EIGHTEENTH LIST OF SOVIET STATISTICAL ABSTRACTS

THE present list, like the seventeenth, comprises abstracts recorded in Knizhnaya letopis' from mid-year to mid-year (in this case from no. 27 of I974 to no. 26 of I975) together with the Comecon yearbook issued during the same period. Its publication has been delayed for six months in the hope of increasing its value as a guide to holdings, and in fact more than one library has been able to report a substantially larger proportion of items as already received. The flow of new acquisitions will, of course, continue-in this sense the list is likely to be out of date before it is published-but it is worth noting that of the regional sector abstracts, which tend to be printed in a few hundred copies, only the UN Library has so far acquired as many as half.

The total number of items does not much differ from the adjusted total for I973/74 (47 compared with 50). One title, Pechat' SSSR v I972 g., appears in both lists; the later publication, though there is no precedent for this, may be an abridged version of the earlier. There are only two abstracts for sub-regions of the RSFSR and none for those of other republics, unless one counts the city of Riga, for which an abstract was previously published in 1968. On the other hand, one or more full abstracts has been produced for each of the union republics except Estonia (represented in section III below only by an Estonian edition of the yearbook entered in the seventeenth list), which at least gives promise that regular publication will be continued at this level. Among the sector abstracts for individual republics, Sel'skoe khozyaistvo Litovskoi SSR and Torgovlya Litovskoi SSR are now also established as annuals, beginning with the volumes for 1970, while Sel'skoe khozyaistvo Latviiskoi SSR updates a publication only three years older.

Collections of Soviet statistics dated between I9I8 and 1972 have now been listed in Statisticheskie publikatsii v SSSR, by E. A. Mashikhin and V. M. Simchera (M., x975). Although this seems in general a very thorough piece of work, it omits some of the earlier, but not superseded, publications of the Commissariat of Finance and other central agencies.l Another list of almost 600 single volumes and serials, mainly postwar, appears on pp. 54-105 of Guide to geographical bibliographies and reference works in Russian or on the Soviet Union, by Chauncy D. Harris, published by the University of Chicago Department of Geography also in 1975. Whenever possible, Professor Harris cites the vernacular titles of non-Russian and bilingual publications, which are then indexed under both titles.
