“Cyhyd ag y canwn ei ganeuon, cyhyd ag y bydd ei ddewrder yn ein hysbrydoli i fod yn ddewrach, fydd Victor Jara byth yn marw.” Meddai Pete Seeger, trwbadŵr proffwydol a fu farw’r llynedd.

Mae ein gŵyl yn Nyffryn Dyfi yn dod â phobl ynghyd o dan faner El Sueño Existe (Mae’r freuddwyd yn parhau) ac mae’n ddathliad o waith Victor Jara fel arwydd o’r

dyhead am fyd tecach a thosturiol.

Mae 42 mlynedd eleni ers chwyldro Chile pan gipiwyd a llofruddiwyd Victor. Mae swyddog o fyddin Chile oedd yn gyfrifol am ei lofruddiaeth i gael ei erlyn o’r diwedd yn Florida. Mae ein cofion yn mynd at ei weddw Joan a’i ferched Amanda a Manuela.

Mae’r ŵyl yn ceisio plethu tapestri

o gerddoriaeth, gwleidyddiaeth, barddoniaeth, drama a dawns ac fe fydden ni wrth ein boddau pe byddai pawb sy’n ymweld yn dod yn rhan o’r tapestri hwnnw. Thema’r ŵyl eleni ydy Eco Sosialaeth ac rydym yn gobeithio datblygu syniadau dros y penwythnos fydd yn gyfuniad o wleidyddiaeth werdd a sosialaeth flaengar. Dywedodd Vandana Shiva: “Mae hi’n bryd i ni sylweddoli bod hawliau dynoliaeth yn ddibynnol ar hawliau’r Fam Ddaear.”

Byddwn yn edrych ar y sefyllfa yng Ngholombia, gwlad sydd heb ddilyn esiampl gwledydd cyfagos a ble mae gormes yn parhau i fod yn gyffredin. Mi fyddwn yn dathlu diwylliant bywiog Colombia trwy gyfrwng can, dawns a barddoniaeth. Gobeithio cewch chi benwythnos wrth eich bodd ac y cewch eich ysbrydoli a’ch adfywio ar ôl eich ymweliad.

Welcome // Croeso“As long as we sing his songs; as long as his courage can inspire us to greater courage; Victor Jara will never die.” So wrote visionary American troubadour Pete Seeger, who passed away last year.

Our festival here in the Dyfi Valley brings people together under the banner of El Sueño Existe (The Dream Lives On) and is a celebration of the legacy of Victor Jara as a signpost towards a fairer and more compassionate world.

It is 42 years since the Chilean coup and the torture and death of Victor. At last, a former Chilean army officer is to stand trial in Florida in connection with his death. Our thoughts are with his widow Joan and his daughters Amanda and Manuela.

The festival seeks to weave a tapestry of music, politics, poetry, drama and dance, and we would love everyone who comes to be part of that tapestry. A theme of this year’s festival is Eco-Socialism and we hope to develop ideas over the weekend that bring a cross-fertilisation of green politics with progressive socialism.

Vandana Shiva said: “It is time to recognise that the rights of people rest on the rights of Mother Earth.”

We will also be looking closely at the situation in Colombia, a country sadly out of kilter with the developments in neighbouring countries and where repression remains commonplace. We will also be celebrating the vibrant culture of Colombia through song, dance and poetry.

We hope you have a wonderful few days and leave feeling inspired and rejuvenated.

Love and peace, Tony & the team: Claire, Cristina, Helen, John, Jorge, Lucy, Maggie, Marit, Mike, Mogs, Pete, Rosie, Sabrina, Tim

The well-known printmaker Ian Phillips designed our beautiful poster. Ian lives locally and has exhibited all over the UK. His linocuts of the Welsh landscape and coastal scenes in all weathers, often dotted with bird life, are highly distinctive. Ian has kindly made a limited edition of six original linocut prints of the ‘Blackbird’ design especially for the festival. We will put some on sale and raffle others in a Magic Numbers draw this weekend. As well as the bird singing atop a guitar, the design features the wording ‘A dream of a fairer society – the spirit of Victor Jara in Wales’, in both Welsh and English, etched into the shape of the hills around Machynlleth. (Unlike the posters, it is not over-printed with the festival details.) Pick your number at the Ticket Desk for the chance to take home one of these beautiful artworks; or enquire about purchase. Size: 470 x 500mm. Signed and unsigned A3 posters also on sale. Proceeds to festival.

Saturday daytimeThe main stage in the Marquee opens late morning with Colombian dance from Catufa, cultural warriors who perform the traditional dances of Tolima and the Andes.

Then Flakito, an accordionist from New Zealand, presents songs collected on his travels in Colombia; followed by an encore from Catufa.

The name of the next act, Kausary, means ‘to revive’ in Quechua, the native language of the Incas. They keep their tradition alive with music for the heart and the feet. Led by Johnny Rodriguez, they combine panpipes, salsa, rumba, cha-cha-cha and jazz.

Next we hear from Machynlleth’s own Gwilym Morus, whose distinctive bass voice combines the traditions of Welsh folk with African influences and his own songwriting. After a further colourful dance from Catufa, Corina Piatti, Argentinian songstress, presents Tango, Milonga and Latin American folk.

Then The Days of May perform Music in the Time of Revolution, composed by their keyboard player, Steve Tromans. Based around the work of political artists including Victor Jara, Allen Ginsberg and Albert Camus, the set opens with a Q&A with Tony Dudley-Evans.

Aberystwyth community choir Côr Gobaith close the afternoon around 5pm with their songs of protest and hope; and the family activities culminate in a wonderful Carnival Parade around the site.

Over in the Plas Hall a little earlier, Expresion Inka perform Yaku (Water / Agua), blending theatre and dance to tell how Tawantinsuyu (Latin America) is ravaged by big business. Pachamama (Mother Earth) needs our help. After a break for you to enjoy something to eat from our food stalls and a pint from the

SundayCloud Cuckoo, Machynlleth’s very own Latin band, aim to get everyone up and dancing on the Main Stage in the Marquee on Sunday morning.

They are followed by La China Veleidosa, a Chilean band based in London, dedicated to the traditional folk music of central Chile. They specialise in Cuecas, Tonadas and New Chilean Song. They look to the figure of the Cantora (female singer), embodied in the legacy of Violeta Parra and her research on rural culture.

Expresion Inka then take the stage to perform a traditional dance of the Inca people. They are followed by Silvia Balducci from Italy, playing songs from the Chilean New Song movement.

Over in the Plas Hall, Shale Lies is a ‘radio ballad’ style performance of music, poetry, songs and readings from the frontline against fracking in the ‘desolate’ north of England. Researched with activists, it features a new section for the festival, looking at gold mining in Latin America. The show connects the struggles to protect communities in the UK and worldwide against corporations, and is produced by the Threepenny Festival Association.

Back in the Marquee, we hear from Rompiendo Fronteras (‘Breaking Boundaries’), a collective of musicians from Chile, Bolivia and England. The four-strong group bring political passion and

ravishing harmonies to Latin American songs of protest and revolution. They give their own unique interpretation to music ranging from classics by Victor Jara and Violeta Parra to Andean celebrations of ‘Pachamama’ (Mother Earth) and Quechua – the language of the Incas. After their set, Expresion Inka perform again.

Next, we hear from Valentina & Voces del Sur, formed by Chilean singer Valentina Montoya Martínez and Scottish guitarist David Russell. Valentina, a historian by training, is also a songwriter with a passion for Latin American folk music and tango. Her aim is to disseminate folk traditions from her native Chile and Latin America and to tell the stories of her people through her own voice and songwriting. “A voice we should be grateful came north.” (Sunday Times)

They then make way for Catufa to perform for the last time from their wide repertoire which embraces slave dances, Amazonian warrior dances and the fandango. After the prize draw at 3pm for the ‘Blackbird’ prints, the stage closes with a Celebration.
