History of Madrid

People have lived in Spain's central meseta for thousands of years.In the late ninth century, with the arrival of the Moors fromNorthern Africa, an Arab town began to take create what is nowknown as modern Madrid. The name Madrid is said to be ofArabic decent. Up until the early 1930s Madrid had faced many

conflicts between past rulers and branches of the catholic church.The nation was deeply divided by political ideology. Many Spaniardsdidn't want a monarchy and sought a more democratic form ofgovernment. This resulted in civil war. It wasnt until Franco's deathin 1975 brought profound changes to Spain and Madrid. With KingJuan Carlos (1938) leading the way, Spain embarked on a

democratization process that affected every institution within thecountry. Free from the conservative constraints of a dictatorship,Madrid became a more cosmopolitan city during the 1980s and1990s. Its elected leaders began to pay more attention to theenvironment and passed laws to protect the city's architecturaltreasures, air, and water.

Madrid-Barajas Airport servesas one end of the Madrid-Barcelona routewhich is routinely ranked as the busiest airroute in the world.
