    Who Killed

    The Electric Car?

Never trust a corporation orbig business. That messagecomes through loud and clear inWho Killed The Electric Car? Cur-rent in the extreme, this must seemovie rom Sony Pictures Clas-sics and Mongrel Media revealsthe lengths some business lead-ers will go to protect their ownpersonal interests and the publicbe damned. Only being shownat Vancouvers Fith Avenue Cin-

emas, i there ever was a need to get a wider release on an importantsubject this is it!

Hot on the heels o skyrocketing oil prices at the pump we re-ect back on the attempts to produce an electric car. Few will remem-ber that back in the 1970s General Motors and a host o other majorautomobile manuacturers did in act put into production an electriccar. Unortunately or consumers then and now the giant edoms inDetroit never gave the vehicle a chance to catch on. Allegations o lacko demand rom the public sparked an unbelievable journey that sawa totally viable vehicle with huge attributes literally relegated to thescrap heap thanks to subteruge and greed.

Lots o blame ought to be shared or the demise o this prom-ising transport innovation. Viewers will be mesmerized at the lack oaccountability this lm reveals through insightul interviews with carowners, engineers and government bureaucrats as the x was denite-ly in at the highest levels o government to neutralize this promisingdevelopment and nip it in the bud.

Instead big oil and the auto industry, earing loss o prot, ensured the ailure o the electric car, going so ar as to destroy everyworking model despite the preerence o owners wanting to keep their

vehicles. Through insightul interviews and ootage o historical adsyou cant help but eel incensed as to how a solution to our currentpollution problems and energy woes was at hand way back then hadonly the powers that be allowed the electric car to survive. Talk aboutshort-sighted stupidity!

Anger will resonate loudly with everyone who sees this movieas to the lengths political leaders have gone to dupe the North Ameri-can public all with an eye to lining their pockets through political dona-tions rom big oil and the like. How short-sighted were the politicianso the day!

Celebrities like Tom Hanks and Mel Gibson add their chorusto the ranks o V-Car owners who come out swinging against all whokilled a promising technology which could have had a major benetor todays consumers. Appearances by Ralph Nader urther embolden

the claims o the lmmakers who make quite the case or the dangerso short-sightedness and corruption in Washington and state legisla-tures.

Narrated by Martin Sheen, Who Killed The Electric Car is amust see documentary whose message should not be lost on anyone(except the oil companies, greedy carmakers, and their questionableethics and ilk)!

Today anythinggoes. Morality seems tohave gone out the win-dow thanks to our liberalattitude and the growtho the internet. Sins o theesh are commonplacemuch to the dismay o

conservative disciples. Likely set in the seventeenth century Measureor Measure explores the role o the state at a time when censorshipand conservatism reigned supreme.

Once upon a time lovely Venice was the mecca or de-bauchery. Hark back to the days o Casanova to rekindle the debateso privacy versus promiscuity. At that time government leader DukeVincentio took it upon himsel to eliminate illicit ornication. Todaywe laugh in those days some cried at the ate o big time oendersClaudio and Juliet. Set to die by the powers that be chie executionerGeneral Angelo was set to do the deed.

Backed by the state and under strict government rules An-gelo was hell bent to make a lesson out o the love between Clau-dio and Juliet. To save the day Claudios sister, a nun in training, isintroduced in a last ditch eort to plead or Claudios lie. Against thisback drop o high amily intrigue the Duke decides to observe the

proceedings and under an uncanny disguise as a riar checks up onthe proceedings. What ollows is a delightul game o deception andlove labours as Angelos heavy-handed state sanctioned approachgets turned on its head in this riotous two hour east or the eyes thateatures comedy, morality and great perormances.

Led by the commanding presence o jack-booted IanButcher in the role o the unrelenting Angelo you all head over heelsor the plight o the lovers against the rule o an unjust law. Cast as ill-ated lovers Claudio and Juliet are Kyle Rideout and Tara Jean Wilkinwho wear their hearts on the sleeve.

Few sets bear great ruit as you get caught up in the powero the state and the desperation o the innocents. Sure to strike aresponsive chord with members o the cloth is Karen Rae as nun Isa-bella, a saintly sister who pleads like no other. Above all else leaders

need to lead and Scott Bellis proves that politicians back then knewhow to do the right thing as the Duke, a true man o the people.Humour springs up throughout this classic romance with

unnymen Elbow and Pompey bringing good cheer as a lawman anda ladys man extraordinaire. Both Josue Laboucane and Allan Zinykare perectly matched as this ill-ated pair.

Lots o laugh, nice costumes and a story still relevant tothis day make Measure or Measure a joyul experience under thosegorgeous Vancouver skies. Worth catching this summer Measure orMeasure remains in Vancouver until Sept. 23. For tickets and showtimes contact (604) 739-0559 or go to www.bardonthebeach.org

Some directors rene their style with time. Alexde la Iglesia is one o them. Better known or mak-ing movies dealing with the grotesque and darkhumor, Perect Crime deals with themes De laIglesia recurrently explores, since Mirindas Asesi-nas his rst short lm, or Mutant Action (1993),

The day o the Beast (1995) or Perdita Durango(1997).Perect Crime also mixes dark humor and the gro-tesque. The characters o the story are extremelycontrasted. Raael (Guillermo Toledo) has a per-ect lie, surrounded by beautiul women, a great

job and no commitments. While Lourdes (MnicaCervera) is the opposite: Ugly, clumsy and addict-ed to reality shows.Alex De La Iglesia explores the theme o guilty-ness as a weapon o manipulation and power.Which turns out as a great combination o goodentertainment.

    Perect Crime

The story is told rom Raaels point o view, who is a womanizer, but is thosekind o stories where the hunter becomes the prey, and Lourdes becomedominant gure ater being so insecure.Writen by Jorge Jorge Guerrita Echevarria & Alex De La Iglesia we can seehow Misogynist is this point o view: A woman must be beatiul and be anobject o desire, i she is ugly she is evil as a witch. Only De la Iglesia can

get away with it, because he balances the story with a lot o humour andhilarious situations.

    Synopsis:

RAFAEL is charming and ambitious. He likes beautiulwomen, elegant clothes and exclusive circles. He worksat a department store. He has turned the Ladys sectioninto his particular stronghold. He is a born salesman, itssimply in his blood. RAFAEL aims to become the newHead o Section. His main rival is DON ANTONIO, theveteran manager o the Gentlemens section. As badluck and destiny would have it, DON ANTONIO dies ac-cidentally ater a heated discussion. The only witness tothe crime is LOURDES, a horrendous, nave and obses-sive saleslady. She does not hesitate to blackmail RA-FAEL to turn him into her lover, her husband, her slave.

RAFAEL goes crazy as he sees his sophisticated worldslowly degenerating into a vulgar hell. In a t o mad-ness, he comes up with an inallible plan to get rid oLOURDES. He cannot aord a single mistake. Everythingmust be FERPECT.

About his characters Alex de la Iglesia remarks:

I adore envious but attractive characters. The ones who seems nice

but they arent, the ones who try to do evil things but, It ends up wrong.

Rafael is like that, a seducer, ambitious, egocentric. He educated him-

self watching documentaries on TV and aspires to a perfect world made

by to his own shape. When destiny strikes him, he becomes a little Mac-

beth from the XXI century, tormented by his squisofrenic conscience.

Rafael es as: seductor, ambicioso, egocntrico.

During the seventies there was a latin american singer called PaOrtega who used to sing a song called Prometimos no llorar translaas we promised not to cry. It was a very passive agressive song aba man whos telling her girlriend on a restaurant that their relationsis over. The poor girl is crying and he just tells her sotly and sweekeep it quiet because its too embarassing. Oddly enough the song a huge success and the guy is still remembered by our mothers as on

the cooles and cute singers rom their time. Los super elegantes reate that song with a similar attitude, just the woman is, lets ace it, that patethic!Their songs really captured my attention, and ater searching abthem I ound out they organize perormances on gallery shows alowith their music. Which makes them really a unique musical group. They started creating music or movies. sixteen was the title used ohija del Cannbal a movie starring amous spanish actress Cecilia Rot

The group is new so, there is not much inormation about it, but wcares? Their music speak or them. i you want to listen to their sosome o them are available at their website:

    The King

A vengarse?

juego simblico y semntico: Corpus Christi, Texas.

    A Scanner Darkly

    Who killed the Electric Car?

    Por Luca Santiago Dants.

    Interesante documental dirigido
