der of World Wars. Present was Jack Knight, vice-president of

Equitable Equipment, who said Ferrie was introduced as a pilot in

the invasion who couldn't land in Cuba due to he avy ground fire .

Ferrie spoke emotionally about Kennedy's double cross of the

invasion force and his failure to a uthorize adequate air cover. He

got so rabid that several people including Knight walked out and

the mee ting was adjourned.

Oddly enough, a man who reportedly knew F errie and had been

questioned by Garrison's staff was murdered in Miami on the same

day Ferrie died, February 22.

Diego Gonzales Tendedera, a Cuban exile and the Miami corre

spondent for El Tiempo a Spanish-language paper in New York,

wrote a story after the mutilated body of Eladio del Valle wa s

found in a Miami parking lo t.

In his story he said that del Valle, ni cknamed Yito , was a man

he knew well and one who was known well in Miami's community

of Cuban exiles. He said t hat before Fidel Castro set up his Com·munist dictatorship, del Valle had been a Cuban Congressman and

a City Councilman in Havana. According to Tendedera, Del Valle

fled Cuba with most of his wealth before Castro took over. In Mi

ami, he set up a grocery store as a front for gathering freedom

fighters, procuring guns, grenades, bombs and sabotage equip

ment. Tendedera said that he frequently visited del Valle and that

h e met Ferrie in the stol'/· Du ring one six-month period, he said,

Ferrie and del Va lle were to gether every day. Tendedera sa id Fer

rie and del Valle flew over Cuba two or three times a week in delValle's twin-engine Apache to drop incendiaries and rescue anti

Communist Cuban s who wanted to escape. Tendedera said that

federal agents put a s top to th e raids in 1961 by confiscating hi s

plane.

Another story reported that the del Valles death publicly had

been written off as a gangland slaying, since he wa s believed by

investigators to be linked with a na rcotics syndicate, but sa id that

Garrison's men had located del Valle three days before his death

and talked to him about helping them.

More fuel for the mysteri ous deaths theory.

After Fer rie's death, developments in the Garrison story came

thick and fast. At an impromptu pr ess conference February 24,Garrison announced he had positive ly so lved th e assassination of

President John F. Kennedy" and would arrest every individual

involved- in thecourse of time.

going to get away from us is to kill themselves.

And then carne. the real jawbreaker for quizzical newsmen

chewing up th e DA's every word: The key to the to the whole case

is through the looking glass. Black is white; white is black. I don't

want to be cryptic , but that 's the way t s .

Th e DA did not explain his r iddle, and he has often publicly

quo ted Lewis Carroll, but though the looking glass is sometimesused among homosexuals to denote "t he gay world .

And finally t he most sensational Garrison quote up to that

point: I ha ve no re ason to believe that Lee Harvey Oswald killed

anybody in Da ll as on November 22, 1963." This seemed to-put Ga r

rison squarely in the camp of thosewho say more than one assassin (or would -be assassin) was at work on t hat Dallas parade route .

The quote wen t far beyond the previous assertions of a possible

New Orleans-based consp iracy to the President. The DA later ex

panded on th is thesis.

One of the interesti ng areas is th e story of how Garri son got

into the case in the first place. That he is in it at all seems at first a

bit absurd. I t wou ld appear fantastic that one lone DA cou ld dowh at the Warren Commission , with its immense prestige andre-

sources, did not, according to Ganison, do. ·

I t seems absurd to think that Garrison's sm all investigative

staff cou ld uneart h a plot overlooked by t he FBI and the Secret

Service, with their vast ne twor ks of intelligence sou rc es. And yet,

th is is t he first time anyone wit h any investigative authority ha s

tack led t he case si nce the Warren Commission closed its book.

I f on e h olds t he theo ry that the commission went into its inves

tigation with preconceived notions a nd time l imitat ions, re fusing

as some have char ged to hear any evidence to the contrary, th en

the idea of an independent probe - even by some one with t he lim
