beginning of the year.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to email me at [email protected]

or call me at 814-926-4688 ext. 2018.

April 1 (using paper/pencil or Word/Google Docs)

1. Pick an object in your house. Write one paragraph describing the object WITHOUT

telling the reader what the object is. Use description as your text structure. Use

adjectives and sensory details (taste, touch, smell, sound, and sight) to describe your

mystery object.

2. After writing your paragraph, underline all the adjectives in your writing piece.

3. Read your mystery description to at least one or two different people and have them

guess your object.

Adjective- a word that describes a noun or pronoun Example- rough, loud, sparkly

April 2 and 3 (using paper/pencil or Word/Google Docs)

1. Write a response paragraph to the following prompt.

Should students be required to do homework over the weekend?

Include the following in your response:

A. Claim statement

B. Three reasons to support your claim

C. Evidence/examples to support your reason

Page 2: ELA Activities for April 1 -April 9...ELA Activities for April 1st-April 9th These activities serve as review of 6th grade skills in reading/grammar/writing since the beginning of

Appositive- a group of words that describes a noun that directly follows the noun. An

appositive starts with a comma and ends with a comma- unless the appositive ends the

sentence.

Examples

My pet, a golden retriever, is the busiest dog ever!

We are volunteering at Willow Nest, a bird sanctuary hospital.

4. Read your finished response to person at your house. Do they agree with you or not?

Record that person’s responses.

April 5 (using paper/pencil or Word/Google Docs)

1. Find a picture in your house that includes at least two people. It can come from any

source (phone, magazine, newspaper.)

2. Write a dialogue of what you think the two people in your picture are saying to each

other. Use rules for writing dialogue.

3. Each person in the picture should say at least three direct sentences to the other

person.

Helpful Hints when using Dialogue:

1-Always indent when the speaker in the dialogue changes.

2-Use direct quotations around the words that the speaker is directly saying.

3-Punctuation marks always go inside the quotation marks.

4-Only use “said” once when writing your dialogue.

5-Be creative and humorous with what your subjects in your picture are saying.

Page 3: ELA Activities for April 1 -April 9...ELA Activities for April 1st-April 9th These activities serve as review of 6th grade skills in reading/grammar/writing since the beginning of

Example-

“Let’s go Eli. I want to get to the hot chocolate station before anybody else,” voiced

Bigfoot.

“I can’t keep up with you. You are walking too fast. Your leg length is three times as long

as mine,” pleaded Eli.

April 6 (using paper/pencil or Word/Google Docs)

1. Find an activity or task that you are very good at doing. Example-making your bed,

cleaning your room, stringing a guitar, changing a tire, organizing a party. It does not

have to be complex; it could be making a specific kind of food!

2. Using a sequence text structure, make a list of all the steps needed to perform the task.

3. Be sure to think of every step you need to do! Remember you know how to do this task

VERY WELL, but it might be new for someone else.

4. Include helpful hints to help someone else perform this task easier.

5. Get feedback from a parent/grandparent/older sibling in your house. Read it to them

aloud. Write down that person’s feedback to improve your steps.

April 7 (using paper/pencil or Word/Google Docs)

1. Using your feedback and list from your process/task example, write a central idea

statement that lets the reader know your task/activity and why it’s important.

Example Central Idea Statement: Chocolate chip cookie and brownie treats are not only a

delicious dessert but are an easy recipe to follow that will be a delight at any summer picnic.

2. Add transitions to your steps to show the sequence text structure.

3. Add a concluding sentence to this activity- don’t just restate your central idea

statement.

4. Make sure all steps are written in complete sentences and that you vary your sentence

structure.

5. Underline all the verbs (action, linking/being, helping) in this assignment.

Page 4: ELA Activities for April 1 -April 9...ELA Activities for April 1st-April 9th These activities serve as review of 6th grade skills in reading/grammar/writing since the beginning of

Action verb- a word that can be acted out as an action (jump, swim, laugh)

Linking/Being verb-a verb that acts as a state of being or links the subject to an adjective in

a sentence (is, are, was, were, am)

Helping verb-comes before a main verb and helps determine the tense of the verb phrase

I will hike tomorrow. (will is the helping verb; hike is the main verb)

Just for fun… read the directions to another person as they perform the task! Did your process

let him/her correctly perform your activity!?!

Task/Process Assignment- you can use this outline to produce your final product!

YOU ARE NOT WRITING A PARAGRAPH, JUST FINALIZING A COMPLETE LIST IN AN OUTLINE

FORMAT.

Central Idea Statement:

Steps to complete task (use transitions): the number of steps will vary

Examples-Next, in addition, also, as you start, in the beginning, as you continue, the next step,

finally, at the end,

1-

2-

3-

place for people to live? Provide three examples. Each example should include an explanation
