This months Gallery Talk columnby Myrna Zanetell recounts theprogress achieved by Dr. MichaelTomor during his nine-year tenure asdirector of the El Paso Museum of Art.That tenure ends this March as he headsfor a new post as director of the Tampa(Fla.) Museum of Art.Expectations were high for the newdirector when he arrived here in 2006.He succeeded Becky Duval Reese, whooversaw the building of the MuseumsDowntown home and raised the stan-dards of its exhibitions to a new level. Atthe same time, there was a gap betweenthe Museum and some members of thelocal arts community.Tomor, a native son of El Paso who waseducated and began his museum career inPennsylvania, turned out to be the perfectleader to bridge that gap. You can readMyrnas column on Page 35 to learnmore about Tomors accomplishments. We certainly appreciate his efforts hereand wish him continued success inFlorida.Ive had various contacts with Michaelover his nine years here, and on everyoccasion he has been an outgoing, charming and committed advocate for thearts. He made himself highly visible at avariety of arts events beyond the museumwalls, and even joined El Paso Scene ona couple of our annual hikes up MountCristo Rey.He and Duval Reese were very differentin personality, but together their leader-ship at the Museum has made it the mostprominent cultural institution in El Paso. That makes the selection of the nextdirector particularly challenging. At least part of Tomors reason for leav-ing was the lack of sensitivity to the artsamong El Pasos city leaders, Myrnawrites in her column.I think its significant that when Tomorfirst arrived in El Paso, the city had justembarked on a new push in the arts sec-tor. The city had brought the author ofThe Rise of the Creative Class to townto explain his research on the impact ofthe arts on the overall success of urbanprogress, and launched a Creative

Class program for future civic leaders. You dont hear that much today fromthe city regarding the arts. Part of theproblem has been the turnover in thecitys top arts position, the director of theMuseums and Cultural AffairsDepartment. That was originally knownas the Arts Resources Department, whichAlejandrina Drew led for 17 years beforeleaving in 2004. Since then, the depart-ment has had two other directors, plusone or two interim directors. The newest director of Museums andCultural Affairs, Tracey Jerome, just tookoffice earlier this year (ironically, she lefta job in Florida). Perhaps the biggestimpact she will make will come from herfirst major challenge: finding MichaelTomors replacement.
