (13,8 %).

As regards assistance in daily needs, the results are distributed in the following order: assistance by a family

member (86,5%), assistance by a nurse or private worker (10,2 %), and finally assistance by a friend or another

relative (3,3 %).

7- Community participation:

The results of the Saudi Elderly Survey (65+ years) by community participation indicate that:

The highest percentage of voluntary work is among male individuals (71,8 %) compared to that of

female volunteers (28,2 %).

The domains of voluntary work practiced by the Saudi elderly (65+ years) are distributed in the

following order: Religious domain (50,1 %), social domain (37,3 %), cultural domain (7,4 %), and

other domains (5,2 %).

In addition, the ratio of Saudi elderly (65+ years) who generally communicate with homes for the elderly is very

low at (0,2 %).

The reasons for not communicating with homes for the elderly are ordered as follows: the elderly mainly do not

need such communication (84,5 %), such homes are distant geographically from their own homes (11%), the

elderly find no use from such communication (3,4%), and finally they do not communicate with elderly homes

for other reasons (0,9%).

8- Services Provided by Ministry of Labor and Social Development:

The Survey shows that (78,5 %) of the Saudi population (65+ years) with difficulties in physical functions are

provided with services by the Ministry of Labor and Social Development. The types of most of such services are

distributed in the following order: Financial services (83,8 %), in-kind services (9,3 % ), other services (3,4 %),

domestic care ( 2,1 % ), day-care ( 1 % ), and finally shelter services ( 0,3 % ).

9- Physical function difficulties:

The results of the Survey indicate that the types of physical function difficulties among Saudi population (65+

years) are distributed in the following order: movement difficulties (70,50%: 38% are male and 62% are

female), sight difficulties (24,2 %: 63% are male and 37% are female), and finally hearing difficulties (5,3%:

66,7% are male and 33,3% are female).

As regards the results of physical function difficulties by severity degree, the highest percentage is among

persons with minor difficulties (73,6 %: 47,1% are male and 52,9% are female), followed by those with

severe and acute difficulties (26,4 %: 41,5% are male and 58,5% are female).

10- Anxiety and Depression:

In the context of suffering from anxiety and depression, the results of the Survey show that the percentage of

the Saudi population (65+ years) who suffer from anxiety and depression on a daily basis, out of the total Saudi

population (65+ years), is (1,22 %: 0,41 % are male and 0,81 % are female).
