Al iniciar el torneo estatal 2016 de basquetbol para nios en Nebraska, el entrenador Bruce Chubick de Omaha South se encontraba en la misma posicin en la que se encontr Joe Maass, su contraparte en futbol soccer en Omaha South, hace unos cuantos aos.

Maass llev el anteriormente espantoso programa de futbol soccer a un puesto de elite. Pero sobre el alto ranking a nivel nacional, los diversos campeonatos de distrito y su participacin en las finales, lo nico que faltaba era un ttulo estatal. De manera similar Chubick logr generar un cambio considerable con el equipo de

basquetbol de Omaha South, pero an con todos los logros en la cancha unas cu-antas participaciones en torneos estatales y dos lugares como subcampen no se haba logrado obtener un ttulo estatal. Maass y su programa por fin obtuvieron ese elusivo premio para el futbol soccer de la escuela en el 2013.

Ahora Chubick lo ha logrado despus de la victoria 59-50 sobre Fremont en las finales Clase A en Lincoln, en el partido del 12 de marzo. Los Packers terminaron 28-1.

Omaha South ingres al torneo como el favorito indiscutible en el lugar nme-

ro 1 despus de una temporada regular de 25-1 en la cual el equipo en prome-dio venca a sus oponentes por 69 a 44. La nica gran derrota fue a manos de un club de Colorado en un evento en Grand Island. En Lincoln, los Packers mostraron el atletismo que les separa de su compe-tencia dentro del Estado. Por lo menos tres Packers tienen un compromiso de beca Divisin I y las escuelas D-I estn buscando a un cuarto. Omaha South cuando nadie ms lo quera, Chubick se comprometi con un programa de basquetbol con una cultura de siempre perder. Pareca un reto de-salentador, pero Chubick no lo vea de esa manera.

Desde mi punto de vista, no podan ir a ningn lugar ms que hacia arriba, co-ment el entrenador a este reportero en la vspera del torneo estatal. Todos pen-saban que era una situacin sin remedio, pero yo lo percib como una situacin sin nada que perder y todo que ganar, le dijo a otro reportero.

l saba que poda ganar, pero no es-peraba que fuera a calificar durante seis temporadas consecutivas al torneo es-tatal y que jugaran tres finales durante dicho periodo.

No s si lo hubiera credo si me lo hu-bieran dicho hace nueve aos.

Pero levantar programas es lo que hace mejor.

No lo s, tal vez es mi personalidad, nos dijo. Yo antes construa casas, as que tal vez soy un constructor y eso es lo que me motiva. Yo llego y trato de con-struir programas. Antes de Omaha South, yo llegaba, los construa y me iba, pero me he quedado en este. Me gusta el Sur de Omaha y siempre me ha gustado. Sus habitantes son de la clase trabajadora y ese soy yo, as que es una buena combi-nacin.

Adems, l ha encontrado una gran base de atletas estudiantes que incluye a nios que necesitan del fuerte y positivo ejemplo a seguir que l representa.

Sabes, he estado en las colinas areno-sas de Nebraska y en los maizales de Iowa, enseando y trabajando como en-trenador. Yo comenc en el centro de la ciudad en Tech (Omaha Technical High School) y despus regres al centro de la ciudad para este trabajo. Este es el traba-jo ms satisfactorio que jams he tenido. No s si logr ayudar a los nios cuando estbamos en los suburbios o en las co-munidades agrcolas, pero estoy seguro de que estamos ayudando a los nios aqu y eso me hace sentir muy bien.

No siempre ha tenido este tipo de talento con el cual trabajar. Varios ju-gadores han pasado a jugar en el bas-quetbol universitario y hay ms talento en preparacin. El equipo de este ao comenz con cuatro jugadores may-ores pero su jugador de mayor impacto, Aguek Arop, es un ala juvenil. l fue el lder en Omaha South en cuanto a pun-tos y jug junto a Makoor, su hermano mayor, para lograr tener una defensa de alta presin y una ofensa de alta eficien-cia. Estn entre el gran nmero de nati-vos de Sudn del Sur que han llegado a ser la gran diferencia en el basquetbol al igual que sucedi en el futbol soccer de Omaha South con los jugadores nativos de Mxico y Centroamrica.

He tenido muy buenos equipos du-rante mis aos como entrenador, co-ment Chubick, y hace tres aos tuve al equipo ms talentoso que jams he dirigido. Simplemente tenan mucho tal-ento. Ese era un grupo muy especial. To-dos ahora estn jugando basquetbol en alguna universidad. Pero no tenan una buena qumica. No jugaban bien juntos y tampoco se llevaban bien.

l considera a sus Packers de 2015-2016 como no muy detrs en cuanto a talento a ese equipo anterior, pero s estn muy por encima de dicho grupo en cuanto a su cohesin. Su qumica es muy buena y han trabajado mucho para poder llegar hasta donde estn.

El base Monte McGary, quien firm para jugar con South Dakota State, co-ment: Yo pienso que lo mejor es que nos llevamos muy bien como equipo. Todos nos caemos bien y eso hace que sea ms divertido. Casi todos nosotros jugamos en el mismo equipo desde sexto grado y despus todos llegamos a jugar aqu. An si no furamos a jugar juntos, todos nos conocamos.

McGary dijo que la unin del equipo se refleja en su generosa manera de ju-gar.

Cuando estamos de lo mejor todos jugamos defensa y nos divertimos com-partiendo el baln y a nadie le importa ser quien deba anotar. Simplemente es-tamos en la cancha jugando.

Eso es lo que Omaha South hizo en Lincoln.

El juego de punta a punta de los Pack-ers termin por desgastar las energas y la voluntad de sus oponentes.

Aguek Arop comenta que el juego sigui a la letra la manera de jugar de Omaha South.

Movemos el baln, atacamos, forza-mos balones perdidos, logramos desviar los intentos, lo hacemos todo. Con una gran defensa logramos anotar puntos fciles durante la transicin.

Aguek y McGary dijeron que estaban muy hambrientos de poder por fin ll-evar el trofeo a Omaha South. McGary mencion cmo deseaban escribir sus nombres en los libros de historia.

Ahora con el ttulo en mano, McGary coment: Nos da mucho gusto por el programa y la escuela. En verdad es algo especial.

Estamos muy contentos por el pro-grama y la escuela. Es algo en verdad especial.

Ha sido nuestra meta durante los ltimos tres aos poder ser el equipo triunfador en el torneo, dijo Chubick. Estuvimos cerca el ao pasado. Creo que estos muchachos tenan que llegar a esto. Pienso que estaban en una misin y no iban a dejar que nada se interpus-iere en su camino.

Chubick elogi a Caleal Walker como el hroe no reconocido del equipo,

agregando: l lidera con su ejemplo. Uno quiere tener un jugador completo que siempre da un cien por ciento de su esfuerzo y ese es Caleal Walker.

En el juego por el ttulo, Walker real-iz grandes jugadas y clavadas para lle-gar a anotar 20 puntos. l anot 56 pun-tos en Lincoln y fue nombrado el capitn honorario del equipo de todo el torneo.

Chubick agreg: Y adems tienes a Monte como base fuerte y a Karlon Mc-Spadden como ala-pvot. Aguek proba-blemente es el que tiene ms talento. En verdad es especial.

El entrenador no mencion a Noah Fant, gran hombre de Omaha South y re-cluta de futbol americano en Iowa. Pero el jugador de 6 pies y 5 pulgadas y de 220 libras tuvo una gran participacin con su presencia y fsico.

Chubick nos comenta: Todos son hu-mildes. Son buenos chicos y es divertido entrenarlos, adems de que es divertido estar con ellos. No puedo imaginar no estar aqu con ellos. Han sacrificado mucho y han llevado a cabo todo lo que les hemos pedido y nos han hecho hacer algunos corajes en varios momentos, pero son nios y es comn que sean as.

l estima tanto a sus jugadores que cuando sufri un infarto al corazn en el da en que se llevara a cabo un juego como visitante a finales de febrero con-tra Lincoln Southeast, decidi no in-gresar a la sala de emergencias sino hasta despus de dirigirlos durante el evento. Yo no quise quedar mal con mis jugadores, coment. Al da siguiente un doctor insert dos stent para des-bloquear sus arterias. Chubick, quien cuenta con una gran condicin fsica y no haba tenido nunca problemas car-diacos, coment que l ahora tiene ms energa que antes. Ya con anterioridad haba sobrevivido un problema con el cncer, adems de sufrir de artritis reu-matoide.

Arop dijo que la gran fortaleza de Chubick los contagia. El que l pudiera salir avante de este infarto al corazn es un buen ejemplo de cmo nosotros debemos luchar contra la fatiga y la ad-versidad.

Chubick admite ser de la vieja escuela, pero agrega: Yo trato de estar actual-izado. Hay que hacerlo todo. Los chicos no quieren escuchar todo el tiempo his-torias sobre un equipo que tuviste hace 30 o 40 aos. Ellos no pueden sentirse identificados con ello, as que no lo hac-emos.

McGary coment que no hay una bre-cha generacional con este entrenador que es muy animado cuando est en la lateral de la cancha.

l se comunica y se relaciona muy bien con nosotros. Desde las gradas pu-ede parecer un tanto loco pero se porta muy bien con nosotros. Nunca tenemos

problemas con l ni nadie le genera problemas.

De no ser por algunas lesiones y sus-pensiones inoportunas, Omaha South estara viviendo un momento dominante como lo hizo Omaha Central a prin-cipios de los aos 2000 con seis ttulos en ocho aos. Pero Chubick retir a algunos de sus mejores jugadores por violar las reglas del equipo y las polti-cas de la escuela. Si hubieran jugado, tal vez South tambin estara celebrando una dinasta. Estamos a nada de lograr lo mismo, excepto que no hemos tenido mucha suerte, nos coment. Sin lesiones graves o problemas dis-ciplinarios en esta temporada, l es-pecula que ha llegado el momento de Omaha South. Tal vez todo se com-binar en esta ocasin, comenta. An-tes del torneo estatal, l expreso su confianza en que el equipo pueda apr-ovechar esta oportunidad.

Han dado lo mejor de ellos mismos en todo momento, excepto por un mal cuarto. Yo no voy a cuestionar si van o no a lograrlo en esta ocasin. Estoy se-guro de que lo lograrn. Mientras mayor es el escenario mejor juegan. Les encanta la atencin. Espero que este evento ter-mine con sabor a campeonato, pero an si las cosas no se dan yo todava pienso lo mejor de estos chicos.

Manejando a sus jugadores como los jugadores de ajedrez en el gimnasio de Omaha South durante una sesin de prctica antes de partir a Lincoln, l co-ment al equipo: Haremos lo que hac-emos. Esto es cdigo y quiere decir: El juego rpido de Omaha South y su pre-sin en toda la cancha ser demasiado para sus oponentes.

Y as lo fue. Omaha South termin por ser demasiado para sus rivales. Despus de que fueron cortadas las re-des, Chubick hizo saber a todos que re-gresara por lo menos un ao ms para volver a buscar la glora en Lincoln.

Prometa a Aguek (Arop) cuando lleg que permanecera aqu hasta que l se graduare, as que quiero cumplir con mi palabra, por lo que estar de vuelta el prximo ao.

Entering the 2016 Nebraska boys state basketball tournament, Omaha South head coach Bruce Chubick occupied the same spot his soc-cer counterpart at South, Joe Maass, found himself in a few years ago.

Maass built the schools once dreadful soccer program to elite status. But among the high national rankings, multiple dis-trict championships and finals appearanc-es, the one thing missing was a state title. Similarly, Chubicks engineered a dramat-ic turnaround with South hoops but for all the on-court feats a handful of state tournament appearances and two runner-up finishes there was no state title to

show for it. Maass and his program finally got that elusive soccer prize in 2013.

Now Chubick has closed the deal after Souths 59-50 win over Fremont in the Class A finals in Lincoln on March 12. The Packers finished 28-1.

South entered as the tourneys prohibitive favorite and No. 1 seed after a 25-1 regular season in whichthe teamoutscored foes 69 to 44 on average. The only loss came to a top Colorado club at a showcase event in Grand Island. In Lincoln, the Packers displayed the athleticism that separates them from their in-state competition. At least three Packers are Division I scholarship commits and D-I schools are looking at a fourth. No one will

ever know if South would have reached this pinnacle with another coach, but the record shows the consistent winning ways began under Chubick, who deflects praise to his staff. Among his assistants is his son, Bruce Chubick Jr., who played for him at Atkinson West Holt before playing at Nebraska.

The fact is the senior Chubick, who at 65 is old enough to be his players grand-father, has flipped programs wherever hes coached in his 42-year career. He led for-mer patsy Atkinson West Holt to a Class C-1 title. At his last stop, Council Buffs Abraham Lincoln, he turned a perennial loser into a winner. Just as Maass took the South soccer job when nobody wanted it,

Chubick committed to a dead end bas-ketball program with a losing culture. It seemed a bleak challenge. Only Chubick didnt see it that way.

I mean, they had nowhere to go but up as far as I could see, he told this reporter on the eve of the state tourney. Every-body thought it was a hopeless situation. But I saw it as nothing to lose and every-thing to gain, he told another reporter.

He knew he could win there but he didnt expect to qualify for state six straight seasons and to play in three finals in that same span.

NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING ON APPLICATIONS FOR NEBRASKA AFFORDABLE

HOUSING TRUST FUNDSNOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that on March 24, at 7:00 PM in the Legislative

Chambers in the Omaha-Douglas City-County Building, 1819 Farnam Street, the City of Omaha will hold a public hearing concerning applications to the Department of Economic Development for three Nebraska Affordable Housing Trust Fund Program (NAHTF) Grants. These grants are available for local affordable housing activities.

The City of Omaha Planning Department, Housing and Community Development Division is applying for three NAHTF grants for the following three programs:

1. The Locust Glen Subdivision Project is the construction of four single-family houses in a new subdivision southwest of 19th and Locust Streets by the City of Omaha. Activities will include site preparation, construction of single-family houses, conveyance of land and deferred payment loans to qualified homebuyers. The City is applying for $300,000 in NAHTF funds which will be matched by $550,000 of City HOME Investment Partnerships Program funds and/or Neighborhood Stabilization Program funds for a total project cost of $850,000. All of the requested NAHTF funds will benefit low- and moderate-income people. Portions of the NAHTF funds will be used for SF New Construction Homebuyer activities -- $250,000, Housing Manage-ment -- $25,000, and General Grant Administration -- $25,000. No displacement of residents will occur.

2. The Neighborhood Infill Housing Project is the construction nine single-family homes on scattered lots; five in the Clifton Hills South Neighborhood south-west of 42nd and Ohio Streets and four in the Cornerstone II neighborhood south of 18th and Clark Streets. Five of the houses will be constructed by GESU Housing Corporation and four by the City of Omaha. Activities will include site preparation, construction of single-family houses, conveyance of land and deferred payment loans to qualified homebuyers. The City is requesting $500,000 in NAHTF funds which will be matched by $650,000 in private funds and $858,000 in City HOME Investment Partnerships funds for a total project cost of $2,008,000. All of the requested NAHTF funds will benefit low- and moderate-income people. Portions of the NAHTF funds will be used for SF New Construction Homebuyer activities -- $417,000, Housing Management -- $41,500, and General Grant Administration -- $41,500. No displace-ment of residents will occur.

3. The King Science Homeowner Rehabilitation Program will provide rehabili-tation grants for nine homeowners by the City of Omaha in the King Science Neigh-borhood, bounded clockwise by Sprague Street, Florence Boulevard, Pratt Street, 24th Street, and Wirt Street. The City is requesting $250,000 in NAHTF funds which will be matched by $196,000 of City Community Development Block Grant funds for a total program cost of $446,000. All of the requested funds will benefit low- and moderate-income people. Portions of the NAHTF funds will be used for Housing Rehabilita-tion 209,000, Housing Management -- $20,500, and General Grant Administration -- $20,500. No displacement of residents will occur.

The grant application will be available for public inspection at City of Omaha Planning Department located at 1819 Farnam Street, Suite 1111, Omaha-Douglas City-County Building, Omaha, Nebraska. All interested parties are invited to attend this public hearing at which time you will have an opportunity to be heard regarding the grant applications. I dont know I would have believed that if you told me that nine years ago.

But raising programs from the bottom up is what he does.

I dont know, maybe its just my per-sonality, hesaid. I used to build houses, so I guess maybe Im a builder and thats kind of my M.O. I come in and I try to build programs. Before South, Id get em built and then leave, but Ive kind of stuck around on this one. I like South O, I always have. Its working-class, blue-collar type people, and thats me, so its a good fit.

Besides, hes found a great student-athlete base there that includes kids who need the strong, positive male role model he provides.

You know, Ive been in the Sand Hills of Neb. and the cornfields of Iowa teaching and coaching. I started in the inner city at Tech (Omaha Technical High School). And then I came back to the inner city for this job. This is the most rewarding job Ive had. Im not sure when I was in the suburbs or in the farming communities I was helping kids, but Im pretty sure were helping kids here, and that feels pretty good.

Hes rarely had this kind of talent to build around. Several players have gone on to play college ball and theres more talent in the pipeline. This years squad started four seniors but its most impactful player, Ne-braska basketball pledge Aguek Arop, is a junior wing. He led South in scoring and teamed with his older brother Makoor to key a high pressure defense and high effi-ciency offense. Theyre among many South Sudan natives to emerge as difference mak-ers in hoops just as Mexican-Central Amer-ican natives key Souths soccer resurgence.

Ive had some really good teams over the years, Chubicksaid,and

three years ago here was the most tal-ented team Ive ever coached.

Just tremendously gifted. That was a special bunch. Theyre all playing college ball somewhere. But the chemistry wasnt good. They didnt really mesh together and they didnt really like each other.

He ranks his 2015-2016 Packers as not very far behind talent-wise from that ear-lier team but far ahead in terms of cohe-sion. Their chemistry is great and theyve worked hard to get to where theyre at.

Point guard Monte McGary, signed to play wide receiver at South Dakota State,said, I think the biggest thing is we all get along as a team. Everybody likes each other, so its really fun. The majority of us played on the same team starting in sixth grade and then we all came here. Even if didnt play together, we all knew each other.

McGarysaidthe teams tight bond is re-flected in its unselfish play.

When were at our best were all play-ing defense and just having fun sharing the ball, not caring who scores. Were just out there playing.

Thats just what South did, too, down in Lincoln.

The Packerss baseline to baseline game wore down the bodies and the will of op-ponents.

Aguek Aropsaidit was text book South style ball.

We move the ball, we attack, we force turnovers, we get deflections, all that. With great defense we get easy buckets off transition.

Aguek and McGary said they were very hungry to finally bring a title trophy back to South. McGary spoke of wanting to put our names in the history books.

With the title now in hand, McGary said, Were happy for the program and the school. Its really special.

Its been our goal the last three years to be the last one standing, Chubick said. We came close last year. I dont think there was any denying these guys. I just think they were on a mission and they werent going to let anything to get in the way.

Before the tourney Chubick praised guard Caleal Walker as the teams unsung hero, adding, He leads by example. You want a complete player that gives a hun-dred percent thats Caleal Walker.

In the title game Walker flashed big time moves and dunks in scoring a game-high 20 points. He scored 56 points in Lincoln and was named the all-tournament teams honorary captain.

Chubick added, Then youve got Mon-te, whos steady at point guard, and Karlon McSpadden at wing. Aguek is probably the most gifted of all of them. Hes really spe-cial.

The coach didnt mention South big man and Iowa football recruit Noah Fant, who was in his doghouse. But the 6-foot-5, 220-pounder gave South a solid interior presence and physicality.

Chubick said, Theyre all humble, re-ally good kids, fun to coach, fun to be around. I cant imagine not being around them. Theyve sacrificed and done every-thing weve asked them to do and driven us crazy along the way, but theyre kids, theyre supposed to do that.

He thinks enough of his players that when he suffered a heart attack the day of a late February road game versus Lincoln Southeast he decided against checking himself into the ER until after coaching the contest. I didnt want to quit on the players, hesaid. The next morning a phy-sicias inserted two stents to unblock arter-ies. The youthful Chubick, who stays in great shape and had no prior heart prob-lems,saidhe now has more energy than before. He earlier survived a cancer scare and he deals with rheumatoid arthritis.

Arop said Chubicks toughness rubs off on them. For him to be able to fight through his heart attack, I mean its just a good example for us fighting through like fatigue, adversity.

Chubick admits to being old-school but adds, I try to stay current school, too. You gotta do both. The kids dont want to hear stories all the time about this team you had 30 or 40 years ago. They cant relate to that, so we dont go there.

McGary said theres no generation gap with this coach, whos known to get ani-mated on the sidelines.

He communicates and relates to us really well. From the stands he can look kind of crazy but hes really cool with us, we never have any problems with him, no-body gives him trouble or anything like that.

If not for some ill-timed injuries and suspensions, South may be in the midst of a dominant run like Omaha Central went on in the early 2000s with six titles in eight years. Only Chubicks cut loose some of his best players for violating team rules and school policies. If theyd played, perhaps South would be celebrating a dy-nasty, too. Were an eyelash away from the same thing except we havent been very lucky, he said. Some of those disciplin-ary things we could have looked the other way and probably given ourselves a real good chance to win it, but I dont want it that bad if youre not going to do the right thing,

With no major injury or disciplin-ary problems this season, he speculated Souths time had arrived, saying, Maybe its all going to come together now. Before the state tourney, he expressed confidence in his teams ability to seize the moment.

Theyve risen to the occasion every time except for one bad quarter. Im not going to question whether they will or not this time. Im pretty sure theyre gon-na. The bigger the stage, the better they play. They love the attention. I hope this ends with a state championship, but if it shouldnt work out that way I still think the world of these kids.

Maneuvering his players like chess players in the South gym during a walk-through practice before heading to Lin-coln, he told his team, Well do what we do. Code for: Souths up-tempo, full-court game will be too much for opponents.

Sure enough, South proved too much. After the nets were cut down, Chubick made it know hell be back at least one more year to make another run to Lincoln.

I promised Aguek (Arop) when he came in I would stay until he graduated, so I want to keep my word, so Im back next year anyway.

Whenever he does leave, hes secure that a foundations been built.

Its there. I think its kind of a turn-key thing for somebody down the road, but Im going to keep her for awhile anyway just as long as the health holds up.

LA HISTORIA DE SUPERACIN DE ALBERTO GONZLES

"MI RINCONCITO EN EL CIELO

Fue en el 2003 cuando conoc a Al-berto Beto Gonzlez, durante un evento en su honor en El Museo Latino, donde representantes del

entonces Chicano Awareness Center (hoy La-tino Center of the Midlands), agencias y lderes comunitarios se unan a la voz de muchas fa-milias, la mayora hispanas, para agradecerle su sincera dedicacin y trabajo constante a favor de la juventud de Omaha.

Comentarios como Beto ha sido un padre para mis hijos, gracias a Beto mi hijo dej las drogas y Beto logr que mi familia no se desintegrara a causa de las pandillas, se escuchaban entre las madres que conmovidas soltaban las lgrimas.

Humilde como siempre y visiblemente ape-nado, Beto aceptaba las muestras de cario y reparta abrazos entre los presentes, as como siempre ha repartido sus palabras, de forma genuina, sin esperar nada a cambio.

Ha pasado ms de una dcada desde sa tarde, pero Beto, incansable, an contina con su ardua labor, hablando con el corazn en la mano frente a miles de adolescentes que atentos escuchan la historia de ese nio violento que se fue un da de aventn a Kansas City.

Le agradezco a Dios y a mi madre (ya fallecida), quien siempre estaba rezando por nosotros, el estar aqu, reconoce Beto re-cordando aquellos aos a la deriva rodeado de peligros, porque me sal de casa a los 13 aos y empec con drogas ms fuertes que el alcohol y el tabaco, y comenc a consumir mariguana y pastillas alucingenas.

Cumplidos los 17, Beto tena una iden-tificacin para entrar a las cantinas: Y un da que unos chamacos me culparon de algo que no hice, terminamos de pleito. Queran golpearme pero yo acuchill a dos y uno qued medio muerto. Me iban a dar 30 aos por eso y estando en la crcel me senta ms desamparado que nunca sintiendo que pas-ara mi vida ah.

Pero Beto sali nuevamente a las calles, aunque todava lleno de coraje y sin verdaderos motivos para seguir viviendo: Andaba solito, en mi loquera, caminando por la calle 24, por la escuela South High, pensando este da voy a

matar a alguien o alguien me va a matar a mi, porque ya no haba nada ms.

Cargado de pensamientos oscuros Beto en-tr a un edificio, el Chicano Awareness Center, encontrndose con la mirada comprensiva de la hermana Joyce Englert.

Ese instante fue crucial, porque el desori-entado joven, pese a no saber muy bien cmo expresarse, consigui desahogar con Sister Joyce su pesar: Nunca haba tenido a alguien que quisiera sentarse conmigo, que se interesara por m.

Englert no slo escuch a Beto sino que como consejera del Centro le solicit que la acompaara a un retiro con unos 250 nios, para que les compartiera sus experiencias, mis-mas que tocaron a todos los asistentes, gene-rando llantos y aplausos.

Fue as que la monja le pidi unirse al equipo como consejero, pero Beto se neg: Todos tenemos una pared enfrente y la ma deca vergenza. Cuando la derrumb le dije que no saba leer ni escribir porque haba dejado la escuela. Saba todo sobre la calle pero no saba cmo estudiar, mi edu-cacin termin en 5to grado porque tena muchos problemas con los maestros.

Con paciencia y afecto, la hermana Joyce pas de largo sus frustraciones y a pesar de las mltiples ocasiones en las que aventaba los li-bros contra las paredes le ense lo suficiente a Beto para que regresara a clases, hasta poder matricularse en el colegio comunitario donde se gradu de una carrera tcnica convirtindose en consejero en casos de dependencia y abuso de sustancias txicas, apoyando exitosamente a Englert y a sus compaeros durante aos.

Inspirado y con un firme propsito, despus le lleg la oportunidad de unirse a Boys & Girls Club, y cuando en el 2014 la agencia es-tableci una colaboracin con el Departamento de Polica de Omaha, la amplia experiencia de Beto le hizo acreedor al merecido ttulo Espe-cialista en Prevencin de Pandillas e Interven-ciones en el sur de la ciudad.

Afortunadamente el camino recorrido, las batallas y su inmensa espiritualidad, quedaron grabados en el libro Mi rinconcito en el cielo (My little corner of the sky) que acertadamente

escribi la Dr. Theresa Barron-McKeagney, De-cana Asociada del Colegio de Asuntos Pblicos y Servicio Comunitario de UNO, que sali a la venta el ao pasado: Theresa hizo un trabajo increble creando una lectura fcil para toda la familia, pero tambin para los profesionales. Mucho de mi camino de destruccin fue el re-sultado de algunos de los profesionales que no me ayudaron, desde maestros hasta policas. Ahora los respeto pero tuve muy malos encuen-tros y mi confianza hacia la autoridad era nula.

Tristemente Beto reconoci que: Cuando llegu a las 4 aos no poda hablar ingls y fue mi propia gente, los mexicanos, quienes nos trataban mal. Vea a mi madre llorando y no lo entenda as que tuve una crisis de identidad porque me llamaban mojado, una palabra que odio.

Ahora a sus casi 58 aos, Beto est recon-ciliado con la vida: Aunque hay veces que cu-ando estoy solito, pienso en mi pasado y lloro. Eso no va a desaparecer por completo, porque no importa en cuntas camas de hospitales psiquitricos duermas, t cargas cicatrices den-tro de ti. Lo bueno es que si aprendes a confiar en alguien como yo lo hice, sales adelante.

Romper el ciclo de abuso entre las familias para que la violencia no contine por genera-ciones es una de las metas de Beto, as como el que los padres de familia dejen de estar ater-rorizados por sus hijos y tomen las riendas de su disciplina y educacin: Que estn presentes, que sean parte de su vida.

Y mientras Beto sigue trabajando por ello, las ventas del libro aumentan: Mi deseo es que las ganancias se vayan al Centro para que ah pu-edan utilizarse para ayudar a alguien con una historia como la ma, porque yo les estoy infini-tamente agradecido por lo que hicieron por mi.

Esperanzado en que as sea, Beto sonre francamente y apunta hacia arriba diciendo: Yo siempre digo que Diosito ya tiene un lugar all para mi.

CARGO SOLICITA JUSTICIARamn Mendoza, un ciudadano naturalizado, fue

detenido por cuatro das por oficiales del Condado de Sarpy bajo la sospecha que Mendoza haba violado la leyes federales de inmigracin. Mendoza fue parado por obstruccin de su parabrisas, por tener colgada la medalla de boxeo de su hijo en el espejo retrovisor. A CHARGE NEEDS JUSTICERamon Mendoza, a naturalized United States citizen,

was held for four days by Sarpy County law enforcement on the suspicion that Mendoza was in violation of federal immigration laws. Mendoza was pulled over for wind-shield obstruction having his sons boxing medallion the size of a quarter hanging from his rearview mirror. During this time, Mendozas family attempted to provide Sarpy County with numerous documents proving his citizenship as well as his required daily medication and they were turned away.

Mendoza filed a lawsuit because of violation of his rights and dignity but a federal district court dismissed a lawsuit on March 7.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Nebraska announced plans to appeal the decision to the Eight Circuit Court of Appeals. Many courts around the nation have held the practices in which Sarpy County and Immigration and Customs Enforcement engaged are vio-lations of the Fourth Amendment. Not only was Mendoza pulled over for a barely plausible reason, held for four days without being charged with a crime, and denied access to his medication, but he was also called racial slurs by Sarpy County law enforcement officers, said ACLU of Nebraska Legal Director Amy Miller.

Since the case was filed, Nebraska law makers have changed windshield obstruction to a secondary offense, meaning law enforcement can no longer pull someone over for that reason alone.

The law has spoken loudly and clearly programs that hold people who have committed no crime on the suspi-cion that they are undocumented are unconstitutional, said Miller. We will keep fighting until Mr. Mendoza has the justice he deserves.

Additionally, ICE programs such as the one used to detain Mendoza on the suspicion that he was undocu-mented have been ruled to be unconstitutional by courts around the country, leading ICE to all but discontinue the programs and leading Nebraskas largest counties to alter their participation so that only those with a criminal charge are run against immigration databases.

B ack in 2003 I got to meet Alber-to Beto Gonzalez at an event held in his honor at El Museo Latino when representatives

of the Chicano Awareness Center (which today is known as the Latino Center of the Midlands), agencies and community leaders joined the voices of many families, most of them of Latino heritage, and thanked him for his dedication and work for the young people of Omaha. One could hear comments from mothers who were crying tears of joy: Beto has been like a father to my children; thanks to Beto, my son stopped using drugs; or Beto helped us so that our family didnt end up broken because of gangs.

As humble as always and a bit embarrassed by the extra attention, Beto kindly accepted all the praise and hugged everyone at the event, always from the heart and without ever ex-pecting something in return.

Its been over a decade since that event, but Beto continues to work hard, always speaking candidly in front of thousands of teenagers who listen to the story of the violent kid who one day hitched a ride to Kansas City.

I thank God and my mother (who has passed away), who always prayed for us be-cause thanks to that Im still alive, acknowl-edges Beto, remembering a time when he was drifting in and out of danger. I left home when I was 13 years old, and I started using drugs much stronger than alcohol and tobac-co, doing marijuana and hallucinogen pills.

By the time he was 17, Beto had an ID to go into bars. One day some kids blamed me for something I didnt do, and we ended up fight-ing. They wanted to punch me, but I stabbed two of them, and one ended up half dead. I was going to get 30 years in prison for that, and while I was in there, I felt helpless, knowing I would spend the rest of my life there.

But Beto managed to return to the streets, still full of anger and with no real reason to live: I was on my own, acting crazy, walk-ing down 24th Street, close to South High, thinking this is the day I kill someone or that someone kills me, because there was nothing else for me to do.

With his mind full of dark thoughts, Beto entered the building for the Chicano Aware-ness Center, finding himself face to face with the understanding eyes of Sister Joyce Englert.

That was a crucial moment in his life be-cause, even though he didnt know how to ex-press himself, he managed to vent with Sister Joyce: I had never had someone want to sit next to me, to take an interest in me.

Englert didnt just settle for listening to Beto. As counselor for the Centro, she asked him to come to a spiritual retreat with around 250 kids so that he could share his story with them - everyone connected with what he said and everyone ended up clapping or in tears.

It was then that the nun asked him to join the team as counselor, but he refused: We all have a wall in front of us and mine said shame. When I was able to knock it down, I told her that I didnt know how to read or wrote be-cause I had quit school. I knew everything about the street life, but I had no idea how to study - my education ended at the 5th grade because I had a lot of problems with teachers.

With patience and a lot of caring, Sister Joyce managed to help him overcome his frus-tration and, even though many times he would just throw all books against the walls, she managed to teach Beto enough skills for him to be able to go back to school, and he even-tually managed to enroll at the community college, where he graduated from a technical career to become counselor for drug depen-dence and abuse, supporting Englert and his coworkers for many years.

Feeling inspired and with a proper purpose in life, he then joined the Boys & Girls Club, and later in 2014 the agency started to collabo-rate with the Omaha Police Department where Betos expertise landed him a new job as Gang Prevention and Interventions Specialist for South Omaha.

Everything he lived through, all the battles fought and his immense spirituality have been recorded in a book called Mi rincon-cito en el Cielo (My little corner of the sky) written by Dr. Theresa Barron-McK-eagney, Associate Dean for the College of Public Affairs and Community Service at

UNO, which was released last year: The-resa did an amazing job creating a book that is easy to read by the whole family, but also with valuable information for profes-sionals. A lot of the problems I had to go through were because there were profes-sionals who didnt help me, from teachers to police officers. I respect them now, but I had some rough exchanges, and I didnt really trust the authority back then.

Sadly, Beto acknowledges: When I arrived here I was four years old and couldnt speak English, and it was my own people, the Mexi-cans, who treated me badly. I would see my mother crying and I didnt understand it, so I had an identity crisis because they called me a mojado, which is a word I really hate.

Now almost 58 years old, Beto is now at peace with life: I do have to admit there are sometimes when I feel a bit alone, and I re-member my past and end up crying. That wont completely go away, because no matter how many beds you sleep on at psychiatric hospitals, the scars are inside you all the time. But if you learn to trust people as I did, then you can carry on with your life.

Breaking the cycle of abuse between fami-lies so that violence does not continue to exist for future generations is one Betos goals, and that parents stop being terrorized by their chil-dren and can take responsibility for educating and disciplining them: They have to be pres-ent, they have to be part of their life.

And as Beto continues to work on this grand project, the book sales continue to increase: I want the profits from sales to go straight to the Centro so that they can help someone with a similar story to mine, because Im infinitely grateful for what they did for me.

Hoping this project continues to improve the life of kids, Beto smiles and points to the sky: I always say that God already has a place up there for me.
