The Water Pipeline and Bubbles in
Action for Remote Sensing for
Water Modelling and Management –
Addressing Practitioner Needs –
A Brief Introduction and Snapshot

QWMN Remote Sensing for Water Modelling and
Management Zoom Workshop - 28 May 2020
Why is remote sensing for water modelling
and management important for practitioners
using remote sensing information?
• Water modelling and management in its widest definition
• Even though remote sensing is not a new field and has been
around for decades, we are all at various stages of awareness,
knowledge and experience with our remote sensing journey for
many areas of business remote sensing could be useful for
• Large community of practitioners with a range of needs in using
remote sensing information
• Enormous benefits of better data for practitioners and the wider
community
• Picture where and how you and your activities/projects/entities
fit into the water pipeline – micro and macro?

Brief Graphic Example to
depict some of the above
concepts
• Time variant 3-D
characteristics, variables,
processes, etc
• Atmosphere – land –
underground
• Headwaters – coast – ocean
• Climate, topography,
bathymetry, land use, soils,
geology, infrastructure
development, ecology, water
quantity and quality, human,
ecological and environmental
water use, etc
• Extreme events, e.g. floods,
droughts, cyclones,
earthquakes, bushfires,
tsunamis, etc.
Conceptual model of processes
Spatial and Temporal dimensions highlighted
• 3D spatial data
• Continuous time series
• Our future data in space and time will become our
historical data basis for future of human endeavours
