WORD FROM THE CHAIR [HOME]

By Robert Jelking As October begins, it feels a bit like May in reverse. With the summer behind us and the winter ahead, there seems to be a long list of things to do to pack up the summer and prepare for the cold weather ahead before the deep freeze arrives.

In Karen's garden, a warm fall has ensured that many blooming annuals such as geraniums, hibiscus, violets, chrysanthemums, roses and nasturtiums remain to colour our world for a little while longer. The spring bulbs have to be planted and the tender herbs have to be harvested or brought into the house. We harvested all our Basil and made our winter supply of Pesto. Karen has planted dozens of bulbs which the squirrels have already discovered.

I haven't seen too many trees with fall colours yet, but I know this may change quickly. The lawn has received its last cut and may go dormant soon. At the cottage, we have to eat up all the foods we brought up this summer and finish the projects we started this summer. Painting projects have to be completed and boat/motor have to be winterized. Canadian Thanksgiving will be here soon. That will be the occasion for the last few days of fishing and enjoying our crisp outdoor fall. I love making fires in the little black stove. We are now also paying the price for our warm dry bug-free summer (relatively).

Water levels in the upper Mississippi water shed are very low and will be drawn down early this year in order to supply the needs downstream, Power Dam, wells, etc.

At the Centre, the fall activities have restarted. In our Computer Club, I notice that many people are struggling to keep up with the unending unpleasant surprises launched at us by information technology. It takes up our time; we didn't ask for it and it leaves us looking for help. We wind up forced to relearn to do things in new ways. Our old computer which was working fine suddenly turns into eJunk, our paper bills now want to come online, our newsletter becomes a website, all the best shows are now available only on streaming services and our cable now comes in on the phone line while the phone service is provided by the cable company. And how can I remember all those passwords that should be changed every 90 days? I'm sure that everyone has their own list. Our Computer Club is a good place to meet people who have found solutions to common problems, to find help and to share your solutions with other people. It meets on the first and third Tuesday of every month.

In the last Hub, I asked for help with our Volunteer Board. I thank the two people who were able to help. We need more. We need an Assistant Website Manager, a Treasurer, a Communications Coordinator and a Hub Editor, as well as additional Board members.

NEWS FROM THE OFFICE

ACTIVITY REPS MEETING [HOME] Thanks to all the Activity Reps for coming out to our annual meeting on September 13th. You work very hard throughout the year for your activities and it is greatly appreciated by me and by everyone in your group (at least they should!). I would also like to thank Jocelyn from Riverpark Place for generously providing the delicious lunch.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING & OPEN HOUSE [HOME] As this issue is going to print before October 18th, there isn’t much I can say except many thanks to everyone who is planning to volunteer their time that day. Hopefully it will be a success like last year with close to 300 people in attendance. ATTENDANCE DRAW [HOME] The draw occurs every two weeks on Friday (except for statutory holidays). Put your Loonie in the attendance draw box and during the two-week period, register your name in the book on top of the box, and then hope your name is drawn. You can’t win if you don’t play! If no one wins within 5 draws, on that 5th draw we will continue to draw numbers until a winner has been established.

COMPUTER VOLUNTEERS NEEDED [HOME] We now have WiFi in the Heritage room as well as Hall F. Along with the computer courses we will be offering, we would also like to start up one-on-one tutoring with volunteers. If you would be interested in being a volunteer, please contact Leslie. Days and times will be worked out based on the room and volunteers’ availability. EDITOR NEEDED! [HOME] As you may know by now, our Hub Editor has stepped down after doing such a fabulous job over the years. If you or anyone you know might be interested in taking on this very important position, please let Leslie know. Training will be provided. FOOD BANK WEEK [HOME] We will once again be collecting non-perishable food for our local food bank, FAMSAC. We have always been able to collect a large amount of food supplies during this week. The food banks’ predictions for this coming year are for an even greater need. The week

Page 4: eHub Edition 2016 November and December

of December 12th to 18th is Food Bank Week at the Centre. Boxes will be made available for your much appreciated voluntary contributions. HOLIDAY CLOSING [HOME] Traditionally we have opened during Christmas and New Years from noon to 4:00 pm for anyone wishing to come and play cards. The Seniors Centre will open this year on December 27th, 28th, 29th and 30th. Please note Curling is cancelled on December 27th and 29th. LUNCH AT SIR GUY CARLETON SECONDARY SCHOOL [HOME] Good news! The next lunch will be on November 10th at 11:30 a.m. The cost of the lunch is $11.50, an amazing price for a wonderful three course meal including homemade rolls, coffee and tea. The following lunch will be held on December 1st. Once I get the menus, I will post them on the bulletin boards and on our website at www.nepeanseniorscentre.ca RECYCLING [HOME] As you may have noticed we now have recycling containers throughout the Nepean Sportsplex, including the Seniors Centre. We highly encourage you to use them. The Black Bins are for clean paper (score sheets) and cardboard products. The Blue Bins are for plastic (water bottles), cans and glass products. The Green Bins are for food waste (coffee grounds/filters, tea bags), soiled cardboard (pizza boxes, paper plates), cardboard coffee cups (not Styrofoam) and paper towels/napkins. All Styrofoam products (cups, plates) are garbage so please do NOT put them in any container other than the garbage can. SLOTS TRIP [HOME] Another successful trip was held on Tuesday, October 4th with 54 members supporting our Centre by going to Rideau Carleton Slots. A good time was had by all! Thanks to Audrey Fitzpatrick for collecting the tickets prior to boarding. SNOWSUIT FUND [HOME] If you have been busy knitting mitts, hats, scarves, or similar items to donate to the Snowsuit Fund, please bring them to the office. We must deliver them to the Snowsuit Fund by December 9th. 60-PLUS AND AGING WELL! [HOME] There are still a few spaces in this excellent program. If you are interested, please sign up at the front desk. It will be offered again in the spring. Watch your newsletter for more details.

The final one for 2016 will be on Friday, December 9th. SNOWSHOING / X-COUNTRY SKIING [HOME] Last year there was increased interest in these great winter sports. We use the trails located behind the Sportsplex on Mondays at 10:30 am and Fridays at 1:00 pm. There is no charge, but you must be a member of the Centre. I have snowshoes that you can borrow if you want to give it a try before purchasing your own set. We generally start in January when there is enough snow. If you are interested, please contact Leslie at the office at 613-580-2424 ext 46657.

Registration started on August 10th for both fall and winter programs. You can register here at the centre, online or at any Client Service Centre or Community Centre across the City of Ottawa. BRIDGE TOURNAMENT [HOME] By Gopal Kunchur Our second ACBL sanctioned Bridge Tournament was held at the picturesque surroundings of OLG Slots at Rideau Carleton Raceway. Thanks to Kevin Ryan who encouraged a number of our Centre members to participate in this event. Our Centre champions included: August 23rd - Elaine Frank and Asha Bhatnagar; August 24th - Harry Song and David Lei, Gopal Kunchur and Joan Wiener, Anne Coderre and Milt Pelley, Raj Goel and Bill Wheeler; and August 25th - Gopal Kunchur and David Wei, Lilli Holland and Diane Champagne-Vaughan, Bryan Harper and Maureen Mungall, Elaine Frank and Art Saper. ACTIVITIES’ REPORTS [HOME] CARPET BOWLING [HOME]

By Alida Dopplinger: We have enjoyed a very pleasant summer. It was hot, but with a couple of fans blowing it was comfortable. We meet every Tuesday and Thursday at 1 p.m. on the Concourse. We ask members to come 10 minutes early to help set up. It still only costs one dollar plus twenty-five cents for tea or coffee. New

members are always welcome. CONTRACT BRIDGE [HOME]

By Gopal Kunchur On September 21st, 52 players enjoyed a delicious lunch of wraps, sandwiches, salads, crackers, cheese and pickles. A delicious variety of home-made desserts prepared by Sheila was followed by tea and coffee.

We wish to thank all volunteers for their help, especially Arnold, Elaine, Elizabeth, Frank, Gopal, Joyce, Margrit, Norma Jean, Sheila and Dorothy. Six players were awarded prizes for their consistent top performance during the past year. Congratulations Frank, Judy, John, Margrit, Joyce and Steve. Bridge Tip: One no trump is forcing over a major suit opening (heart or spade) and a bid of two is game forcing. With fewer than 5 points, a pass is appropriate in the first round. During the second round (or sometimes in first also), you may bid with favorable distribution. For example, when partner opens one club, with a singleton club and a 4 to 5 card major or 5 to 6 diamonds, you may bid a heart, spade or diamond, depending on your holding.

CREATIVE CRAFT GROUP [HOME] By Donna Butler : We meet in Hall F on Thursday mornings between 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. Some ladies even stay until 11:30 a.m.

The Craft Group is a fund raiser for the Seniors Centre. We have two permanent places to display and sell our crafts throughout the year - a

concourse hall showcase up the stairs from the Seniors Centre office and one showcase in the Heritage Room. We also have a sale at the NRSC Open House and our Christmas Breakfast. We will take on commission requests. The quilting ladies have just finished a quilt that is being sent to Hawaii. The knitting ladies are busy making items for our Charities Groups that we sponsor and our own sales. Any yarn and material donations will be greatly appreciated and very useful for ongoing projects.

New members are most welcome, so do come and join us. We serve coffee and cookies!

CRIBBAGE [HOME] By Ken Hancock - On September 20th, Mary Anne achieved the ninth Perfect Afternoon of this year by winning all eight games, making it nine Perfect Afternoons in nine months. Congratulations.

On Tuesday September 13th, we all congratulated Teresa on her birthday in the traditional way as shown below.

On Tuesday September 27th, we enjoyed the third of our great 50/50 lunches this year, all paid for from our 50/50 draws. The food consisted of a variety of sandwiches, plus so many different desserts, everyone could have a bunch of their favourites. Forty nine of our members were able to attend and on behalf of them all I would like to thank Elsie and John Larsen for providing not only the lunch, but session by session, doing all of the organizing of the 50/50 draws. Our current Champion Scorer is Gerry, followed by Jake in second place and Eugene in third place.

We are always pleased to welcome anyone wishing to join us. Simply show up in the Heritage room any Tuesday or Thursday afternoon around 12:50 and we will be happy to include you in the fun. We start at 1 p.m. and go on to around 3:30 p.m.

CURLING [HOME] By Lloyd Nieman - The curling season runs from November 1 to March 16. For fun, fellowship and friendly competition - with a bit of exercise thrown in - think about joining the curling club. We take to the ice on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, meeting in

the Spectators’ Lounge between 8:15 and 8:45 a.m. and curling from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. Refreshments and lively conversation are served up after each game! The current membership stands at 90, with between 40 to 60 curlers playing on any given day. We make up different teams every day, so new members can always be accommodated. You don’t have to make an attendance commitment. When you attend, the cost is only $4.00 per day to cover ice rental and refreshment costs. Launching sticks are available for those who prefer not to kneel in the hack when delivering the rock. Many have found this innovation allows them to extend their curling careers and thereby maintain the friendships they developed through the sport. Brushes are also provided by the Sportsplex.

If you would like some exercise and friendly competition curling might be for you. See you there!

DUPLICATE BRIDGE [HOME] By Kevin Ryan - Between August 3rd and September 30th, 2016 there were 42 events with a total of 675 pairs participating.

Congratulations to this past session’s honorees: 1. John & Paul 77.8% 2. Art & Lois 68.4% 2. Marg M & Zbigniew 68.4% 4. David & Raj 68.2% 5. Bryan & Maureen 67.3% 5. Marg M & Zbigniew 67.3% 7. Maureen & Bryan 65.5% Thanks All: No tip again this session – only a thank you. I have had the pleasure of writing the Nepean Duplicate Bridge Newsletter for the past four years. The time has passed quickly and I have enjoyed noting in each edition how many of you have

Page 11: eHub Edition 2016 November and December

eHub Edition 5 2016 November and December Page 11 of 21

progressed over the years. During the time that I have been editing the newsletter – just under 4 years – we have played and scored 878 separate sessions and 13,929 pairs have participated! Thanks to all of you for supporting your Duplicate Bridge Club. It is probably the best value entertainment buy in the city. I am also happy to report that Gopal Kunchar will become the new editor to the Newsletter starting with the next addition. I am also pleased to report that two other players (Trish Barlow & Bryan Harper) have volunteered to direct and/or score at the club in future events. Again thanks to all – and although I will be busy for the coming weeks with travel etc. I look forward to seeing you all again at the Nepean Seniors Duplicate Club shortly. COMPUTER CLUB [HOME]

By Joan Lang: We will be continuing with Windows 10. The members have requested Windows 10 as it is a very complex topic. We will be covering e-mail, calendars, backups and security, as well as photos. We meet in Hall F on the first and third Tuesdays of the month at 9:30 a.m.

EUCHRE NEWS [HOME] By Betsy Shorthouse - Sad to say that summer has come and gone so quickly. How did that happen? On September 13th our start of the new season/end of the old season lunch was enjoyed by all in attendance. Top player for last season was Steve McIntyre. Congratulations and be sure you take really good care of that trophy

Steve!

Our new Monday Euchre afternoon is wonderful. So far we are averaging about 6 tables with hopefully more to come. The Monday game starts sharp at 1:00 p.m. in Hall F and we usually finish about the same time as the Tuesday group. Tuesdays are just as busy as ever. This past Tuesday we had 20 tables. Can you hear the noise reverberating throughout Hall F? Tuesday Euchre starts at 12:45 p.m. sharp. Both days cost $2.00 per person and you are guaranteed to have a great time.

5-PIN BOWLING [HOME] By Marsha and Roger Hack - The 2016/17 bowling season is off to another great start. We had close to 60 bowlers at our first bowling session in September. Those numbers should increase as summer/autumn outdoor activities (golf, lawn bowling, etc.) gradually wind down and travellers return from destinations far and wide.

Our final bowling session for 2016 will be held on Monday, December 19, at 1:00 p.m., followed by a party in the Bowling Centre restaurant. Bowling will resume on Monday, January 9, 2017. Bowlers are asked to arrive by 12:30 for a 1:00 p.m. start. Newcomers are always welcome to join us.

500 CLUB [HOME] By Lorrie Wilson - Our members are returning from summer activities

and ready for another season of great card–playing. We are in the process of welcoming back the fall season with a Swiss Chalet luncheon for all our 500 Club members next week, followed by an afternoon of

cards and socializing.

Our top scores for the last two months were:

Lois Langford with 5890 Carole Collins with 5380 Pat McInnis with 5150

These scores were pretty high. Congratulations, ladies! We meet each Thursday at 12:45 in the Heritage Room and anyone who would like to join us is welcome. We finish between 3:30 and 4:00 p.m.

THE FUN BRIDGE GROUP [HOME] By Wilma Matchett - It might have been because so many of our members stayed in the quiet coolness of their own homes during the days of humid weather, that they felt the need to socialize on Friday afternoons as attendance throughout the summer has been great. Judging by the smiles as players departed, we did have fun those Friday

afternoons. Louise McElroy and Butch Carmichael enjoyed bidding and making a challenging 7NT bid on August 19th. We do like to challenge ourselves by bidding either a Grand or Small Slam, but too many times we are annoyed with ourselves when we “chicken out” and the overtricks tell us what we should have bid.

The Fun Bridge Group meets every Friday afternoon from 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Heritage Room, although many of our participants arrive as early as 12:30 p.m. and start playing Bridge as soon as their table has 4 players. Players change partners and/or tables every half hour after our official start time.

We have many experienced Bridge players who are more than willing to coach Bridge class graduates and those coming back to the game after an absence of many years. At Fun Bridge we don't officially keep score, but we always encourage everyone to be a bit daring in their bidding process - and some of us will answer the call for help whenever a partnership has a particularly challenging hand to bid!

Evie and I wish to thank all our volunteers who help prepare for our afternoon’s games, organize our snack table and then clean up at the end. Without all your help we wouldn't have as much FUN!

OUTDOOR WALKING CLUB [HOME] By Leslie Dondale: The group walks on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9:30 a.m. on the trails behind the Sportsplex. Although there is no charge to walk with the group, you must be a member of the Seniors Centre. The group will continue until the trails are no longer

suitable. SHUFFLEBOARD [HOME]

By Gary Fraser - We play shuffleboard from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays, on the concourse with typically four or five courts in use.

We were pleased to welcome Marlyan, Pat and Lloyd as new players,

but have room for more as there are six courts. So if you would like some exercise and

fun, come and join us.

THE NEPEAN SONGSTERS [HOME] By Betty Usher - The Songsters are well into our fall season. At our weekly practice, it's a noisy group with talking and singing, but not both at the same time!

We meet every Thursday morning in the Heritage room from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. We are pleased to welcome 11 new members.

Our fall concert is Sunday, November 13th at the Centrepointe Studio Theatre. Showtime is 2:00 p.m. for Bach to Rock. Tickets are available from any choir member - $15 each.

This fall we are continuing our community service singouts at seniors’ residences, nursing homes and special events. If you are interested in singing, come out to our practice and try it out. You'll get a warm welcome!

COMMUNICATIONS COORDINATION [HOME]

By Thelma Cartwright-Hopwood: I was elected to the Board at the last Annual General Meeting and Open House. I had no idea what was expected of a Board member. I only came

to the NSRC to play Fun Bridge. That, I was enjoying. But becoming a Board member?

I stood for the Board because of an appeal in the Hub for new Board members. We're not doing well on that front. Getting people to serve on the Board is difficult. What I've got out of serving on the Board this year is getting to know about life behind the scenes.

Do you think much about who does all the little things that make your group run smoothly? Who makes announcements about what's coming up? Who keeps a list of members, who might need a get-well card or a lift to the Centre? Who arranges special lunches or makes certain refreshments are served every week? These people are your Activity Leaders.

Other volunteers in your group prepare the room, collect money, help with the snacks or clean up after your event. Your group also has a volunteer who writes about your event activities for the Hub. They do a lot of work for you - most of it invisible, but it's what makes it fun for you to come to your group activity every week. I've come to have a great deal of respect and admiration for Activity Leaders and volunteers since I became a Board member.

What I also found out is how much members like to get together, break free of their own little circle and join in the wider range of activities NSRC offers - the February Blahs Bash, the Summer Fun Picnic and so on. I never went to most of these events before I joined the Board. Once I was a Board member, I felt I had to go. And guess what? I enjoyed it.

So, if you are a member like I used to be - coming in to your group week after week, but not doing much else - think about spreading your wings a little. You could offer to volunteer. Get in touch with the Board member responsible for volunteers, Barbara St.

Laurent. You could offer to do the tea for your group next month. You could even offer to be a Board member. I'm just saying … Think about it!

VOLUNTEER COORDINATION [HOME]

By Barbara St.Laurent - The recorded number of volunteer hours for 2016 is 5,874.35.

There is a desperate need for volunteers for the Management Board. We meet on the second Wednesday of each month (except July & August).

There is also a requirement for a few more volunteers to join the Travel Club Executive.

These meetings are held on the first Wednesday of each month (except July & August).

Before you know it we will be looking for volunteers for the Blahs Bash in February.

SPECIAL ACTIVITIES [HOME]

OUR FOOT CARE CLINIC [HOME]

As we get older many of us have difficulty in reaching our feet to trim our toenails or to otherwise take care of them. This can be a problem, especially for those who live on their own.

In partnership with the Western Ottawa Community Resource Centre, the Centre hosts a Foot Care Clinic on the first and last Wednesday of each month at the Sportsplex. The cost is $23.75.

For more information or to book an appointment, please call the Dee at the Western Ottawa Community Resource Centre, 613-591-3686, extension 3.

SHINGLES VACCINE [HOME]

As you may know, Ontario is expanding the province’s publicly funded immunization

program to help more seniors stay healthy. Beginning September 15, 2016, Ontario will

offer the shingles vaccine free of charge to seniors 65 to 70 years of age. For additional

information, please visit: www.ontario.ca/page/get-free-shingles-vaccine.
