El futuro

• Es un tiempo bien facil.

• Para conjugar, añades las siguientes teminaciónes al infinitivo:

• á emos

• ás

• á án

• Ejemplo:

• Hablaré, hablarás, hablará, hablaremos, hablarán

• Escribiré, escribirás, escribirá, escribiremos, escribirán

¡Qué fácil!

• Todos verbos regulares tienen las mismas terminaciones.

• Nadaré (I will swim)

• Comeré (I will eat)

• Asistiré (I will attend)

• El condicional es muy semejante al futuro.

• Empiezas con el infinitivo, y añades las mismas terminaciones a todos los verbos.

• Esas terminaciones son:

• ía íamos

• ías

• ía ían

• Siempre las mismas terminaciones:

• Cocinaría (I would cook)

• Correría (I would run)

• Iría (I would go)

• Sería (I/it would be)

¿Es tan fácil?

• No exactamente.

• Hay unos verbos irregulares…claro.

• Tienen las mismas terminaciones, pero las raíces (the stems/roots) son irregulares.

• Los irregulares más comunes son:

• Poner: pondr-

• Hacer: har-

• Decir: dir-

• Tener: tendr-

• Querer: querr-

• Saber: sabr-

• Venir: vendr-

• Por ejemplo:

• Yo pondré la mesa esta noche, antes de la cena.

• Nosotros tendremos mucha tarea este fin de semana.

• O en el condicional:

• Yo haría mi trabajo para sacar buenas notas.

• Ustedes tendrían muchos problemas en mi situación.

El futuro

• The future tense is often translated into English as shall or will and expresses future actions or conditions.

• Iré al cine con ustedes.

• Estaré lista a las dos.

• The future tense of hay is habrá.

• ¿Habrá comida en la fiesta?

Future Tense in Conditional Sentences

• Contrary-to-fact conditions: We will come back to these when we look at the subjunctive.

• Ej. Si mi padre estuviera en casa, contestaría el teléfono. • Dad is NOT at home, so this is a contrary-to fact-statement.• Different than: Si mi padre está en casa, contesta el teléfono.

Dad may or may not be home.• Or: Si mi padre me presta su teléfono celular, lo llamaré.• If my father lends me his cell phone (and it is likely that he

will), I will call him.• Example expresses the assumption that if certain

conditions take place, there is, or will be, a certain result.

Basically…If/then clauses

• If/then clauses are only going to come in two brands:

• Contrary-to-fact: Subjunctive + conditional

• Si mi padre prestara su teléfono celular, lo llamaría.

• UNLIKELY that dad will let you borrow the phone.

• Not-contrary-to-fact: Indicative + future (or even present)

• Si mi padre presta su teléfono celular, lo llamaré.

• LIKELY that dad will let you borrow the phone.

Future to express probability/wonderment

• The future tense is often used in a question, to wonder about the present or the future:

• ¿Llegará el tren a tiempo?• Or in a statement to express conjecture or guess about the

present:• José tendrá quince años.• SO, the future is used to express probability or

wonderment about the present and/or future, while the conditional is used to express wonderment and conjectures about the past.

El Condicional

• The conditional is often translated by would:• Sería un placer ir con ustedes.• Roberto dijo que no llegaría temprano.• The conditional of the verbs gustar, poder, and deber is

often used to make polite requests*.• Me gustaría hablar con Pedro.• ¿Podría decirme dónde queda la escuela?• Deberías abrir la ventana.• *Imperfect subjunctive forms of these verbs are also used for

this purpose.

Conditional to express probability/wonderment

• The conditional is often used in a question to wonder about something in the past:

• ¿Llegaría la carta a tiempo?

• Or in a statement to express a conjecture or guess about the past (like saying probably/I’m guessing):

• No sé, la carta llegaría con tres semanas de retraso.
